Chapter 6 The Line Crossed

1372 Words
Liraya’s voice settled into the space like it had always belonged there. Amara didn’t move. Lucian did. Just slightly. Enough to place himself—not fully in front of her, but close enough to matter. “Liraya,” he said, low and controlled. “This doesn’t concern you.” Liraya’s gaze shifted to him, calm and unreadable. “Everything concerns me,” she replied. Sarian lingered somewhere behind, silent for once, watching the pieces fall into place. Amara straightened slowly. Her pulse had not quickened. But something else had. Recognition. Not of who Liraya was— But of how she looked at her. Not like a stranger. Not like a threat. Like someone remembering. 🌿 “Walk with me,” Liraya said softly, her eyes returning to Amara. It wasn’t a command. But it wasn’t something easily refused. “No,” Lucian said immediately. Amara glanced at him. Then back at Liraya. “I’ll be fine.” Lucian’s jaw tightened. “That’s not the point.” Amara held his gaze. “It is to me.” 🌿 For a moment, neither of them moved. Then— Lucian stepped back. Just enough. Not agreement. Not approval. But permission he didn’t want to give. Liraya turned without another word. Amara followed. 🌿 They didn’t go far. Just beyond the edge of the houses, where the village noise softened and the night stretched a little wider. For a while, neither of them spoke. Then— “You look like her.” Amara’s breath stilled. “Like who?” Liraya glanced at her. “Don’t pretend,” she said gently. “You were not raised to be foolish.” Amara stopped walking. So did Liraya. “You knew her,” Amara said. It wasn’t a question. Liraya’s expression softened—just slightly. “Yes.” 🌿 The air shifted. “My mother,” Amara said quietly. Liraya nodded once. “And your father.” Amara swallowed. Not out of fear. But something close to it. “What are you doing here?” Liraya asked. Not accusing. Not harsh. But serious. Amara hesitated. “I wanted to see the human world.” Liraya studied her. “That’s not the whole truth.” “No.” “Then tell me the rest.” Amara shook her head. “I don’t owe you that.” 🌿 Liraya smiled faintly. “No,” she agreed. “You don’t.” A pause. “But you owe yourself honesty.” Silence stretched. Then— “They keep me hidden,” Amara said quietly. “Protected. Watched.” “As they should.” “I know.” Her voice softened. “But I wanted to know what was outside that.” 🌿 Liraya’s gaze didn’t waver. “They didn’t tell you everything.” Amara looked at her. “What do you mean?” Liraya stepped closer. Just enough. “You are not meant to walk between worlds freely,” she said. “Not like this.” Amara’s chest tightened. “I’ve been fine.” “For now.” A beat. 🌿 “Does he know?” Liraya asked suddenly. Amara stilled. “No.” Liraya’s gaze flickered slightly toward the village. Toward Lucian. “Good,” she said softly. Amara frowned. “Why?” Liraya met her eyes again. “Because if he finds out what you are…” she said slowly, carefully, “he won’t stay away from you.” Amara’s breath caught. “And that,” Liraya added, “will be the beginning of something neither you are ready for.” Before Amara could respond— Liraya stepped back. 🌿 “Go,” she said. Amara didn’t move. “You’re not going to tell him.” It wasn’t a question. Liraya’s lips curved faintly. “No.” “Why?” A pause. Then— “Because I want to see what you choose,” she said. And with that— She turned and disappeared into the night as quietly as she had arrived. Amara stood there for a moment longer. Then turned back. 🌿 Lucian was exactly where she left him. He looked at her immediately. “What did she say?” Amara hesitated. Then— “Nothing important.” Lucian’s expression hardened. “That’s not true.” “Why does it matter?” “Because she doesn’t speak without reason.” Amara crossed her arms slightly. “Maybe she just wanted to talk.” Lucian stepped closer. “She doesn’t ‘just talk’.” Silence. 🌿 “Then maybe,” Amara said quietly, “you don’t know her as well as you think.” That landed. Lucian exhaled slowly. Then— “You’re hiding something.” Amara held his gaze. “So are you.” “That’s different.” “Is it?” Lucian’s jaw tightened. “I don’t trust you,” he said. Amara’s chest tightened slightly. But she didn’t look away. “Then stop coming back,” she said. 🌿 Silence. Lucian stepped closer. Too close. “I don’t want to,” he said quietly. That— That changed something. Amara’s breath softened. “You don’t make sense.” “Neither do you.” A pause. Then— Lucian’s hand lifted. Slow. Careful. He brushed a strand of hair away from her face. 🌿 Amara didn’t move. Didn’t step back. “You could have been hurt,” he said. “I wasn’t.” “That’s not the point.” “Then what is?” Lucian’s hand lingered for just a second longer. Then dropped. “You matter more than you should,” he said. Amara’s heart stuttered. “That sound like a problem,” she said softly. “It is.” And yet— He didn’t step away. For a moment— It felt like the world had narrowed to just the space between them. 🌿 Then— Footsteps. Fast. Sharp. “Lucian!” They both turned. Lira. Her expression shifted the moment she saw them standing so close. Something flickered in her eyes. Something sharp. “I need to speak with you,” she said. Lucian didn’t move. “Then speak.” 🌿 “Alone.” “No.” That surprised her. “Lucian—” “You sent them.” The words cut clean through the night. Lira stilled. Just for a second. Then— “I don’t know what you mean.” Lucian stepped forward. Now it was his turn to close the distance. “Don’t lie to me,” he said quietly. 🌿 Lira’s expression cracked. Just slightly. “They were just supposed to scare her,” she snapped. “That’s all.” Amara blinked. “You had no right,” Lucian said. “I had every right!” Lira shot back. “She walk in here like she belongs—like she can just—” She stopped. Her gaze flicked to Amara. Then back. “You’ve changed,” she said to Lucian. “No,” he replied. “I haven’t.” Lira let out a sharp laugh. “You have,” she said. “Because of her.” 🌿 Silence. Lucian didn’t deny it. That was enough. Something in Lira’s expression hardened. Final. “Be careful,” she said to Amara quietly. “You don’t know what you’re getting into.” Then she turned and walked away. Amara watched her go. Then looked back at Lucian. “You didn’t have to do that,” she said. “Yes,” he replied simply. “I did.” “Why?” Lucian met her eyes. “Because I won’t let anyone hurt you.” he said. 🌿 Amara’s breath caught. Not because of the words. But because— He meant them. And that was more dangerous than anything else. The night stretched around them again. Quieter now. Heavier. “We should stop,” Amaras said softly. Lucian didn’t move. “Stop what?” he asked. She hesitated. Then— “This.” Lucian stepped closer. Again. 🌿 “You don’t mean that.” Amara looked up at him. “No,” she admitted. And that— That was the moment the line disappeared. Somewhere, unseen— Sarian watched from the shadows. And smiled. Because this— This was exactly where everything began to break.
