Chapter 19 What Stays Unsaid

For a moment, neither of them moved. The trees stood still, their pale trunks catching the faint glow of light filtering through the canopy. The stream nearby continued it quiet curve, as if nothing had changed. Then— A rustle. Both turned sharply. Something small darted through the underbrush— A flash of fur. Quick. Harmless. A rabbit. Amara exhaled, the tension slipping from her shoulders. “…we were ready for something worse,” she murmured. Lucian didn’t relax as quickly. But after a second, he stepped back slightly. “It’s nothing,” he said. But his eyes lingered on the trees a moment longer. Then— He looked back at her. “You should head back,” he added. Amara hesitated. “…Will you?” A pause. “Not yet.” She nodded slowly. “Then I’ll find my way.” But as she turned— She glanced back once. He was still there. Watching. And for a reason she didn’t understand— That stayed with her longer than it should have. 🌿 Days passed. The court returned to its rhythm. Measured. Watchful. But something had shifted. Amara found herself seeking quiet corners more often— And somehow— The guard was always there. “You’re doing that on purpose,” she said one afternoon, folding her arms. “Doing what?” “Being exactly where I need to be.” A faint hint of something passed through his expression. “Or maybe you’re just predictable.” She huffed softly. “Then stop following me.” “Stop going where I am.” That earned a real smile. And for a moment— It felt easy. 🌿 Not everyone found it amusing. “Careful,” a voice muttered one evening. Amara turned— Just in time to see two high ranking guards step too close to the guard. “You’re getting comfortable for someone who forgets his place,” one of them said. The other smirked. “Or maybe he thinks standing near her makes him important.” Amara didn’t think. She stepped forward. “He’s with me,” she said calmly. Both men looked at her. “And what does that make him?” one asked. Amara tilted her head slightly. “The king designated him to me, you should know that.” Silence. Not loud. Not dramatic. But enough. The guards exchanged a look— Then stepped back. “We apologize, Princess Ara,” one said stiffly. And just like that— They were gone. Amara exhaled slowly.“You didn’t have to do that,” the guard said. She glanced at him. “I wanted to.” 🌿 Later— Lucian stood beneath the shadow of the great tree. “Why here?” he asked quietly. Liraya didn’t look at him immediately. “Their princess is not like the others,” she said. “That doesn’t answer my question.” “This kingdom is one the most powerful there is.” Lucian’s gaze sharpened slightly. “And that makes it safe?” “You are one of the most powerful living king.” “And I am meant to babysit their princess?” “She’s quite capable. But what she’s dealing with isn’t something she can face alone, I know she needs help.” Lucian didn’t respond immediately. But something in that answer— Stayed. 🌿 Later still— In one of the quieter halls— Lucian crossed paths with someone familiar. “Auren.” The other man turned, brows lifting. “Well. You’re not from around here,” Auren said lightly. “Neither are you.” Auren smirked. “I’m visiting.” “For what purpose?” Auren shrugged. “I am with our princess.” Something tightened— Just slightly. “Princess Ara,” Auren added. Lucian stilled. Of course. Before he could ask more— Auren continued, casually— “She’s settling in well.” A beat. “May I ask how is—” Lucian couldn’t stop himself. Auren didn’t notice the shift. “Amara’s with me. She’s safer and better.” Lucian’s jaw tightened. She did choose him. He didn’t ask more. 🌿 That night— The clearing again. Amara sat near the edge of the stream, fingers tracing the surface of the water. “You seem uptight,” she said as he arrived. “You keep coming back.” She smiled faintly. “Maybe I like this place.” Lucian stepped closer. Not too close. “Have you spoken to the king yet?” he asked, more of a reminder. Amara shook her head. “No.” “Why not?” She let out a quiet breath. “I don’t know what I’d say.” “That you need help.” “I don’t like asking for it.” “You should.” She looked up at him then. “You make it sound simple.” “It is.” She shook her head. “No,” she said softly. “It never is.” A pause settled between them. Then— He spoke again. “If you want… I could help.” Amara blinked. “How?” “You know, I could get you close enough to speak to him.” he said. She studied him. Carefully. “Why would you do that for me?” Lucian didn’t answer immediately. Because the truth was. He didn’t have one he could say. “…Because you shouldn’t have to do this alone,” he said finally. Amara looked at him for a long moment. Then— Softly— “I’m not ready yet.”
