The door slammed again.
Elena's heart lurched as she turned toward the narrow entrance of the hidden room. Alexander was already moving, positioning himself between her and the doorway.
“Stay behind me.”
She ignored the command and stepped closer to him. “Whoever is coming knows we're here.”
“I know.”
Footsteps approached slowly from the other side of the passage.
Not hurried.
Not cautious.
Almost deliberate.
Alexander's expression hardened. One hand disappeared beneath his jacket, and Elena realized he was reaching for the weapon he carried for protection.
The footsteps stopped.
For a moment, there was complete silence.
Then the figure appeared in the doorway.
Elena recognized him immediately.
The man from the archive.
The same dark eyes. The same controlled expression. The same presence that had sent fear through her the first time she encountered him.
“Damon,” Alexander said coldly.
The man's gaze moved from Alexander to Elena.
“You shouldn't have opened this room.”
Elena's pulse quickened. “You knew this place existed.”
Damon didn't answer.
“You were here before,” she continued. “You were the one watching the archives.”
“I was making sure nobody found what wasn't meant to be found.”
Alexander stepped forward. “You worked for my father.”
Damon's expression barely changed.
“I did.”
“For how long?”
“Long enough to know that some questions are safer left unanswered.”
Elena stepped around Alexander.
“My father knew you.”
Damon looked at her.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I was assigned to him.”
“By Marcus?”
“Yes.”
The answer sent another chill through her.
“Why?”
Damon hesitated.
“Your father was investigating financial transfers that had begun moving through accounts connected to both Carter Holdings and Blackwood Corporation. Marcus believed someone was manipulating the records.”
Alexander's jaw tightened.
“So my father knew.”
“He suspected.”
“And Daniel?”
“He knew more than Marcus did.”
Elena's voice became sharper. “Then why didn't anyone help him?”
Damon looked at her for several seconds.
“Because by the time people understood how serious it was, Daniel was already in danger.”
Elena felt anger rising inside her.
“You were watching him. You knew he was in danger. What did you do?”
“I moved what I could.”
“What does that mean?”
“Copies of financial records. Transaction reports. Names. Anything I thought could survive if the original files disappeared.”
“But not the ledger.”
Damon's expression changed slightly.
“No.”
“You knew about it.”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
“I don't know.”
Elena stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I expect you to understand that if I knew where it was, I wouldn't still be alive.”
Alexander watched Damon carefully.
“Who were you protecting it from?”
Damon's gaze shifted toward him.
“Not who.”
“Then what?”
“The person who controlled the transfers.”
Alexander went still.
Elena remembered Daniel's note.
Marcus, if anything happens to me, do not trust the person who controls the transfers.
Her stomach tightened.
“Who controlled them?”
Damon shook his head.
“I never learned the full identity.”
“But you knew someone inside the family was involved.”
“Yes.”
“Richard?”
Damon's silence lasted just long enough to be noticed.
Then he said, “You're asking the wrong question.”
Elena frowned.
“What question should I be asking?”
“Why was Daniel willing to hide the ledger from Marcus?”
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
Damon looked directly at him.
“You know the answer.”
The room became painfully quiet.
Elena slowly turned toward Alexander.
“What does he mean?”
Alexander didn't answer immediately.
Damon continued.
“Your father sent you to Carter's house for the ledger.”
Elena's face changed.
Alexander finally looked at her.
“Yes.”
“You knew about this?”
“No.”
“You were there?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three days before your father died.”
Elena stared at him.
The words struck harder than she expected.
“You went to my house.”
Alexander nodded.
“Why?”
“My father ordered me to retrieve the ledger.”
“Because Marcus knew Daniel had it?”
“Yes.”
“But you said earlier that Daniel told you it had already been moved.”
“He did.”
“And you believed him?”
“I believed something was wrong.”
Damon stepped farther into the room.
“Alexander was nineteen. Marcus told him to bring the ledger back. He didn't tell him everything.”
Elena looked at Alexander.
“Did you take it?”
“No.”
“Did you threaten my father?”
“No.”
“Did you hurt him?”
“No.”
She searched his face.
Alexander didn't look away.
“I went there because my father ordered me to retrieve it. Daniel refused. He told me the ledger had already been moved.”
“Where?”
“I didn't know.”
“And then?”
“I went back to Marcus.”
“What did you tell him?”
Alexander's voice dropped.
“I told him the ledger had been moved.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“You lied to your father.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel warned me that someone had betrayed Marcus. He told me I didn't understand what I was carrying into that house.”
Elena swallowed.
“And three days later, my father was dead.”
Alexander said nothing.
She turned away from him, trying to control the storm of emotions moving through her.
For seven years, she had imagined the final days of her father's life.
She had imagined strangers.
Enemies.
Blackwood men coming for the ledger.
She had never imagined that the young man who stood before her now had been the last Blackwood to speak to her father before everything ended.
Damon watched her quietly.
“There is something else you need to know.”
Elena looked up.
“What?”
“Daniel moved the ledger before Alexander came.”
Her breath caught.
“So Marcus didn't give him the ledger three days before he died?”
“No.”
“Then when?”
“Before that.”
Elena looked at Alexander.
He nodded.
“My father had already entrusted the ledger to Daniel. I was sent to retrieve it later.”
That finally made sense.
But it created another question.
“Why would Marcus give my father the ledger and then send you to take it back?”
Damon answered before Alexander could.
“Because Marcus discovered that someone else knew the ledger existed.”
Elena's pulse quickened.
“Who?”
Damon's expression darkened.
“I don't know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it's the truth.”
He reached into his coat and pulled out a small folded photograph.
He handed it to Elena.
She opened it.
Her breath stopped.
It was an old photograph of Daniel standing beside Marcus.
But there was someone else in the background.
Damon.
And another man whose face had been partially cut out of the photograph.
Elena looked up.
“Who is that?”
Damon took the photograph back.
“Someone Daniel trusted.”
“Where is he now?”
“I don't know.”
Alexander's eyes remained fixed on Damon.
“Then why show her the photograph?”
“Because she needs to understand something.”
Damon looked directly at Elena.
“The ledger isn't the most dangerous thing your father left behind.”
Elena's brow furrowed.
“What is?”
Damon's expression became unreadable.
“The person he trusted with it.”
Before Elena could ask another question, Damon stepped backward.
“Wait.”
He stopped.
“You know where that person is.”
“No.”
“You're lying.”
Damon's eyes met hers.
“Maybe.”
Then he disappeared into the passage.
Alexander moved after him.
“Damon!”
But the footsteps were already fading.
Elena remained frozen, staring at the doorway.
Alexander turned back to her.
She looked at him.
“You knew.”
“I knew part of it.”
“You knew my father had the ledger.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Marcus sent you to take it.”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me.”
“I didn't know if I could trust you.”
A bitter smile touched Elena's lips.
“You're beginning to sound like everyone else.”
Alexander stepped closer.
“I didn't tell you because I didn't know why you had returned. I knew you were hiding something.”
“And now?”
“Now I know you're Elena Carter.”
Her heart skipped.
He had finally said it.
No false name.
No pretending.
Just her father's surname between them.
Elena held his gaze.
“And what are you going to do with that information?”
Alexander's expression softened slightly.
“Nothing.”
“Why?”
“Because I think I've finally realized that you aren't here to destroy my family.”
Elena's voice was quiet.
“You don't know what I'm here to do.”
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“But I know you're looking for the truth.”
She looked away.
“And if the truth destroys your family?”
His eyes remained on her.
“Then maybe my family deserves to fall.”
Elena looked back at him.
For the first time, she couldn't tell whether Alexander Blackwood was the man standing between her and the truth...
Or the only person willing to uncover it with her.
Neither of them noticed the small red light blinking beneath the old archive desk.
Someone had been listening.
And someone had just heard Alexander say Elena's real name.
