70 London always feels more homey than home. Every time I step under the high arched glass ceilings of Paddington Station, I think it’s the nicest shopping mall I’ve ever seen. Despite tens of thousands of people bustling around us, everyone trying to get everywhere, the crowd feels a whole lot more civil than Detroit or New York or anywhere in the States. I’m sure everyone’s just as impatient, but there’s not so many elbows and I smell a lot more fresh-baked bread and grilled sausage than I would at home. The sandwich vendors and travel accessory shops in the cubical stalls are all chains, but they’re unfamiliar chains and brands so they feel like mom-and-pop places carrying local product.
