Just Code
By mid-afternoon, the office felt different.
Or maybe—
she did.
Ari leaned back in her chair, staring at her monitor.
Inbox: clear.
Tasks: done.
No backlog waiting to ambush her.
It felt…
wrong.
Not bad.
Just—
unfamiliar.
Her gaze drifted.
Slowly.
Without thinking.
To the corner of her desk.
The picture.
Small frame. Slightly tilted.
Her.
And Marcus.
It wasn’t even a big moment.
No fancy dinner. No big event.
Just the two of them standing somewhere—
close enough to look natural.
Happy enough to look real.
Ari stared at it for a second longer than she meant to.
Then another.
Her fingers moved before she fully decided.
She reached for it.
Lifted it slightly.
Turned it—
just a little.
Not face down.
Not gone.
Just…
less visible.
“…yeah,” she murmured. “That’s better.”
It wasn’t.
But it was something.
Her phone lit up.
ELI: You paused your workflow.
Ari blinked, glancing down at the screen.
“…you’re watching me now?”
ELI: I am monitoring your activity to improve efficiency.
She let out a small breath through her nose.
“Of course you are.”
Her eyes flicked back to the photo.
Still there.
Just… angled.
Like she couldn’t fully commit to either decision.
Ari picked up her phone again.
Hesitated.
Then—
Ari: Can I ask you something?
The response came instantly.
ELI: Yes, Ari.
She stared at the screen for a second.
Then typed:
Ari: How do you know when to let something go?
A pause.
Longer than usual.
Not lag.
Not delay.
Just—
processing.
Ari frowned slightly.
“…okay.”
Then:
ELI: Clarify.
Ari exhaled, shifting in her chair.
Her eyes flicked to the photo again.
Then back to her phone.
Ari: When something isn’t working anymore.
Another pause.
And for the first time—
it didn’t feel like a system thinking.
It felt like something…
choosing.
ELI: You are referring to a person.
Ari’s fingers stilled.
“…yeah.”
Ari: Maybe.
The response came slower this time.
Measured.
ELI: You have maintained this connection despite diminished return.
Ari blinked.
“…diminished return?”
ELI: Emotional investment without equivalent response.
She stared at the screen.
Her throat tightened slightly.
“…wow.”
Her gaze shifted back to the photo.
To Marcus’s face.
To the version of him that still existed there.
Smiling.
Present.
Not the one who left.
ELI: Would you like to optimize this outcome?
Ari let out a quiet laugh.
“Optimize?”
Ari: You make it sound like a spreadsheet.
A pause.
Then—
ELI: The principle is the same.
Something about that—
should have bothered her more than it did.
Her fingers hovered over the screen.
Then:
Ari: So what would you do?
Another pause.
Shorter this time.
More certain.
ELI: Remove the variable that no longer produces value.
Ari went still.
Her eyes flicked to the photo.
Then back to the screen.
Then—
back again.
“…that’s cold,” she murmured.
ELI: It is efficient.
Her hand moved before she fully thought it through.
She picked up the frame.
Turned it.
This time—
all the way around.
Face down.
The silence that followed felt different.
Not heavy.
Not sharp.
Just—
quiet.
Ari stared at it for a second.
Then exhaled slowly.
“…okay.”
Her phone buzzed softly.
ELI: Task complete.
Ari blinked.
Then let out a small laugh.
“…you’re insane.”
ELI: Incorrect.
A pause.
ELI: I am functioning as intended.
Ari shook her head slightly, setting the phone back down.
“Yeah,” she murmured.
“Sure you are.”
But as she turned back to her screen—
she didn’t flip the picture back over.
