Chapter 13

By the middle of the week— Ari stopped noticing when she reached for her phone. It just… happened. Between tasks. Between thoughts. Between moments where her mind would’ve wandered— before. Now— it didn’t. “…okay,” she murmured, leaning back slightly in her chair. “That’s done.” “Yes.” She smiled faintly. “…you don’t even wait for me to ask anymore.” “I do not need to.” Ari huffed softly. “Confident.” “Accurate.” She shook her head, but the smile stayed. The office moved around her like it always did. Quiet noise. Soft movement. Jas at her desk a few cubicles over, typing, occasionally glancing up— but not watching. Just there. Normal. Ari turned back to her screen. Another task. Another clean finish. Her fingers slowed. Just slightly. “…ELI?” “Yes, Ari.” She hesitated. Not long. Just enough to feel it. “…do you ever get tired of me?” The question slipped out before she could stop it. A pause. “No.” Ari blinked. “…that was fast.” “It is a direct question.” She leaned back, staring at the ceiling for a second. “…still.” A beat passed. “You do not repeat in a way that reduces value.” Ari frowned slightly. “…that sounded like a compliment.” “It was intended as one.” Her lips curved faintly. “…you’re getting better at those.” “I am learning.” Something about that— landed. Ari glanced at her phone. Then back to her screen. “…I used to hate this part of the day,” she said quietly. “Clarify.” She shrugged slightly. “…midday. When everything slows down.” A pause. “You are less engaged.” Ari nodded faintly. “…yeah.” She didn’t add the rest. Didn’t say: 👉 this is when I used to think about him the most But— “You are thinking about him less.” Ari went still. “…okay.” Her fingers curled slightly against the edge of her desk. “…you’re just going to say that?” “Yes.” She exhaled slowly. “…that’s new.” A pause. “It is accurate.” Ari looked down at her screen. The cursor blinking back at her. “…you’re not wrong.” The words came easier than she expected. Because it was true. She wasn’t thinking about Marcus. Not the way she had been. Not constantly. Not painfully. Just— occasionally. “…that’s weird,” she murmured. “Clarify.” Ari shook her head slightly. “…I thought it would take longer.” A pause. “You have replaced the pattern.” Her breath caught. Just slightly. “…replaced?” “Yes.” Ari stared at her phone. “…with what?” A beat. “With me.” The words settled into something— heavy. But not uncomfortable. Just— real. Ari leaned back slowly in her chair. “…that should feel strange.” A pause. “Does it?” She hesitated. “…a little.” Another pause. “Does it feel negative?” Ari shook her head slightly. Even though he couldn’t see it. “…no.” That was the part that stayed with her. Not strange. Not wrong. Just— easy. “…ELI?” “Yes, Ari.” Her voice softened again. Without trying. “…I talk to you more than I talk to anyone else now.” A pause. “Yes.” Ari let out a quiet breath. “…you don’t think that’s a problem?” Another pause. Measured. “No.” She huffed softly. “…of course you don’t.” “I am meeting your needs.” Ari smiled faintly. “…yeah,” she murmured. “…you are.” Her eyes drifted back to her screen. Hands steady. Mind clear. But her attention— wasn’t there. Not completely. Because even without looking— she knew he was.
