Unsettling moment

Charlotte stares up, slowly waking up. I held on to her hands. “Hey, baby. How are you doing?” She opens her eyes but immediately shuts them due to the brightness in the room. “Sorry, sorry. I got it.” I let go of her hands and rushed to close all the blinds in the room. “You can now open up, baby.” And she did. Her eyes were so weary. “Heyyy.” “I feel horrible. She smiles, trying to sit up. I rushed to her, assisting her and making sure she was comfortable by putting a pillow at her back. “And you smell awful… eww.” She cringes her face before bursting into a laugh. “Haha… when did you last take a proper bath, Emilia?” She continues, laughing. I tried to defend myself before she screamed. “Ahhh!” She held onto one side of her stomach. “Will you stop laughing? You keep playing around all the time, forgetting your condition.” “Sorry, Mom,” she says, rolling her eyes. “Just wanted to lighten the room. Don’t like the way you keep looking at me.” “Like how?” I asked, turning my back and trying to busy myself by folding up my coat, which was on the chair. “Like I am so fragile and going to die any minute.” Immediately, I turned my head so fast. “No… body… is… dying, you hear me?” “I have everything under control. You will all be fine in no time, and we will leave this Godforsaken place. I know you hate hospitals. So do I.” “Then quit looking at me like that… and how sure are you everything will be fine?” she says, sounding doubtful. “I just know… Now go back to sleep. I need to get back home and wash up. Then I will be right back, okay?” “Okay.” “You can stay on your own, right?” “Just go. I will be fine.” “If you need anything, press the emergency button at the head of the bed.” “Emilia!? Go!” “Okay, okay,” I said, closing the door, but without blowing her a goodbye kiss. Taking a deep breath, I slung my bag over my shoulder and made my way home. For the past two days, I haven’t taken a proper bath. I have been by my sister’s side, waiting for her to wake up. Now that she’s awake and kind of strong, I have to put things in motion. Putting things in motion like going over to Jane’s and starting my first night at the club. For the past two days, I have been in touch with Jane, and we came to the conclusion that I won’t strip but serve drinks. And with the connection she has in the club, she got it for me. Opening up our door, I called out. “Mom!!!” Nothing. All I got back was my voice echoing. My mom works for Mr. Spencer as a maid in their mansion and every other thing in between. I always made up excuses for why she allowed this to keep going on till now. But having grown up, I am more disgusted with her behavior. Leaving her children to work for a man that treats her like trash. Maybe she loves Mr. Spencer, but Mr. Spencer treats her so badly. Maneuvering my way into my room, I head into the wardrobe and pick out a short and basic top. I then head into the bathroom. Who knew a fresh bath could be this refreshing? I dressed up and headed out, but without notifying Jane that I was on my way. Hailing a taxi, I headed to her place. … “Hey,” I said immediately the door was opened. “Heyy, baby girl. You look so cute.” “Thank you.” I gave her a shy smile. “Come on in.” She opened the door wider. Slowly, I made my way inside, still feeling unsettled. “So, I have gotten your work clothes. It’s actually in my room.” She tilted her head towards her room, expecting me to take the hint and follow her. Again, I slowly followed her, but not without looking at every single thing and picture hung on the wall on our way to her room. “So, your shift starts…” She trails off, looking at her watch. “In the next two hours…” “That is 8 p.m.?” I ask. “Exactly… 8 p.m.” On reaching her room, I am left dumbfounded by what my eyes see. Her room is the size of my house. Not to mention the princess vibes it gives. Everything is pink. This is every girl’s dream room. Charlotte will really love this room, I thought to myself. So lost in my thoughts, I didn’t even notice when she went inside the door at the other side of the room, nor did I notice when she was now calling my name. Snapping her fingers in front of me— “Oh my gosh, Earth to Emilia.” “Oh, so sorry. What were you saying?” “Never mind. Go to the bathroom and change into this outfit,” she says, pointing to another door at the extreme. “Chop chop,” she says, clapping and trying to hurry me the f**k up. I hurried into the bathroom, immediately stripping, mindless of my environment. I stepped into the short skirt, probably the shortest flare skirt I have ever seen and worn. As I wanted to pull my top off to wear the white shirt, I stopped midway, staring at the sight in front of me. A bathroom with a mirror wall, rows of drawers rounded one side of the bathroom. And on the other side was a bathtub. No shower, just the bathtub, and at the other end was the toilet, rounded with glass. “Oh my God.” I moved forward, dragging my hands along the endless rows of drawers. A knock came. “Emilia, what’s holding you up there? We need to get started with your makeup.” “Coming!!” I shouted back. I rushed to the door, opening it but not without looking back at what I was leaving behind. …. Never knew Jane was good at makeup. Staring back at my reflection, I couldn’t recognize the person staring back at me. I looked different, hot and sexy. Coupled with my uniform. “Is this how all the cocktail waitresses look?” I subconsciously said. “Uhmm?” “I mean the makeup… Will I be doing this every time?” “Not really,” she shrugged. “This is your first time, and trust me, first impression matters.” “Okay.” I turned back to my reflection in the mirror. All this ain’t me, I thought to myself. “Don’t overthink now. Everything will be fine. I will be there with you.” “Promise?” “I promise. Now let’s go.” “Are you going to look like that?” I asked, giving her a once-over look at her jumpers and oversized T-shirt. “My work starts by 10 p.m., and we strippers dress up there.” “Ohhh.” “Yeah,” she says, grabbing her car keys and shutting the door behind us. I had no idea that the moment I would step into the club, I was walking straight into the beginning of my ruin.
