EPISODE 3: EVERYTHING TOOK A TURN

551 Words
Drew didn’t return home that night. And for the first time since their accidental marriage began, Amelia realized what true silence felt like. Not peaceful but suffocating. She lay on the massive California king bed, staring at the ceiling. The events of the day replayed like a broken movie reel: Drew’s cold eyes. His lawyer’s warning. The scandal that shouldn’t have involved her at all. By morning she had convinced herself that Drew would send divorce papers and end everything. Maybe that was best. But Drew had other plans. A Knock at the Door Amelia wrapped a robe around herself and opened the door expecting housekeeping. Instead, Drew stood there, unshaven, exhausted, suit jacket slung over his shoulder. “Morning,” he said, voice rough. “You didn’t come home,” she replied quietly. He sighed and brushed past her, heading straight for the kitchen. “There was a crisis at the board. I handled it.” “You could have texted,” she whispered. He paused, back still turned. “You’re not my wife. Not really. I didn’t think you’d care.” That one stung more than she expected. An Unexpected Request Drew finally turned around, his expression unreadable. “Pack a bag,” he said. She blinked. “For what?” “We’re going away for a few days. Somewhere quiet. I need to get you out of the city until this scandal dies down. Reporters are sniffing around.” “I can handle a few reporters, Drew.” He stepped closer, eyes dark. “You don’t understand. The board thinks you’re a liability.” His jaw clenched. “I won’t let them tear you apart.” She opened her mouth to argue, but his voice softened unexpectedly. “Please, Amelia. Just… trust me on this one.” Her heartbeat skipped. Private Jet, Private Tension Within hours, she was seated beside him on his private jet. Drew sat across from her, tie loosened, sleeves rolled up, looking like every billionaire fantasy and every emotional disaster. He caught her staring. “What?” he asked. “You’re different today,” she said. He leaned back, eyes on her. “And you’re exactly the same too honest for your own good.” Silence stretched between them, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It was charged. Hot. Dangerous. The Storm Halfway through the flight, turbulence hit. Amelia gripped the armrest. Drew slid beside her instantly. “Hey. I’ve got you.” His warm hand covered hers, steadying it. “Why are you being nice to me?” she whispered. He swallowed hard, still holding her hand. “Because last night I realized something.” “What?” “That for the first time in years, I actually care about someone. And it terrifies me.” Her breath caught. A Confession Interrupted Just as she was about to respond, the pilot announced their descent. Drew let go of her hand abruptly, mask back on, emotions locked away like they never happened. “We’ll talk when we land,” he said quietly. But Amelia knew better. Drew Adams didn’t talk. He hid. He controlled. He ran. Still… she hoped. Because for one fleeting moment in the sky Drew had let her see the man beneath the billionaire armor. And she wasn’t ready to let that go.
