Chapter three: SUDDEN OPPORTUNITIES

1020 Words
We finished dinner so Gina and I were cleaning up catching up on gossip and our inexistent love lives when Mary walked in. "Hey girls, can we have a chat when you're done?" She said softly placing a warm hand on both our shoulders. Gina and I looked at ourselves confused but nodded anyway. "Do you know why?" I prodded when Mary left but Gina just shrugged just as confused. We cleaned up and placed the left overs in the fridge leaving the dishes on the rack to drip dry. We went to the living room where we saw Mary sitting on the recliner with a book in a hand and her glasses perched on the bride of her nose. I smiled at her presence, she looked so youthful. We walked over and sat on the double seater just by her side. She didn't look up for a second as if she was trying to finish up the chapter first. So I whipped out my phone while we were waiting for her. I saw missed calls from my mom and a few text, I must've forgotten to tell her I would be sleeping over at Gina's. I groaned as I quickly replied her texts and assured her that I was fine. "I'm sorry for keeping you waiting girls" Mary said, keeping her glasses in the case and closing the book after placing a book mark. "It's okay mom" Gina said sounding like she would be anywhere but here. She got cranky when it got too late, she valued her 8 hours of sleep. "I won't take much of your time, relax" she said, directing it to Gina. Gina just rolled her eyes but nodded anyway. "I overheard you guys talking about your job Emilia..." My throat went dry as I heard Mary. I wasn't ready to tell the adults yet. I was just planning to fake it out till I found another job and believe me when I say when Mary knows, my mom knows. I just looked at her with wide eyes keeping mute. "You eavesdropped on our conversation?? Mom!!" Gina whined giving her mom a questioning look. "I didn't eavesdrop Gina, I just happened to hear a bit of it when I was passing by" she assured still very much composed about the whole situation. "You can calm down Emilia, I won't tell Grace unless you want me to" she said with a warm smile. I felt the tension in my shoulders ease up a bit since that was my biggest fear. "I called you here because I have a suggestion, I just don't know if you'll be down for it" Mary continued. My ears perked at what she said, sitting up immediately from my slouching position "you do???" I asked with wide eyes. She nodded with a wide smile. A frown formed on my face as I suddenly realized something "you know I have no degree right?" I asked with raised eyebrows. She just chuckled and nodded. The smile reappeared on my face at that. I turned to gush about the good news with the very silent Gina just to see her asleep, sprawled across the couch. I giggled at her figure and took a picture. "She's going to regret that Tomorrow" Mary said laughing. "so what's the Job about?" I asked excited. Mary sat up "about that..." She started as she cleared her throat taking my hands in hers. "it's an odd job but I think you'll be perfect for it, and the pay is amazing too" she said smiling from her eyes. Hearing the conditions made me smile wider. "My friend's boss has a son. You should know him, he's a big name" Mary continued. I frowned a bit not quite understanding "a big name?..." I asked prompting her to explain better. "Yeah, like he's famous. He's the Director and owner of about 8 companies all under the same name. Lawson limited? Ever heard of it?" Mary asked in a hopeful tone, like she was hoping that I would know what she was talking about. I just looked at her like she was stupid, who didn't know Lawson limited. "Oh, I don't know. You mean like Lawson Tech of your Tv, or Lawson Insurance or Lawson foods of my favorite chips. I wonder if I've heard of it" I said placing a finger on my chin as if I wondering. Mary just rolled her eyes at me "so I'm sure you've heard of Ryan?" She prodded further still clueless. I just looked at her with a deadpan expression "Ryan Lawson: billionaire of the year? Ryan Lawson: bachelor of the year? Ryan Lawson: CEO of the year??" I continued chuckling when she cut me off. "I guess he really is that famous after all" she said with a subtle giggle. I just nodded lightly "yup". "Well, apparently he's a hassle and his mom might need someone to keep him in check, so she's going to be your employer....if you're down for the job of course". I looked at Mary like she was crazy, I didn't have the luxury to be picky with jobs now and definitely not with billionaires! "anyone in the world would want to work for Justine Lawson, she's literally a fashion icon" I said realizing that i was gushing so i calmed down. Mary smiled at my reaction so I just looked down embarrassed. "About the job...." Mary started again and I sat back up realizing that I lost focus. "Yeah, right. The job... What exactly is it about anyway. Do I have to be his secretary or something?" I asked acting like the idea didn't excite me in my head. I could already imagine how nice it would be to work with him. People who looked that good were always the cutest in real life. I silently gushed just thinking about it but Mary just had to burst my imagination bubble "No, he already has a secretary" "You're going to be his caretaker, sort of" she said even wincing at her own words". My eyes went wide in shock "like a babysitter????!!"
