Chapter 2 : Mark of Eternity

1020 Words
The light didn't just blind us; it swallowed us whole. It felt like falling, even though my feet were firmly planted on the ground. The world dissolved into pure gold and silver, swirling around us like a living storm. The power was immense, ancient, and demanding, trying to tear us apart to test our resolve. But Kaelen’s grip was ironclad. He didn't just hold my hand; he pulled me closer, wrapping his other arm around my waist and pressing me flush against his chest. My face was buried in the crook of his neck, and I could hear his heart beating—strong, steady, and fast. "Don't resist it," his voice echoed in my mind, clear as day even amidst the chaos. "Let it flow. Let it connect." I closed my eyes and stopped fighting. I let the magic rush through me, burning away the doubts, burning away the fear. I felt it searching for its counterpart, and I knew exactly where to find it. Kaelen. I squeezed my eyes tighter and pushed my own energy back toward him. A shockwave of heat exploded between us. It wasn't hot like fire, but warm like sunlight, deep and penetrating. I felt something shift inside my soul, a click, like a key turning in a lock. And suddenly, I wasn't just feeling my emotions anymore. I felt pride. I felt power. I felt a fierce, overwhelming protectiveness that wasn't mine. I feel you, his voice whispered in my head, soft and amazed. Gods, Elara... you are bright. I opened my eyes. We were still standing in the chamber, but everything had changed. The air shimmered around us. The book on the pedestal was now open wide, and from its pages, two streams of light shot out—one gold, one silver. They swirled together, dancing like serpents, and then shot straight toward us. "Kaelen!" I gasped, trying to pull back instinctively. "No!" He held me tighter, refusing to let me move an inch. "It's okay. It wants to mark us. Trust me." The light hit us. It wrapped around my right wrist like a burning bracelet, and I knew, without looking, that the same thing was happening to him. It stung for a second, sharp and intense, and then it melted into my skin, becoming a part of me. When the light finally faded, leaving spots dancing in my vision, the room was silent again. Peaceful. Kaelen slowly released me, but he didn't step away. We stood there, breathing hard, chests heaving, staring at each other like we had just run a marathon. I looked down at my wrist. There, etched into my skin, was a beautiful mark. It looked like a crown intertwined with chains of stars. It glowed faintly, pulsing in rhythm with my heartbeat. "It's beautiful," I breathed, touching it gently. Kaelen grabbed my wrist gently and brought it up to his face. He looked at the mark, then up at my eyes, and his expression was so raw, so intense, that I forgot how to breathe. "It is permanent," he said quietly. His thumb brushed over the mark, sending electric shocks up my arm. "Now, everywhere you go, everyone will know. You belong to the Seal. You belong... to me." I swallowed hard, my throat suddenly dry. The atmosphere had shifted from magical to something else entirely. Something dangerous and exciting. "You make it sound like I'm property," I managed to say, though my voice came out weaker than I intended. He smirked, that dark, sexy smirk that made my knees turn to jelly. "You are not property, Elara. You are the other half of my soul. It is different." He let go of my wrist but kept his hand roaming up my arm, over my shoulder, until his fingers grazed my jawline. He tilted my head up, forcing me to look at him. "You feel it, don't you?" he murmured, leaning down. "The connection. You can feel my presence even when I am not near, can't you?" I could. It was like having a second heartbeat somewhere else. A warm tether linking us together across any distance. "Yes," I whispered, unable to lie to him when he was this close. "It's... strange. I feel like I know you better than I know myself now." "Good," he whispered, his face inches from mine. His eyes dropped to my lips, and he held my gaze there for a long, agonizing moment. "That means it worked." I waited. My heart was hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. I swear, for a second there, I thought he was going to kiss me. Really kiss me. But then, the bastard had to go and ruin the moment. He pulled back suddenly, clearing his throat and turning away to hide what I swear was a blush on the tips of his ears. "Of course," he said, his voice suddenly back to being gruff and formal. "Now comes the hard part." I blinked, snapping out of the trance. "What hard part?" He turned back to me, crossing his arms over his chest, looking way too pleased with himself. "Training." "Training?" I groaned, letting my head fall back in despair. "Seriously? We just saved the world with magic and you want to make me exercise?" "We didn't save anything yet," he grinned, walking toward the door. "We just signed the contract. Now we have to learn how to use the power before it burns us alive. And trust me, woman... with your lack of discipline, it's going to be a long, painful week." I ran after him, punching his arm. "You are such a jerk! You almost kissed me and now you talk about discipline?! What is wrong with you?!" He laughed, opening the doors and walking out into the hallway like he owned the place. "Maybe I would have finished the kiss if you weren't so loud. Focus, Elara. Class starts at dawn. Don't be late... or I might have to punish you." He winked at me over his shoulder and walked away, leaving me standing there, flustered, annoyed, and weirdly excited.
