CHAPTER FIVE — THE PRESSURE CLOSES IN

1210 Words
The next morning started wrong. Amara knew it the moment she woke up in Alexander’s guest room, her heart heavy, her mind racing with all the things she couldn’t say. Sleep had come in pieces, broken by memories she wished she could erase the fears she desperately tried to swallow. Today, she was meant to follow Alex through a day of meetings real meetings, not polite introductions. This time, people expected results. She wasn’t ready. But she had no choice. The elevator ride to the 30th floor felt like standing inside a closing fist. Amara stared at the numbers glowing above the doors, trying to breathe normally. Her palms were already sweating and shaking. Alex stood beside her, immaculate in a sharp grey suit. Strong. Focused. Untouched by nerves. “Are you alright?” he asked quietly without turning his head. No. She wasn’t. Not even close. “I… I’m trying, ” she whispered. His jaw tightened slightly, but his voice softened. “Trying is enough. For now.” The elevator doors opened, and everything inside her tensed. Board members were already waiting. Assistants moved quickly between offices. The sound of phones ringing and voices arguing filled the air. And above it all, the tension heavy, thick, rising by the minute. Something was wrong here. Terribly wrong. The meeting began badly. They were only fifteen minutes in when one board member slammed a folder on the table. “This is a disaster, ” he snapped. “We’re bleeding money. Our merger is delayed, our investors are panicking, and the press is sniffing around.” Alex didn’t flinch. “We’ll fix it.” “We?” the man scoffed. “No. YOU need to fix it. And quickly.” Amara felt herself shrinking in her chair. She didn’t understand every number, but she understood fear and the boardroom was full of it. “We need transparency, ” another member said. confidential information.” “Someone in this company has been leaking Her heart stopped. A leak. A crime. A missing board member. The danger she was hiding from was crawling straight into the room. She quietly lowered her gaze, hoping no one saw the sudden panic in her eyes. Alex did. He always did. He leaned slightly toward her. “Don’t react, ” he murmured. “Just breathe.” She tried. It didn’t work. An assistant rushed into the room, whispering urgently to Alex. His expression darkened immediately. “What now?” one of the older board members grumbled. Alex stood. “There was a break-in last night on the 17th floor. Security footage was wiped.” The room erupted. Amara felt ice crawl up her spine. She knew exactly why anyone would break into that floor finance and data storage. Her past wasn’t catching up. It was already here. Alex noticed the way her fingers trembled around her pen. “Amara,” he said softly. “Look at me.” She did. His voice lowered to a whisper. protect you.” “If you know something anything tell me privately. I will Her throat tightened painfully. She wanted to tell him everything. But she still remembered the dark alley, the whispered threats, the cold eyes watching her from a distance. The missing board member wasn’t just greedy he was dangerous. And he wasn’t alone. “I… I can’t, ” she breathed. Alex’s expression shifted disappointment, concern, and something else she didn’t dare name. “Not yet, ” she whispered. He nodded once, slowly. “Then stay close to me. Don’t wander off today. Understand?” She nodded. Hours passed. Alex led her through meeting after meeting, and every room felt more suffocating than the last. Twice, Amara was sure someone was staring at her. The first was a woman in a navy suit, her eyes narrowed with suspicion. The second was a young analyst who nearly flinched when Amara walked by. Did they know? Had someone talked? Was her identity slipping? She clutched her folder like it was a shield. But the worst moment came when Alex stepped into a private call, leaving her alone in a small conference room. A message slid under the door. A single sheet of paper. Her blood ran cold. She looked around. No one was there. With shaking hands, she opened it. “You shouldn’t be here. Leave before it’s too late.” The world blurred. Her vision trembled. Her breath hitched painfully in her throat. She didn’t even realize she had stepped back until her shoulder hit the glass wall. A warning. Someone inside this building knew her secret. Someone wanted her gone. Someone was watching. The door opened sharply. Alex entered mid-sentence, “and tell legal to” He froze. His eyes swept over her tear-bright eyes, her shaking hands, the message clutched between her fingers. “What happened?” he demanded, voice low and dangerous. She tried to speak. No words came out. He stepped closer. “Amara, look at me.” Her breath cracked. “Someone… someone knows. They know I’m not supposed to be here.” He slowly took the paper from her hand. His expression turned cold, deadly cold. “Who gave you this?” “I…..I don’t know. It was pushed under the door.” He exhaled sharply, dragging a hand through his hair. from the beginning.” “You should have told me everything “I was scared,” she whispered. His voice softened instantly. they can threaten you.” “I know. And I’m not angry at you. I’m angry at whoever thinks The way he said it like she mattered made her chest ache. “From now on, ” he said firmly,“you don’t go anywhere without me.” She swallowed. “Okay.” “I mean it, Amara.” “I… I understand.” He held her gaze for a long moment, his eyes dark with something protective and fierce. “You’re not alone, ” he said quietly. “I won’t let anything happen to you.” For the first time since entering this building, the knot in her stomach loosened just a little. The day ended with Alex calling an emergency security upgrade. Every door. Every camera. Every hallway. All because of her. As they stepped out of the building together, the evening air hitting their faces, Amara realized something: She wasn’t only afraid anymore. She was also angry. Angry that someone was trying to silence her again. Angry that fear had stolen her voice for so long. Angry that she had let herself feel weak. She didn’t know how to fight back yet. But she wanted to. For the first time, a small spark grew inside her a spark of strength. And Alex, walking beside her, noticed it. “Good,” he murmured. “Hold onto that.” “Hold onto what?” she asked softly. “That look in your eyes, ” he said. “That’s the beginning of courage.” She exhaled shakily. Tomorrow would be worse. More danger. More secrets. More pressure. But tomorrow, she wouldn’t face it as the same frightened girl she used to be. She was changing. Slowly. Quietly. But definitely. And the people coming after her? They had no idea what was coming.
