Jasmine's heart beat as they sped across the alley, Ethan's hold solid around her wrist. The sounds of the city faded behind them, replaced by the pounding of her heart and the heavy thud of their footsteps bouncing off the brick walls. She quickly looked back, terror squeezing in her breast as the dark-suited men came from the alleyway, their faces hidden but determined.
"Ethan, who are they?" she gasped, trying to keep pace with him. "What do they want?"
"I'll explain everything later," he said, his voice low and desperate. "Right now, we need to get to safety."
They turned a corner, quickly moving onto a quieter street. The lights flashed above them, throwing a scary angry stare on the hard road surface. Jasmine's mind raced, trying to piece together the bits of the night. Just hours ago, they had been laughing over dinner, thinking about the future. Now, her life felt like it was dissolving before her eyes.
"Where are we going?" she asked, her breath coming in short bursts.
"Just a few blocks ahead. I have a friend who can help us," he said, quickly looking over his shoulder. The strain in his voice sent a body-shake down her spine.
As they raced, Jasmine felt a mix of terror and confusion. If Ethan was in trouble, how deep did it run? "Ethan, please! You can't keep leaving me in the dark. I need to know what's happening!"
He stopped immediately, turning to face her. "You don't understand! This is risky. I can't jeopardise your safety by telling you everything right now."
Jasmine felt her frustration boil over. "I'm not a child, Ethan! I deserve to know what I'm getting into. You can't just pull me into this without an explanation!"
His look softened for a brief period, and he reached out to cup her face. "I know you're scared. I'm scared (very much) too. But I guarantee I'll protect you. You just need to trust me."
She studied his stare, expecting to find the kind words she so needed. "I do trust you, but--"
"Shh!" he interrupted, his finger pushed to his lips. They both fell silent, ears strained to catch any sound.
Jasmine could hear the distant yells of the men behind them, their footsteps drawing closer. "We can't stay here. We need to move," he strongly encouraged, pulling her along again.
They ducked into a little small restaurant, the warm, tempting fragrance of coffee engulfing them. The establishment was almost empty, a few customers surrounded by their own worlds. Ethan took her to the back, where a door opened into a tiny hallway.
"Stay close," he mumbled as he pushed through the door, guiding her to a small office space. He locked the door behind them, his expression tense.
"Who are those men?" Jasmine pressed, her heart pounding in her chest.
Ethan ran a hand through his hair, frustration etched on his face. "They're part of a criminal organization I've been trying to distance myself from. I thought I was safe, but I should have known they wouldn't let go so easily."
"Why would they want me?" she asked, her voice shaking (with fear).
"Because you're with me. They think I'm hiding something, and if they can't find it, they'll come for you to get to me."
Jasmine took a step back, her mind spinning. "What are you hiding, Ethan?"
He waited, then stepped closer, dropping his voice. "It's complicated. I got involved in some things I shouldn't have, but I was trying to break free. I wanted to protect you from all of this. I never wanted you to be involved."
"Protect me?" she echoed, disbelief flooding her voice. "By keeping secrets? By dragging me into danger?"
He looked pained, his brow grooved. "I thought I could handle it. I didn't want to ruin the life we were building together. But now..." He trailed off, frustration obvious in his posture.
Jasmine crossed her arms, feeling a mix of anger and hurt. "You think keeping me in the dark was the right choice? Now I'm in the middle of this mess because of you!"
"Damn it, Jasmine! I did this to keep you safe, not to hurt you!"
Their voices were barely above whispers, but the tension crackled like static in the air. Jasmine felt tears prick at her eyes, but she blinked them away. "I need to know what this is all about. I can't just sit here and pretend everything is fine."
Ethan stepped closer, his expression softening again. "You're right. You deserve the truth." He paused, taking a deep breath. "I was involved in a business deal that went south. I thought I could manage it, but it spiraled out of control. I've been trying to clean up the mess without pulling you in."
"Why didn't you just tell me?" she whispered, her heart hurting for the man standing before her.
"I was trying to protect you. I thought I could handle it myself. But now..." His voice trailed off as the sound of footsteps echoed outside the small restaurant.
Jasmine's heart sank. "They're coming!"
"Stay here," Ethan commanded, moving toward the door. "I'll distract them."
"No! I'm not staying behind while you put yourself in danger!" she insisted, fear clawing at her insides.
He turned, his eyes fierce. "You have to trust me. I can't let them take you."
Before she could argue, he opened the door just a c***k, looking out. Jasmine felt a sudden rush of panic. "Ethan, please!”
But he was already slipping out into the hallway, leaving her alone in the dim office. She pressed her back against the wall, her heart racing as she waited, listening for any sign of what was happening.
The muffled voices of the men reached her ears, their urgency palpable. "We know she's here! Find her!"
Jasmine felt a cold wave of fear wash over her. What if they found Ethan? What if they hurt him?
Suddenly, the office door swung open, and Ethan burst back inside, his expression frantic. "We have to go--now!"
"Where?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"The back exit. It's our only chance," he said, grabbing her hand.
As they rushed down the narrow hallway, Jasmine's mind raced. This was no longer just about her art or her dreams. It was about survival. And as they reached the back door, the seriousness of their situation crashed down on her.
"Jasmine!" Ethan's voice broke through her thoughts. "We're going to get through this. I promise."
But just as they stepped outside, a figure blocked their path--a tall man in a dark suit, an evil smile spreading across his face.
"Going somewhere?" he taunted, his voice dripping with cruelty.
And at that moment, Jasmine realized that the real danger was only just beginning.
