The Sanctuary of Moonhaven
The towering silver gates of Moonhaven opened without a sound.
Lyra stepped inside, her boots crunching softly on a path lined with glowing white flowers. Crystal fountains shimmered beneath the morning sun, and elegant buildings carved from pale stone surrounded the valley. White wolves roamed freely, unafraid of the people who passed by.
For the first time since her parents' death, Lyra felt a strange sense of peace.
The elderly woman in white robes smiled warmly.
"My name is Elder Seraphina," she said. "I have waited many years for your arrival."
"You... knew I would come?" Lyra asked.
Seraphina nodded.
"The Moon Goddess revealed it long ago. The child bearing the Shadow Mark would one day return to Moonhaven."
Lyra looked down at the black crescent mark on her shoulder.
"It has caused nothing but pain."
Seraphina gently placed a hand over Lyra's.
"No, child. People fear what they do not understand."
Lucien smiled quietly.
"I told you she wasn't cursed."
Seraphina turned toward him.
"You have done well, Lucien."
She then looked back at Lyra.
"Come with me."
Inside the palace, the walls were covered with beautiful murals showing ancient werewolves standing beside glowing wolves beneath a full moon.
Lyra stopped before one enormous painting.
A woman with silver eyes stood beside a powerful Alpha. Around them, dark and silver light intertwined without destroying one another.
"Who are they?" Lyra asked.
Seraphina's expression softened.
"Queen Selene, the first Shadow Queen... and King Orion, her fated mate."
"They united the werewolf kingdoms over five hundred years ago."
Lyra stared at the painting.
"The woman has the same mark as me."
"She does."
"Was she... evil?"
Seraphina smiled.
"No."
"She sacrificed her life to save every pack."
Lyra felt her chest tighten.
"So the stories I've heard..."
"Were lies," Seraphina finished gently.
"History was rewritten by those who feared the Shadow Bloodline."
Later that afternoon, Lyra was shown to a simple but comfortable room overlooking the crystal lake.
She stood on the balcony, watching white wolves play along the shore.
A soft knock came at the door.
Lucien entered carrying a small wooden box.
"I thought these belonged to you."
He handed it to her.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Inside was a silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon, a faded photograph of her parents, and a leather-bound journal.
Tears filled her eyes.
"This... this was my mother's."
Lucien nodded.
"She asked me to keep it safe until you were ready."
Lyra carefully opened the journal.
On the first page was a handwritten message.
My dearest Lyra,
If you are reading this, then I am no longer with you. Never believe anyone who tells you that your power makes you a monster. Your heart—not your blood—will decide what kind of woman you become. Trust those who earn your trust, forgive only when your heart is ready, and never let hatred consume you. We have always loved you, and we always will.
Love, Mother.
A tear landed on the page.
"I miss you," Lyra whispered.
Lucien quietly left the room, giving her the privacy she needed.
Meanwhile, back at Blackthorn Castle, Kael stood in the training arena, attacking a wooden practice post with relentless force.
Each strike splintered the thick wood.
His warriors watched from a distance.
No one dared interrupt him.
Finally, Damon approached.
"You've been training since sunrise."
Kael stopped.
"I can't stop thinking about her."
Damon sighed.
"You still care."
"I never stopped."
"Then why reject her?"
Kael closed his eyes.
"I thought I was protecting everyone."
"And now?"
Kael looked toward the mountains.
"Now I'm beginning to wonder if I was only protecting my own fear."
Before Damon could respond, a young scout rushed into the arena.
"My Alpha!"
Kael turned.
"What is it?"
"We captured one of Varek's spies."
"Bring him."
Moments later, a wounded rogue was dragged before the Alpha.
Kael knelt in front of him.
"Why was Varek hunting Lyra?"
The rogue laughed weakly.
"You still don't know?"
Kael's patience wore thin.
"Speak."
The rogue grinned.
"The Shadow Heir isn't your enemy."
"She's the only one who can stop our master."
Kael frowned.
"Our master?"
Before the rogue could answer, his eyes widened in terror.
A black symbol appeared on his neck.
"What..."
The symbol glowed.
Then—
Boom!
The rogue collapsed, lifeless.
Damon stepped back in shock.
"He was silenced."
Kael's expression darkened.
"Someone doesn't want us learning the truth."
That evening, Moonhaven gathered in the central courtyard beneath the rising moon.
Elder Seraphina stood before Lyra.
"Tonight," she announced, "your training begins."
She raised an ancient silver staff.
The air shimmered.
A circle of glowing runes appeared beneath Lyra's feet.
"Close your eyes," Seraphina instructed.
Lyra obeyed.
The moment she did, the Shadow Mark flared.
A vision filled her mind.
She saw a battlefield covered in fire.
Thousands of wolves fought beneath a blood-red sky.
At the center stood a man wearing a crown of black steel.
His face was hidden, but his voice echoed across the battlefield.
"Bring me the Shadow Queen."
Lyra gasped and opened her eyes.
Her breathing was uneven.
Seraphina looked at her with concern.
"What did you see?"
Lyra swallowed hard.
"A war."
She hesitated.
"And someone... someone is coming for me."
Far away, in the deepest chamber of a forgotten fortress, the hooded ruler slowly opened his eyes.
A servant knelt before him.
"My lord... the Ravens are ready."
The mysterious ruler smiled.
"Good."
He stepped toward the shadows.
"Tell them to leave no witnesses."
"The hunt for the Shadow Queen begins tonight."
