The First Trial
Moonhaven awoke before sunrise.
The valley was covered in a blanket of silver mist, and the distant sound of waterfalls echoed between the mountains. Lyra stood in the training courtyard, wearing a simple black training outfit. Her muscles were still sore from the previous day's vision, but she refused to complain.
Elder Seraphina approached with Lucien beside her.
"Today," Seraphina said, "you will face your first trial."
Lyra nodded. "I'm ready."
The elder smiled gently.
"Confidence is good. Pride is dangerous."
With a wave of her silver staff, the stone floor trembled. Ancient symbols glowed beneath Lyra's feet, forming a large circle.
"This is the Circle of Truth," Seraphina explained. "It does not test your strength. It tests your heart."
Lyra frowned.
"My heart?"
"Your greatest enemy is not Varek," Seraphina replied. "It is fear. Until you master it, your power will remain unstable."
Lucien stepped back.
"The trial begins now."
The glowing runes flared brightly.
A blinding light surrounded Lyra.
When the light faded, Moonhaven had disappeared.
She stood alone in the ruins of Blackthorn Pack.
Smoke filled the sky.
Houses burned.
The cries of wolves echoed through the streets.
Lyra looked around in horror.
"What is this?"
A familiar voice answered.
"You did this."
She turned and saw Beta Rowan.
His clothes were stained with blood.
"You destroyed everyone."
"No!" Lyra cried. "I would never—"
Before she could finish, more figures appeared.
Villagers.
Warriors.
Children.
Each one pointed at her.
"Monster."
"Cursed."
"You brought darkness."
Their voices grew louder until they became a deafening chorus.
Lyra covered her ears.
"Stop!"
But the accusations continued.
"You don't belong."
"No one will ever love you."
"Even your mate rejected you."
Those last words pierced her heart.
She fell to her knees.
Tears streamed down her face.
For a moment, she wanted to believe them.
Then she remembered her mother's letter.
"Never believe anyone who tells you that your power makes you a monster."
Lyra slowly stood.
She wiped away her tears.
"I'm done running from who I am."
The illusion began to c***k.
The angry voices faded.
The burning village disappeared.
A warm silver light surrounded her.
When she opened her eyes again, she was back in the Circle of Truth.
Seraphina smiled proudly.
"You passed."
Lucien nodded.
"You faced your fear instead of letting it control you."
Before Lyra could respond, a loud alarm echoed across Moonhaven.
A horn.
Long and urgent.
Warriors rushed through the valley.
One of them ran toward Seraphina.
"Elder!"
"What happened?"
"The outer barrier has been breached!"
Lucien's face darkened.
"Impossible."
"No outsider has ever found Moonhaven."
Another warrior arrived, breathing heavily.
"It wasn't rogues."
"It was the Ravens."
Seraphina's expression changed instantly.
"The assassins..."
Miles away, Kael stood on the balcony of Blackthorn Castle, unable to shake the uneasy feeling in his chest.
His wolf paced restlessly inside his mind.
"Something is wrong."
Kael clenched the stone railing.
"I feel it too."
Damon hurried toward him.
"My Alpha!"
Kael turned.
"What is it?"
"We've received word from our northern scouts."
"They intercepted strange tracks leading toward the Silver Peaks."
Kael's eyes narrowed.
"How many?"
"At least twenty."
"They were moving with military precision."
Kael's heart sank.
"The Ravens."
Damon looked surprised.
"You've heard of them?"
Kael nodded.
"They're not ordinary assassins."
"They never fail."
Without another word, Kael drew his sword.
"Gather our fastest warriors."
"We're leaving immediately."
Back in Moonhaven, panic spread through the peaceful valley.
Warriors took defensive positions along the walls.
Children and elders were escorted into underground shelters.
Lyra watched everyone preparing for battle.
She looked at Lucien.
"Who are the Ravens?"
He answered quietly.
"The deadliest assassins in the werewolf world."
"They don't fight for honor."
"They fight for whoever pays the highest price."
"And today..."
"They've come for you."
Before Lyra could speak, an explosion rocked the valley.
The western gate shattered.
Dark figures dressed in black cloaks poured into Moonhaven.
Each wore a silver raven mask.
Each carried twin curved blades.
Their leader stepped forward slowly.
Unlike the others, his mask was black instead of silver.
He removed it.
A young man with icy blue eyes smiled calmly.
"So..."
"The Shadow Princess has finally been found."
He bowed politely.
"My name is Cassian."
"I've been hired to bring you back."
Lyra took a step backward.
"And if I refuse?"
Cassian's smile disappeared.
"Then..."
He drew both blades.
"I'll bring back your body instead."
The Ravens charged as one.
Steel flashed beneath the morning sun.
Moonhaven's first true battle had begun.
