The Bond They Could Not Break
A heavy silence settled over Moonhaven.
The words of Elder Seraphina echoed through the courtyard.
"The Moon Goddess has chosen a second guardian."
"You."
Kael stood motionless, unable to take his eyes off Lyra. He had spent days convincing himself that rejecting her was the only way to stop the prophecy. Yet now, another prophecy had declared that only by standing beside her could the darkness be defeated.
Damon broke the silence.
"Are you saying the Alpha and Lyra must fight together?"
Seraphina nodded solemnly.
"The Shadow Queen and the Alpha King are two halves of the same destiny. Alone, they will fail. Together, they have a chance."
Lyra's expression hardened.
"I don't accept that."
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked directly at Kael.
"I trusted fate once. It only brought me pain."
Kael lowered his head.
"I know."
"No," Lyra replied quietly. "You know regret. I know humiliation."
Her words struck him harder than any weapon.
That evening, the healers treated the wounded while the fallen guardians were honored beneath the moonlight. Moonhaven had survived, but the cost had been heavy.
Lyra walked alone to the crystal lake, seeking a moment of peace.
The water reflected the full moon like polished silver.
She removed the pendant her mother had left her and held it tightly.
"I wish you were here," she whispered.
Behind her, footsteps approached.
She didn't need to turn around.
"I told you to stop following me."
Kael stopped a few steps away.
"I came to apologize."
Lyra let out a bitter laugh.
"An apology won't erase what happened."
"I know."
"I thought rejecting you would protect my people."
"And instead?" she asked.
Kael's voice was filled with regret.
"Instead, I hurt the one person I was supposed to protect."
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Lyra turned to face him.
"I don't hate you."
Kael looked surprised.
"But I don't trust you either."
"I'll earn it."
"You can't demand forgiveness."
"I'm not asking for it."
"I'm asking for a chance."
Before Lyra could answer, a sharp pain shot through her shoulder.
She cried out as the Shadow Mark began to glow.
At the same moment, Kael grabbed his chest.
The mate bond pulsed between them like an invisible thread.
Seraphina hurried toward them.
"It's happening."
Lucien frowned.
"What is?"
"The bond is awakening."
Dark clouds gathered above Moonhaven.
A powerful wind swept across the valley.
The ground shook beneath everyone's feet.
Suddenly, a pillar of silver light shot into the sky from the center of the lake.
The water began to swirl violently.
From its depths, an ancient stone altar slowly rose to the surface.
Everyone stared in amazement.
"It can't be..." Seraphina whispered.
"The Altar of the Moon."
The altar had been hidden for centuries.
Its appearance meant only one thing.
"The Moon Goddess is calling them," Seraphina said.
Kael and Lyra exchanged uncertain glances.
As if guided by an unseen force, they stepped toward the altar.
The moment they placed their hands upon its surface, brilliant silver light surrounded them.
A voice echoed across the valley.
"Children of fate..."
Everyone fell to one knee.
"The darkness grows stronger."
"The enemy you seek has already entered your world."
Visions flashed before Lyra and Kael.
A fortress of black stone.
A throne surrounded by flames.
A man wearing a crown of obsidian.
His face was hidden beneath a hood.
He slowly lifted his head.
His glowing crimson eyes stared directly at them.
Then he smiled.
"Find me... if you can."
The vision shattered.
Kael stumbled backward, breathing heavily.
Lyra nearly collapsed, but Lucien caught her.
"What did you see?" Lucien asked.
Kael answered first.
"The enemy."
Lyra nodded.
"He knows we're coming."
Before anyone could speak again, a young Moonhaven scout raced into the courtyard.
"Elder Seraphina!"
She turned.
"What is it?"
The scout struggled to catch his breath.
"We've captured one of the Ravens."
Cassian had been caught.
Moments later, the Raven leader was brought forward in silver chains.
Despite being surrounded by warriors, he smiled confidently.
Kael stepped toward him.
"Who sent you?"
Cassian remained silent.
Lucien narrowed his eyes.
"Answer him."
Cassian looked at Lyra instead.
"I warned you."
"Warned me about what?" she asked.
"The real enemy."
He laughed softly.
"You think Varek is the one pulling the strings."
His smile faded.
"He's only a servant."
The courtyard fell silent.
Kael's expression darkened.
"Who is the master?"
Cassian looked toward the dark mountains beyond Moonhaven.
His voice dropped to a whisper.
"The Shadow King..."
Every elder gasped.
Even Seraphina looked frightened.
"The Shadow King died centuries ago," she said.
Cassian slowly shook his head.
"No."
"He has been waiting."
The wind howled through the valley.
High above, black ravens circled the moon.
Far away, inside the obsidian fortress, the mysterious ruler stood before a giant map of the werewolf kingdoms.
A servant knelt before him.
"My King... Cassian has been captured."
The ruler smiled calmly.
"Exactly as planned."
He picked up a black chess piece shaped like a queen and placed it on the map.
"The Shadow Queen has taken her first step."
He then placed a silver wolf beside it.
"And now..."
He whispered with satisfaction.
"The Alpha has returned to the board."
His crimson eyes gleamed with anticipation.
"The real game begins now."
