Dark obsession: chapter eleven

900 Words
The Traitor's Mask The palace trembled as another explosion echoed beneath Moonhaven. Dust rained from the ceiling, and frightened voices filled the corridors. "The Sacred Vault has been breached!" a guard shouted. "Protect the elders!" Kael drew his sword instantly. "Damon, secure the palace. No one enters or leaves Moonhaven." "Yes, my Alpha!" Warriors scattered in every direction, searching every hall, tower, and passage. Seraphina leaned heavily on her silver staff. "If the Moonstone has truly been stolen, the Shadow King's followers have taken a huge step toward breaking the ancient seal." Lyra looked at the frightened faces around her. "There has to be a way to get it back." "There is," Lucien replied. "But first, we must discover who helped them." Cassian, still bound in silver chains, laughed softly. "I told you... the Ravens never work alone." Kael walked toward him, his golden eyes filled with anger. "If you're lying—" "I'm not." Cassian looked around the hall. "The traitor is closer than you think." Moonhaven's warriors searched every room until they reached the palace kitchen. One of the cooks stood trembling beside an open window. "I... I saw someone." "Who?" Damon demanded. "I couldn't see the face." "What were they wearing?" "A white cloak..." Everyone froze. Only Moonhaven's healers and elders wore white robes. The traitor wasn't an outsider. It was someone trusted. Later that evening, Seraphina gathered everyone in the council chamber. Twenty elders sat in a circle while Kael, Lyra, Lucien, Damon, and Cassian stood in the center. Seraphina spoke first. "For hundreds of years, Moonhaven has never known betrayal." Her eyes filled with sadness. "Tonight... that has changed." An elderly man named Elder Marcus stepped forward. "Perhaps the Ravens disguised themselves." Lucien shook his head. "The palace barrier only allows those carrying Moonhaven's sacred mark to enter." Kael frowned. "So the thief was someone from inside." Silence filled the chamber. No one wanted to believe it. Then... A young healer named Elara suddenly burst through the doors. "Elder Seraphina!" She was out of breath. "I found something." She handed Seraphina a small silver pendant. "It was lying outside the Sacred Vault." Seraphina's expression darkened. "This belongs to..." She looked across the room. "...Brother Alden." Everyone turned toward an elderly monk standing near the back. His face became pale. "I can explain." Kael stepped forward. "Then explain." Alden sighed deeply. "I didn't steal the Moonstone." "Then how did your pendant get there?" Damon asked. Alden lowered his head. "Someone took it from my room three nights ago." Cassian chuckled. "A clever move." "The real traitor wanted someone else to take the blame." Meanwhile, deep within the Black Forest, a cloaked rider raced through the darkness. Hidden beneath the cloak was the stolen Moonstone. The rider finally reached the ruins of an abandoned temple. Varek stepped from the shadows. "You have it?" The rider nodded. "The Moonstone." Varek smiled. "Our master will be pleased." The rider removed the hood. It wasn't Brother Alden. It wasn't any elder. It was... Captain Rylan. One of Moonhaven's most respected commanders. Varek laughed. "The perfect spy." Rylan looked uneasy. "I've done my part." "When do I receive the cure?" Varek's smile faded. "Soon." "You promised!" Rylan snapped. "My daughter is dying!" Varek stepped closer. "And she will live..." "...if you continue obeying the Shadow King." Rylan clenched his fists. He had betrayed Moonhaven not for power... ...but to save his only child. Back in Moonhaven, Lyra couldn't sleep. She walked alone through the moonlit gardens. The events of the day replayed over and over in her mind. She had finally found a place where she belonged. Now betrayal threatened to destroy it. A familiar voice broke the silence. "You always come here when you're thinking." Lyra turned. Kael stood a few steps away. She smiled faintly. "I'm starting to notice you do the same." He laughed quietly. "For once, you're right." They walked slowly beside the crystal lake. "I've been thinking," Kael said. "About what?" "The future." Lyra looked at him. "I'm not ready to think that far ahead." "I know." He stopped walking. "But whether you forgive me or not..." "I'll protect you." Lyra studied his face. For the first time, she didn't see the proud Alpha who had rejected her. She saw a man carrying the weight of his mistakes. Before she could answer, the Shadow Mark suddenly burned. She gasped. At the same moment, Kael grabbed the pendant around his neck. "It... it's the mate bond." A vision flashed before both of them. They saw a frightened little girl locked inside a dark stone room. She was crying. "Papa..." Then the vision disappeared. Lyra looked at Kael in shock. "Did you see that?" He nodded slowly. "The little girl..." "Who is she?" Lyra whispered. Lucien suddenly appeared behind them. His expression had turned grave. "I know who she is." Both of them turned. "Her name is Mira." Lucien's voice was heavy with sorrow. "She is Captain Rylan's daughter." Lyra frowned. "What does she have to do with the Moonstone?" Lucien looked toward the dark mountains. "Everything." "If I'm right..." He paused. "...Rylan didn't betray Moonhaven because he wanted to." "He betrayed us because someone he loved was taken hostage." The truth was finally beginning to unfold. And somewhere in the shadows... The Shadow King smiled. His plan was working exactly as he intended. End of Chapter Eleven
