Dark obsession: chapter16

The Heart Crystal The camp was thrown into chaos. Captain Rylan lay on the forest floor, struggling to breathe as dark veins spread from the arrow wound across his chest. Every few seconds, he winced in pain, his body trembling uncontrollably. Lucien carefully examined the black arrow before snapping the shaft in half. "This is Shadow Poison," he said grimly. "It attacks both the body and the wolf spirit." Lyra knelt beside Rylan. "There has to be a cure." "There is," Seraphina's voice echoed through Lyra's memory. "The Heart Crystal has the power to heal any darkness created by the Shadow King." Lucien looked at Kael. "We must reach the Crystal Forest before sunrise tomorrow." Kael nodded. "We leave now." Damon looked around at the exhausted warriors. "They've been fighting all day." "We don't have a choice," Kael replied. "Every minute we lose brings Rylan closer to death." The group continued their journey beneath the moonlight. The Crystal Forest grew stranger the deeper they traveled. The trees sparkled as though thousands of tiny stars were trapped inside their branches. Rivers glowed with pale blue light, and the air carried a soft humming sound that made Lyra feel both peaceful and uneasy. After several hours, Lucien suddenly raised his hand. "Stop." Everyone froze. Ahead stood three ancient stone archways. Each bore a different symbol. A wolf. A crown. A crescent moon. "What is this?" Damon asked. Lucien studied the carvings. "The Path of Judgment." "Only one path leads to the Heart Crystal." "And the others?" Kael asked. Lucien's expression became serious. "They are filled with deadly illusions." Lyra stepped closer to the archways. The crescent moon symbol on one arch began to glow. At the same time, the Shadow Mark on her shoulder warmed. "I think..." she whispered. "It wants me to choose." She closed her eyes and listened to the quiet voice inside her heart. Slowly, she walked toward the archway marked with the crescent moon. The instant she crossed the threshold, the other two archways crumbled into dust. Lucien smiled. "The Crystal accepted her." Beyond the archway lay a breathtaking valley hidden deep within the mountains. Crystal flowers bloomed across the ground, reflecting every color of the rainbow. At the center of the valley stood a towering crystal tree unlike anything Lyra had ever seen. Suspended beneath its branches was a glowing red crystal the size of a human heart. "The Heart Crystal," Lucien whispered. Everyone stared in amazement. Before they could approach, a powerful voice echoed across the valley. "Only those with pure intentions may claim the Heart Crystal." An enormous white wolf emerged from behind the crystal tree. Its fur shimmered like fresh snow beneath the moonlight, and its silver eyes held centuries of wisdom. Kael immediately lowered his sword. "The Guardian." The ancient wolf looked directly at Lyra. "Why have you come?" Lyra stepped forward. "To save a life." The Guardian tilted its head. "Many have spoken those words." "What makes you different?" Lyra thought for a long moment before answering. "I cannot promise I will never make mistakes." "I cannot promise I will never be afraid." "But I can promise that I will never stop protecting those who cannot protect themselves." The Guardian studied her silently. Then it looked toward the unconscious Captain Rylan. "You seek no power for yourself." "You seek hope for another." The great wolf stepped aside. "The Heart Crystal is yours." As Lyra reached for the glowing crystal, the ground suddenly shook. A burst of black smoke erupted behind them. Malrik stepped from the shadows, applauding slowly. "Very impressive." Kael immediately drew his sword. "You followed us." Malrik smiled. "I knew the Guardian would never let me claim the crystal." "But you..." He pointed toward Lyra. "...made it easy." Before anyone could react, dozens of Shadow Soldiers poured into the valley. The peaceful sanctuary erupted into battle. Kael charged straight toward Malrik. Their swords clashed with explosive force. Damon and the warriors defended Captain Rylan while Lucien held back the Shadow Soldiers. Lyra grasped the Heart Crystal. The moment her fingers touched it, warm light flowed through her entire body. A brilliant crimson-and-silver glow surrounded her. The Guardian's voice echoed inside her mind. "The Heart Crystal does not grant strength." "It reveals the strength already within you." Lyra lifted the crystal high. A wave of radiant light spread across the battlefield. Every Shadow Soldier struck by the light dissolved into mist. Malrik staggered backward, shielding his eyes. "No..." "This power..." Kael seized the opportunity, knocking Malrik's sword from his hand. Malrik looked around and realized the battle was lost. He smiled coldly. "This victory won't save you." He crushed another black crystal. Dark smoke swallowed him, and he vanished. Silence returned to the valley. Lyra hurried to Captain Rylan's side and gently placed the Heart Crystal over his wound. The crystal glowed brightly. The black veins began to disappear. Within moments, Rylan opened his eyes. "Mira..." he whispered. Lyra smiled with relief. "You're going to see her again." The warriors cheered as Rylan slowly sat up. But their celebration was short-lived. The Guardian suddenly looked toward the distant mountains. Its calm expression turned grave. "The final battle draws near." Everyone followed its gaze. Far away, Black Hollow Mountain was glowing crimson once again. A thunderous c***k echoed across the land. Lucien's face went pale. "The seal..." He swallowed hard. "The third and final fracture has begun." The Shadow King was on the verge of escaping. End of Chapter Sixteen
