Cal swats me in the chest so hard I double over, coughing. “What the hell are you staring at?” He stands with his hands on his hips, chewing an entire donut in one bite. I have no idea what the hell just happened here, but I’m shaken. “Who was that girl?” I ask, staring down the hall toward the direction my brother just disappeared.” Cal blinks at me a few times. “Maddie, she just said, right? Nicole’s friend? Writer, apparently?” When I still don’t say anything he slides me a donut and shrugs. “We’ve met her before.” I shake my head. “She didn’t look like that before,” I tell him. “Look like what,” he asks, cramming another donut in his mouth. Like something inexplicable, I think. Like a perplexing blend of amazing and sunshine. “I don’t know,” I say, hesitantly. “Like that.”
