chapter 24

The night had fallen completely. But for Kael… Darkness wasn’t something to fear. It was something he controlled. The forest stretched endlessly before him, silent under the weight of something unnatural. Even the animals had disappeared, as if they knew what was coming. War. Kael moved without a sound, his body blending into the shadows as if he belonged there. Behind him, the rogues followed at a distance, splitting into smaller groups just as planned. Everything was precise. Calculated. Deadly. “They’re close,” one of the rogues whispered through the communication link. Kael didn’t respond. He didn’t need to. Because he could feel it. The bond. Weak… But pulling him forward like a thread tied to his soul. Luna. His jaw tightened. “Hold on…” he murmured under his breath. The ground shifted slightly beneath his feet as he stopped abruptly. His eyes narrowed. “There.” Ahead of him, barely visible through the darkness, stood a massive structure carved into the side of a rocky cliff. Hidden. Almost invisible to the untrained eye. But not to him. “So that’s where they’re hiding…” The air around the place felt wrong. Heavy. Sealed. Protected. “They built this to contain something…” one rogue muttered quietly behind him. Kael’s gaze hardened. “Not something.” A pause. “Someone.” Silence fell again. Because they all knew who. Kael stepped forward slowly, scanning every inch of the structure. Guards. Hidden positions. Energy barriers. Traps. Everything about it screamed preparation. “They’re expecting us,” another rogue said. Kael’s lips curved slightly. “Good.” A dangerous glint appeared in his eyes. “Then we don’t disappoint.” He turned slightly toward the group behind him. “Positions.” No hesitation. No questions. They moved instantly. Spreading out into the darkness. Surrounding the structure. Predators closing in. Kael remained still for a moment longer. Feeling. Listening. The bond pulsed again. Stronger this time. But unstable. Wrong. His chest tightened. “…Luna.” Something was happening to her. Something bad. And he was running out of time. His eyes darkened completely. “No more waiting.” And then— He moved. Fast. The first guard didn’t even have time to react. Kael appeared behind him, his hand gripping the man’s throat before slamming him into the ground with brutal force. A sharp crack echoed. Silence. One down. The second turned— Too late. Kael’s blade flashed through the air. Another body dropped. No noise. No mercy. Just efficiency. Inside the structure— Alarms suddenly blared. Loud. Sharp. “They’re inside!” Kael didn’t stop. Didn’t slow down. He stepped through the entrance like a storm unleashed. And behind him— The rogues attacked. The night exploded into chaos. --- Inside… Darkness again. Cold. Still. Luna’s breathing was uneven. Her body still trembling from what she had experienced earlier. But something had changed. Subtly. Dangerously. Her head was lowered, strands of her hair falling over her face as she sat in silence. The chains were still there. Still glowing. Still suppressing her. But not completely. Not anymore. A faint pulse flickered beneath her skin. Different from before. Darker. More stable. More… aware. Her fingers twitched slowly. Then again. Her head lifted slightly. Her eyes— They weren’t the same. There was something new in them. Something deeper. Colder. More dangerous. “They were right…” she whispered softly. Her voice… It sounded different. Calmer. Detached. “I can feel it now…” The energy inside her stirred again. Not violently. Not painfully. But willingly. Responding. Like it had been waiting for her to stop fighting. A faint crack appeared along the glowing chain around her wrist. Her gaze shifted to it slowly. “…so this is what you were holding back.” Her lips parted slightly. Not in fear. But in realization. And something else. Something darker. A faint smile. Far away— Kael froze mid-step. His eyes widened slightly. The bond. It surged. Strong. Violent. Different. “What…?” His chest tightened painfully. “That’s not…” That wasn’t the same Luna. Not the one he left behind. His expression darkened instantly. “No…” He moved faster. Faster than before. Breaking through anyone in his path. He could feel it clearly now. The shift. The change. And it terrified him. Back in the chamber— The chain cracked again. Then— Shattered. The sound echoed sharply. Luna slowly stood up. Free. The remaining chain still hung loosely from her other wrist. But it didn’t matter anymore. Her power… It was back. And stronger than ever. The doors burst open suddenly. Guards rushed in. Weapons raised. “Contain her!” Too late. Luna lifted her hand slowly. Almost lazily. The energy responded instantly. Not explosive. Not wild. Absolute. The guards froze mid-motion. Their bodies locked in place. Eyes wide with fear. Then— Cracks formed across their skin. Dark. Spreading. And in the next second— They collapsed. Lifeless. Silence returned. Luna stood in the middle of the room. Unmoving. Untouched. Her breathing calm. Too calm. “…this is who I am?” she murmured. A pause. Then— “No…” Her eyes darkened further. “This is what I was meant to be.” And somewhere in the distance— Kael was coming. Fast. Desperate. Too late… Or just in time.
