chapter 6

The room was silent after the pulse of energy faded. Kael’s chest rose and fell unevenly, his dark eyes locked on hers with a mix of disbelief and something she hadn’t seen before. Something… vulnerable. “Luna…” he whispered, his voice low, trembling slightly. Her heart skipped a beat. “You… just—” “I didn’t mean to,” she admitted softly, her fingers still lightly resting on his chest. He took a slow breath, as if trying to steady himself. “This shouldn’t be happening,” he muttered. Her gaze dropped to the faint glow of the remaining cracks on his skin. “They’re… fading.” “Yes.” His voice was almost a growl now, low, deep, vibrating in her chest. “You don’t understand what this means.” “I… I feel it,” she admitted quietly. “Something… alive. Something inside you reacts to me.” Kael’s jaw tightened, his eyes darkening. “Yes,” he said. “And that terrifies me.” Her heart clenched painfully. “Why?” she asked softly. “I just touched you. I didn’t mean—” “You don’t understand!” he snapped, stepping closer. Her back pressed again against the cold wall, but she didn’t move away. She couldn’t. Her body was already betraying her. “You’re not just tied to me,” he continued, his voice dropping lower, almost dangerous. “You’re part of it. The curse… it’s reacting to your blood, your presence… it’s alive in you too.” Her pulse spiked violently. “My blood?” she whispered. “I don’t understand.” He shook his head, frustration clear in the tense set of his shoulders. “You will,” he said quietly, almost to himself. “Soon.” She could feel the tension between them, heavy and suffocating. “Kael…” she breathed, stepping slightly closer despite herself. “What do you want from me?” He froze at the sound of her voice, dark eyes widening slightly. “I… don’t know yet,” he admitted finally, voice rough. “But I know this—if I let you go, if I let you leave me, the curse will destroy us both.” Her chest tightened painfully. “You mean…” she began, fear and awe mixing in her voice, “if I leave, you’ll die?” Kael’s gaze dropped for a brief moment, a flash of raw emotion breaking through the mask of his darkness. “Yes.” The word landed like a hammer in her chest. She had never felt so small, so… responsible, in her life. “You—” she started, then swallowed, her throat tightening. “You don’t deserve this.” He lifted his gaze slowly, his eyes burning into hers. “Luna,” he said softly, dangerously. “I don’t get to deserve anything. Not the curse. Not you. Nothing.” Her lips parted slightly. “Then… why me?” she whispered, voice trembling. “Because,” he said, stepping closer, his body just inches from hers, “you’re the one who can save me. You’re the one who can undo this… or destroy me completely.” Her heart raced violently. “Kael…” Before she could finish, he leaned slightly closer. The scent of him, dark and intoxicating, filled her senses. Her breath hitched. “You feel it too,” he murmured, his voice low, rough. “The pull. The bond. The curse… it’s reacting to you.” She couldn’t move. Couldn’t speak. Couldn’t think clearly. His face hovered near hers now, the tension electric, impossible to ignore. “Luna,” he breathed. “Kael…” she whispered. The distance between them was unbearable. Every heartbeat, every breath, every pulse of energy connecting them made the air around them heavy, alive, dangerous. And then— He brushed a stray lock of hair from her face. Light. Gentle. Tender. But the effect was catastrophic. Her knees nearly gave out. Her pulse skyrocketed. His thumb lingered on her cheek. “Don’t fight it,” he murmured. “I… I’m trying not to,” she breathed. But how could she resist when he was this close? When every fiber of her body was screaming his name? When the bond, the curse, the pull… all demanded her attention? He leaned even closer. Closer. Until their foreheads nearly touched. Her breath mingled with his. The heat between them was unbearable. “I… I can’t…” she whispered. “Yes,” he said softly. “You can.” Before she could react, his lips brushed against hers. Not fully. Not yet. Just… a tease. A test. Her body shivered violently at the contact. Her mind screamed. Her heart raced. Her soul… it recognized him. Her hands went to his chest instinctively. His hands found her waist, holding her close, steadying her, claiming her. The kiss deepened slightly, tentative but powerful. It was dangerous. It was forbidden. And yet… she couldn’t resist. Neither could he. Every beat of her heart, every pulse of the curse, every moment she lingered against him… it tied them closer together. Too close to resist. Too close to escape. And somewhere deep inside, Luna realized… she didn’t want to.
