Generations of Blind Hatred

333 Words
As years passed, Rhega and Shi grew old, their once-strong bodies now frail with age. Yet, despite the passing of time, their children carried on the bitter feud. The sons of Rhega and Shi refused to marry from each other’s families, their hearts and minds hardened by decades of inherited hatred. The daughters, raised on stories of betrayal and insult, were taught never to trust "those people." Even in times of drought and hunger, when the village itself cried out for aid, neither side would dare ask the other for help. There were no handouts, no exchanges of food, no offers of shelter in times of need. The village had become divided not just by geography, but by an invisible wall, built of resentment, fear, and pride. One day, as the sun dipped low over Burhinyi, a young boy named Bulambo, who secretly had friends on both sides, asked his grandfather, "Why do we hate them?" The old man, bent with age and years of accumulated wisdom, opened his mouth to answer, but found no words. He had never questioned it. His hatred, like that of his ancestors, had been ingrained in him from a young age. It was not something he had chosen, but something that had been handed down through generations like a shadow that never left. Disturbed by the boy’s simple question, the old man began to investigate, seeking answers that had eluded him for his entire life. He spoke to the oldest villagers, hoping to uncover the root of the bitterness. He listened closely to the traders who visited Burhinyi, hearing their gossip, and sifting through their half-truths. And then, he discovered the truth the real enemies had not been the people of Shi’s clan, nor Rhega’s family, but the strangers who had whispered lies for generations. While the villagers fought amongst themselves, the outsiders had quietly stolen what was rightfully theirs their cattle, their land, their livelihoods. It was not hatred that had torn them apart, but deception.
