The flames illuminated the valley, turning the night into something that was almost day, casting shadows that danced and shifted and seemed to watch the men who were running, who were dying, who were trying to escape the inferno that had been meant for someone else. Reyes moved through the smoke, Jack's arm across her shoulders, Martinez on his other side, their bodies pressed together, their steps uncertain, their lungs burning with the ash and the dust and the heat of the fire that was following them.
