Lina Vale had made a decision the moment she woke up that morning.
She would avoid Adrian Blackwood completely,
No eye contact, No unnecessary words, No standing too close
No giving him the chance to look at her like that again.
Like he knew something she didn’t.
“Lina!”
She turned quickly as Mrs. Dalloway approached, her expression sharper than usual.
“Yes, ma’am?”
“You’ve been reassigned.”
Lina frowned slightly. “Reassigned?”
A pause.
“You’ll be working directly for Mr. Blackwood from now on.”
The words hit harder than they should have.
“I will..? Sorry??”
“You’re now his personal maid,” Mrs. Dalloway repeated, clearly irritated. “Try not to ruin it.”
Lina’s stomach tightened.
Of course.
Of course, it had to be him.
The hallway outside Adrian’s private office felt colder than the rest of the house.
Lina stood still for a moment, steadying herself before knocking.
“Come in.” His voice was calm.
Too calm.
She opened the door, and there he was.
Seated behind a sleek glass desk, sleeves rolled slightly, tie loosened just enough to suggest ease but nothing about him was relaxed.
His eyes lifted to meet hers instantly.
Like he’d been waiting.
“Close the door,” he said.
Lina hesitated just for a second,
Then she did.
The soft click echoed louder than it should have.
“You’re late.”
“I was told to report at nine. It’s nine,” she said
Adrian glanced at the clock it's exactly 9:00
His gaze returned to her, unreadable.
“You’re precise.”
“I like to do my job properly,” she said
“And what exactly do you think your job is now?”
Lina met his gaze.
“To assist you.”
“Assist me how?”
A test, Everything with him felt like a test to Lina
“However you require,” she answered
“Come here.”
Her pulse shifted.
But she didn’t argue.
She walked toward him, stopping at a careful distance from his desk.
Closer he said and stared at her,
Her jaw tightened slightly.
Still, she stepped forward.
Now she was standing right in front of him.
Too close.
Far too close.
Adrian leaned back in his chair, studying her slowly, deliberately, like he was memorizing every detail.
“Do you trust me, Lina?”
The question caught her off guard.
“No.”
The answer slipped out before she could soften it.
For a second…
“Why”
“Nothing”.
Then something dangerous flickered in his eyes.
“Honest,” he murmured. “That’s new.”
“You didn’t hire me to lie.”
“No,” he said quietly. “I didn’t.”
A pause...
Then he stood.
And suddenly, the balance of power shifted.
Because now he wasn’t behind a desk.
Now he was right there,
Towering over her.
Lina held her ground. But her heart was no longer steady.
“You’re different from the others,” Adrian said, circling her slowly.
Lina stiffened slightly.
“How?”
“You don’t look at me the way they do.”
“And how is that?”
“Like I own you.” His voice was low and close,
Too close.
Lina turned to face him directly.
“You don’t.”
Another mistake, another challenge, and this time,
He didn’t hide his reaction.
A slow, dangerous smile touched his lips.
“No,” he said softly. “Not yet.”
Her breath caught.
The words lingered between them, heavy with something she didn’t want to name.
“Why me?” Lina asked suddenly.
Adrian stilled.
“For what?”
“This job. This… attention.” Her voice sharpened slightly. “You have dozens of staff, why me?”
Silence stretched…
“Because you interest me.”
“That’s not a reason.”
“It is to me.”
Lina shook her head. “People like you don’t just ‘take interest’ in maids.”
Adrian’s gaze darkened.
“And people like you don’t belong in places like this.”
The words hit strongly, but not in the way he expected.
Because instead of shrinking, Lina stepped closer.
“You’re right,” she said quietly. “I don’t belong here.”
Something shifted again.
That same unspoken tension,
That same strange recognition.
Adrian’s expression changed just slightly.
“Say that again.”
Lina frowned. “What?”
“You don’t belong here.”
She hesitated. “I don’t belong here.”
This time, his reaction was sharper and stronger.
As if the words meant something deeper than they should.
Before Lina could process it Adrian reached out and grabbed her wrist.
Her breath caught.
Not painfully, not harshly, but firmly.
Like he needed to feel that she was real.
“Let go,” she said immediately.
But her voice wasn’t as steady as before.
Adrian didn’t,
Instead, his thumb brushed lightly against her skin.
And that small movement sent a shock through her spine,
“You don’t remember anything, do you?” he asked quietly.
Her chest tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
His grip loosened.
But he didn’t let go completely.
“Nothing,” he said after a moment,
A lie, and she could feel it.
“Don’t do that,” Lina said suddenly.
His eyes lifted, “Do what?”
“Speak in half-truths like I’m supposed to understand.” Her voice sharpened, “If you have something to say, say it.”
Adrian studied her for a long moment and said
“Careful, Lina.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re standing in front of a man who could change your entire life with a single decision.”
The air went still.
But Lina didn’t back down.
“Then do it,” she said angrily
Something in his control snapped.
Just slightly,
He stepped closer,
Too close now.
No space left between them.
“You have no idea what you’re asking for,” he said, his voice low and dangerous.
“Then explain it to me.”
“You wouldn’t believe me.”
“Try me.”
Silence plus Tension filled the whole place,
Breath mixing in the small space between them.
And then Adrian leaned in slightly,
Not touching.
But close enough that Lina felt it everywhere.
“If I told you who you really are,” he murmured, “you wouldn’t walk out of this room the same.”
Her heart pounded.
“What does that mean?”
His gaze dropped briefly to her lips.
Then back to her eyes.
“It means,” he said softly, “you were never meant to be a maid.”
The words hit deeper than she expected.
Because something inside her recognized them.
Lina pulled her hand free,
Stepping back.
Breaking whatever that moment was.
“I think you’re used to people being afraid of you,” she said, her voice quieter now, but still firm. “I’m not.”
Adrian watched her carefully.
“No,” he said. “You’re not.”
“And whatever game you’re trying to play”
“It’s not a game.”
“I’m not interested.”
Then he smiled again,
That same dangerous, knowing smile.
“You will be.”
Lina shook her head.
“No.”
“You already are.”
And the worst part?
A small, traitorous part of her wondered if he was right.
“Go,” Adrian said finally, stepping back.
The distance returned,
The tension didn’t.
Lina turned quickly and walked toward the door.
But just before she reached it…
His voice stopped her.
“Lina.”
She didn’t turn.
“Yes?” she responded with a pause
Then he said, “Stay out of the east wing.”
Her grip tightened on the door handle.
“Why?”
“Because some things are better left buried.”
That should have been enough,
That should have been a warning.
But instead,
It felt like a challenge.
Later that night, Lina stood at the bottom of the staircase, staring toward the dark hallway that led to the east wing.
Her heart beat faster.
Her mind told her to walk away,
To forget it,
To stay out of things that didn’t concern her.
But something deeper—
Something she didn’t understand,
Pulled her forward.
That same feeling from yesterday,
That same sense of familiarity, of something waiting,
Of something hers.
Lina took a slow step forward.
Then another.
Then another.
And as she crossed into the forbidden part of the mansion.
She didn’t see the shadow watching her from above.
Didn’t hear the quiet voice behind her.
“You never listen.”
Adrian.
Standing in the darkness.
Watching her walk straight toward the truth.
