: As the sun began to dip lower, painting the sky in hues of pink and gold, Sam turned toward Alex, their expression soft but serious. “If we’re going to try this—whatever ‘this’ is—you need to know it won’t be easy.” Alex nodded, his gaze steady. “I’m not expecting easy, Sam. I just want a chance.” Sam sighed, their fingers tracing invisible patterns on the bench. “You hurt me, Alex. When you left, it felt like… like I wasn’t enough for you to stay.” “You were always enough,” Alex said quickly, his voice trembling with emotion. “It wasn’t about you. It was me—I didn’t know how to deal with everything back then. I thought leaving was the only way to figure it out. But I was wrong.” Sam tilted their head, studying him for a long moment. “You say that now. But what happens when things get hard again? How do I know you won’t just run?” Alex swallowed hard, the truth of Sam’s words cutting deep. “You don’t,” he admitted. “All I can do is prove to you that I’ve changed. That I’m not the same scared kid who ran away.” For a moment, Sam didn’t respond. The soft rustling of the wind in the trees filled the silence, and Alex wondered if he’d said the wrong thing. But then Sam leaned back, exhaling slowly. “Okay,” they said finally. “Prove it.” Alex’s heart leapt at the words, though he knew this wasn’t forgiveness—not yet. It was a challenge, a chance to show Sam that he meant every word. “What does that mean, exactly?” he asked cautiously. “It means I’m willing to give you the opportunity to show me that you’re serious,” Sam replied. “But it’s on my terms. We take it slow, we set boundaries, and if I feel like I can’t trust you again…” They trailed off, their meaning clear. Alex nodded, determination flashing in his eyes. “I’ll take whatever you’re willing to give me, Sam. One step at a time.” Sam stood up, brushing off their jeans. “Good. Because this isn’t about fixing the past, Alex. It’s about building something new. And I need to see that you’re here for the long haul.” “I am,” Alex said firmly, standing beside them. Sam looked at him, their eyes searching his face. For the first time in years, there was a glimmer of something in their gaze—something fragile but real. “Let’s see where this goes,” Sam said softly, and with that, they turned toward the path leading back to town. As Alex followed, a cautious hope stirred in his chest. This wasn’t a clean slate, but it was a start. And for now, that was enough.
