Volunteer?

The community center buzzed with quiet activity. Kids played in one corner, while a group of volunteers sorted supplies at a table near the back. Alex scanned the room, his heart thudding in his chest, until his eyes landed on Sam. They were standing near a bookshelf, carefully organizing donations, their focus so intent they hadn’t noticed him walk in. For a moment, Alex hesitated, watching them work. Sam always had a quiet grace about them, a way of making even the smallest tasks feel significant. Summoning his courage, Alex stepped closer, clearing his throat gently. Sam looked up, their surprise evident before their expression quickly shifted to something more guarded. “Alex. What are you doing here?” “I didn’t mean to ambush you,” Alex said quickly. “I just… I wanted to see if you needed any help. Figured I’d try to be useful.” Sam raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical. “You decided to volunteer?” Alex rubbed the back of his neck, feeling a little foolish under their gaze. “Yeah. I thought it might be a good place to start.” For a moment, Sam said nothing, their gaze searching his face as if trying to gauge his sincerity. Finally, they sighed and handed him a box of books. “Alright. Let’s see how serious you are.” Relieved, Alex took the box and followed Sam’s lead. They worked side by side for the next hour, sorting through donations and chatting with the occasional volunteer who stopped by. The tension between them eased gradually, replaced by a tentative sense of camaraderie. “You know,” Sam said after a while, stacking a row of books on the shelf, “this place means a lot to me. I’ve been volunteering here for years now.” Alex nodded, setting down an empty box. “I can see why. It feels like… like you’re giving back to the community. It suits you.” Sam glanced at him, their expression softening slightly. “It’s more than that. It’s about being part of something bigger, helping people find a place where they feel safe.” “I get that,” Alex said quietly. “And I want to be a part of it too. If you’ll let me.” Sam didn’t respond immediately, their gaze lingering on him for a moment before they turned back to the bookshelf. “We’ll see,” they said, their tone not unkind. As they finished up for the day, Sam walked Alex to the door, their posture more relaxed than it had been earlier. “Thanks for helping out,” they said. “It was… nice having you around.” “It was nice being here,” Alex replied, his voice warm. “I meant what I said, Sam. I want to show you I’m serious.” Sam nodded, a faint smile playing at their lips. “One day at a time, Alex. Remember?” “I do,” Alex said, watching as they turned and walked back inside. As he stepped out into the crisp afternoon air, Alex felt a flicker of hope. It wasn’t a grand gesture or a sweeping reconciliation, but it was something. And for now, that was enough
