chapter 11:"* January*"

344 Words
New year in Florida means new leases, new goals, and no more “we’ll deal with it later.” *January 3, Miami* Maya and Elias got the keys to the shared studio. It was small. Brick walls. One window. A busted AC unit they named “Hurricane Junior.” Rent split 50/50. That was the rule. No one “providing” for the other. *The Pressure Test* Maya’s big client from December flaked on payment. “Budget cuts.” Elias’s team got put on a crunch project. 60-hour weeks for a month. Old pattern would’ve been: She hides the money stress. He hides the work stress. Then they snap. New pattern: Whiteboard on the studio wall. Top line: *MONEY IN / MONEY OUT / TIME IN / TIME OUT* Under it, in Maya’s gold pen: _Ask for help before you’re empty._ She told him the client ghosted. He didn’t “fix it.” He said, “Want me to look at your contract with you?” He told her he’d be gone late. She didn’t guilt him. She said, “Save me dinner. I’ll save you a couch to crash on.” *The Crack* Week 3. Elias missed their Sunday rule. Twice. Maya spent Sunday alone in the studio, staring at a blank canvas. That night she didn’t start a fight. She started a note: _I miss you. Not the boyfriend version. The partner version. Are we still that?_ She left it on his keyboard. He came home at midnight, read it, and didn’t get defensive. “I’m here,” he said. “Tired, but here. Timer?” 20 minutes. No phones. “I broke the Sunday rule because I’m scared of failing at work,” he said. “I went quiet because I’m scared of failing at us,” she said. No solution. Just truth. They ordered tacos and sat on the floor. *End of January* They didn’t “win” January. They survived it. Studio was half-painted. Budget was tight. Sleep was worse. But the whiteboard stayed up. And they did too.
