For the girl who chose herself._ Elias, 25, flew in. First time out of Nigeria. He was nervous in a rented suit, clutching a small box. He didn’t wait for photos. He found her behind the gallery. “You did it,” he said. “We did it,” she corrected. He opened the box. Not a ring. A thin gold band. Simple. “It’s not a promise to own you,” he said. “It’s a promise to keep showing up. For you. For us. For therapy. For distance when we need it. I don’t want to be your cage anymore, Maya.
