*CROWN OF CRACKS*
*Chapter 13: “March”*
March in Miami is tax season, tourists, and tests you didn’t schedule.
*March 4, Miami*
Maya was drowning in receipts. Elias was drowning in Slack pings.
The studio whiteboard had a new column: *TAXES / STRESS / TEMPTATION*
They wrote it as a joke. It became real by week 2.
*Layla Visits*
Layla flew in for 4 days. “I’m not here to chaperone,” she said, dropping her bag. “I’m here to eat and judge your studio AC.”
She judged it. Hurricane Junior lost.
But she loved the work. She watched Maya prep for a client pitch and Elias make dinner without being asked.
One night, Layla and Maya walked South Beach.
“You’re lighter,” Layla said. “Still cracked, but not leaking.”
Maya laughed. “Gold’s holding. For now.”
*The Temptation*
March 14. Jonah.
Jonah from Atlanta art school was in Miami for Art Basel prep. He texted Maya: _Heard you’re here. Coffee? Catch up?_
Old Maya would’ve hidden it. Old Elias would’ve spiraled.
Maya showed Elias the text right away. “I want to go. As friends. 45 minutes. Public place. You good?”
Elias felt the old jealousy flare. He breathed. “I’m not good. I’m scared. But I trust you. Go.”
Coffee at Panther Coffee. 42 minutes.
Jonah: “You look good. Different.”
Maya: “I am. I’m with someone. We’re working on it.”
Jonah: “Cool. Respect.”
She texted Elias when she left: _Home now. It was fine. You were right to trust me._
*After*
Elias didn’t interrogate her. He made tea.
“I wanted to ask 20 questions,” he said. “I asked one: Are you okay?”
“I am,” she said. “Because you didn’t make me choose between you and breathing.”
That night they updated the whiteboard. Under *TEMPTATION* they wrote: _Tell the truth fast. Trust is a practice, not a feeling.
