Chapter 10Axel watched George, excited about life for the first time in ages. “Then?”
“Then?” George frowned.
“Yes, we make sure we have enough food. Then what?”
George grinned. “It all depends on what risks we’re willing to take. We have kids to support.”
Axel nodded. They did, but people were starving, and he wanted to help however little he could.
“Harriet.”
Axel frowned. “What about her?”
“Next on the list is Harriet. Without Harriet, June and I don’t have jobs. We’ve always known it’s a risk to work in the same place, but we qualify for the big package by working there, and breakfast is included. If Harriet’s business doesn’t go well, things go badly for us.”
Axel nodded. Harriet was key. “Tomorrow I’ll make a note of who’s worse off, and we’ll see where it leaves us.”
