Chapter 13 Unfit

Lillian's POV Lola led the way without saying a word. I followed a few steps behind, trying to keep up despite the ache in my ankle. The deeper we walked into Arrowfang Pack, the quieter everything became. The grand buildings slowly disappeared behind us until we reached a part of the pack that looked much older than the rest. The trees were thicker here. The stone paths looked worn with age, and strange symbols had been carved into the walls of every building we passed. I had never seen anything like them before. My curiosity burned inside me. I wanted to ask Lola where we were going. I wanted to ask what the Alpha meant by conception. I wanted to ask whether the women before me had walked this same path. But every question died before reaching my lips. Some truths were far more terrifying than not knowing. Lola finally stopped in front of two enormous wooden doors decorated with silver carvings of wolves circling a full moon. She pushed them open. The room beyond looked nothing like I had expected. Half of it reminded me of an old healing temple..The other half looked like a hospital. Ancient stone pillars surrounded the room, their surfaces covered in faded symbols, while bright lamps hung from the ceiling above spotless medical equipment. Shelves filled with bottles, herbs and carefully labelled instruments lined the walls. Old traditions and modern medicine somehow existed side by side. Three people were already waiting inside. The first wore a white coat like the doctors I had seen at hospitals. The second was an elderly woman dressed in long silver robes embroidered with symbols I couldn't understand. The last woman carried herself with the calm confidence of a healer. The three of them smiled politely as I entered. "Welcome, Miss Lillian," the healer said warmly. I glanced around the room again before looking back at Lola.."What... what is this place?" Lola answered without changing her expression.."We'll be carrying out a procedure today." "A procedure?" The healer nodded reassuringly. "It will help place the Alpha's child inside your womb." I stared at her. My mind struggled to catch up with her words. "What... what kind of procedure?" "There is nothing to fear," the doctor said kindly. "It won't be painful." "And it will be over quickly," the healer added with an encouraging smile. I slowly let out the breath I hadn't realized I was holding. So….There wasn't going to be…. s*x? The normal method of conception. My cheeks warmed at the thought. The Alpha had chosen this instead. A strange feeling settled inside me. Part relief. Part disappointment in myself for ever expecting anything else. Maybe… Maybe he simply didn't find me attractive enough to touch me. The thought hurt more than I wanted to admit. Then again, why would a man like Alpha Hayes Denzel ever want a woman who looked like me? Perhaps this was better. He would never discover I was still a virgin. He would never see the stretch marks that covered my body. He would never look at me with disgust. One of the maids approached carrying a neatly folded white robe. "Please change into this." I accepted it quietly before following her into a small changing room. A few minutes later, they led me into another room. This one looked far more familiar. There was a large bed in the middle, surrounded by medical equipment I couldn't name. Surrogacy. That had to be what they meant..A small laugh almost escaped me. I'd frightened myself for nothing. The way everyone spoke about conception had made it sound like some terrifying ancient ritual. Instead… It was simply a medical procedure. The doctor helped me onto the bed while the healer gently adjusted the blanket over my legs. "We're going to give you a small injection," he explained. "It will help your body relax." I nodded nervously. The needle barely hurt. Within minutes, my body began to feel strangely light. I was awake. I could still hear everyone talking. But my arms and legs felt heavier than before. The woman in silver robes stepped forward carrying a shallow silver bowl. Inside it was the most beautiful powder I had ever seen. It shimmered softly under the light, almost like someone had crushed tiny stars into dust. She dipped her fingers into it before gently scattering the powder across my arms, my stomach and my forehead. At first… Nothing happened. I frowned. Then a faint warmth spread beneath my skin. It wasn't painful. It almost… Tickled. The warmth slowly grew stronger until it felt as though tiny sparks were dancing under my skin. I looked down. The silver powder was glowing. Before I could ask whether that was supposed to happen, I noticed the room had gone completely silent. The doctor wasn't moving. The healer stared at me without blinking. Even Lola's calm expression had disappeared. "What...?" The glow became brighter. Then, right before my eyes, the silver powder slowly began to disappear. Not fall away. Not evaporate. Disappear. It melted into my skin as though my body was drinking every last grain. The elderly woman stumbled back. "Oh... Creator." Her voice shook. "Impossible." The doctor lowered the instrument in his hand, staring at me in complete disbelief. "What is she?" The healer slowly reached for my wrist as though needing to make sure I was real. "Where did you come from?" Fear gripped my chest. I looked down at my arms. The silver was gone. Every single grain of it. "What happened?" I asked, my voice trembling. "Did... did I do something wrong?" The healer looked at me, still unable to hide her shock. "The silver dust..." She hesitated. "It shouldn't disappear." The doctor slowly shook his head. "It is meant to remain on the skin while the procedure is carried out." He looked at me as though he couldn't understand what he was seeing. "Your body absorbed it." My heart began pounding.."Is... is that bad?" No one answered immediately. The silence frightened me far more than any words could have. Finally, the healer spoke. "We've never seen this happen before." The doctor let out a slow breath."We cannot proceed.” My stomach dropped. "What?" "We don't know what this means," he admitted honestly. "Until we do, allowing you to carry the Alpha's child would be extremely dangerous." "Dangerous?" I whispered. "For us," the healer answered gently. "And..." The doctor swallowed. "...for the child." I felt the colour drain from my face. "So... I can go?" Neither of them answered. Instead, they looked toward Lola. "I'll inform the Alpha," she said before quietly leaving the room. The moment the doors closed behind her, the silence returned. I lay perfectly still on the bed, too frightened to move. A part of me prayed the Alpha would cancel everything. Another part feared what would happen if he didn't. The wait felt endless. When the doors finally opened again, Lola walked back inside as calmly as she had left. Everyone looked at her expectantly. "The Alpha has given his decision." The doctor stepped forward. "Well?" Lola's expression never changed. "He said there is no time." She paused. "We are to proceed." "No..." The word escaped my lips before I could stop it. I tried to sit up despite the heaviness spreading through my body. "You said I'm not fit for this." The doctor looked torn. "The Alpha..." "The Alpha has given his orders," Lola interrupted quietly. The healer closed her eyes for a brief moment before reaching for another syringe. "We have to continue." The doctor's shoulders slumped in defeat. "We cannot disobey the Alpha." I stared at them in disbelief. Only moments ago they had been terrified for me. Now… Fear of Alpha Hayes was greater than fear for my life. The second injection spread through my veins much faster than the first. The room slowly blurred. Voices became distant. I wanted to ask what they were doing..I wanted to move. To run. To scream. But my body no longer belonged to me. The last thing I remembered was the bright light above my head growing softer and softer until it looked like moonlight. An uneasy feeling settled deep inside my chest..It wasn't the fear of dying. It was something stranger. Something that whispered quiet ly inside me... When I opened my eyes again… I wouldn't be the same Lillian who had closed them.
