I slipped through the massive sea of humans silently. I moved to the street nearby searching for the park. I hid behind a tree making sure no humans saw me.
"Phew" I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. "First things first. Make myself invisible." I pulled my magic power from the tree, before transporting myself to the 5th dimension. I knew what places lined up with each dimension so traveling this way was faster and easier. Being in a higher dimension the humans could no longer see me. I skipped along a dirt path stopping long enough to pet a nearby rabbit. There it was the old abandoned shack, which set just 5 steps away from Finn's house.
As I approached the shack I shook my wings ready for another dimension trip. This trip seemed more difficult than normal. I brushed it off as being my energy drained from the day. Finally I made my way to the third dimension with Finn.
Feathers waiting perched on his shoulder comfortably. Her golden hair lay neatly on her shoulders always perfect.
"What happened to you?"
I looked at Feathers rather puzzled. She floated from Finn's shoulder and pulled out a mirror. My forest green hair was so tangled and disheveled. Feathers plucked a stick hidden in the mess, and adjusted my small flower crown.
"See, teamwork is dream work" I attempted to fix the mess of hair.
"You know we need to talk tonight right?" Feathers tone was difficult, at best to decipher.
I awkwardly ran my fingers through my hair."I figured as much. For now can we just celebrate?"
Feathers kept her eyes on me that entire evening. I stood barely two inches tall in fairy form in this dimension to hide myself, suddenly, I felt much shorter than that under her glare.
Finns night went smoothly. His Father tried to cook his favorite chicken. When the supper burnt, as it usual, he ordered from a nearby restaurant. He called Finn's grandparents to pick it up and smuggle the goods inside. Finn knew his dad couldn't cook, we all did for that matter. He never asked about the burnt pile in the trash. Feathers tried to teach Raziel, his father's guardian angel, how to intervene, but even that couldn't help.
As per tradition, all the photos were brought out. From the time Finn was born to current day, everything was documented in these albums. The last picture of Finn and his mom always made him cry. I even shed a tear for my blue eyed boy. He excused himself and went calmly to his room. Feathers and I shot glances towards the other. Instantly Feathers lifted me up flying me to his room. We sat on either shoulder, just stroking his hair softly. He either never felt us or just didn't question it. That is until tonight
"Who always strokes my hair when I'm upset? Is it you mom? Is it my 'Guardian Angel'?" Finn asked through small sniffles. Me and feathers sat motionless.
"Air quotes that's what I am to him?" Feathers chuckled.
"Do we answer him?" I questioned for a moment appearing to him like earlier, but then I'd have to explain everything tonight.
"Not in the way you're thinking child."
A simple wave Feathers had windchimes singing without wind. I smiled, adding the scent of fresh apple to the room.
Finn sighed, "Guess I'll never know for sure."
Finn used the bottom of his shift gray shirt to wipe his eyes. I tried to softly float a kleenex to him, but it was more awkward than helpful. Finn picked it up from the floor blowing his nose.
As he walked out Feathers eyes were on me instantly. I couldn't decide if it was in shock, disbelief, concern, or maybe anger. I didn't have to wait long to find out.
"Tiona, what is wrong with your magic?" her voice soft and melodic, with a tint of anger. It was definitely all the emotions I thought.
"Relax, it's nothing too major." I replied slowly. I can say it was not the response she wanted to hear. Her soft hazel eyes pierced my soul.
"Explain, without tricks, gimmicks, or half truth. I want a full explanation."
"You know how I went to the fairy elders." Feathers nodded listening intently. "Well, the realm is suffering. Something, or someone has plagued our realm. They have no answers and can not seem to find the root cause."
"I see. And how does this correlate with you, darling?" Her voice soft and soothing. I hated that we spent so much time together, because she knew me inside and out.
"Well, as a youngling, my powers are not as advanced as some. My time spent here has taken a toll on my studies and practices. The elders are in tune enough, they can pull magic from basically anywhere. Whereas I must use a physical living object to draw power. Honestly it gets complicated here."
"Then as the humans say, use a 'lay man's terms.' I'm listening, Tiona."
"My realm is crumbling, quickly! The lower fairies will show signs first. My magic is quickly fading. Much faster than the elders thought, I believe. I don't know how much longer my people will survive." My eyes filled with hot bitter tears, my lower lip quivering uncontrollably.
"My poor dear, that is terrible. Why do you stay and not go help your people? They need you. I can watch after Finn."
Tears trailed down my rosy, flushed cheeks. "You don't get it. I believe Finn is the answer. I can't explain how, or why. Ever since I felt his presence inside his mother's womb, I knew he was designed for our people. I need to find the link, sooner rather than later."
"Will this affect your travel for tomorrow?"
"You were always the reasonable one. I can't believe I forgot about that. I'm not sure Feathers." Fear shook through my body like a raging hurricane.
