That night I sat in my usual place, the window sill. I look over at a very satisfied, yet very tired Finn, jealous of the sleep he was able to get. He didnt know everything that I believed had predicted all along. I wasn't even completely sure he was the answer to the problem. The elders couldn't even tell me anything they could find. My realm was crumbling, and fast. My powers were draining faster than the elders anticipated. I began pacing around the window, I couldn't quiet my mind. Normally I would've taken a late night fly around, but that uses my magic.
Feathers sat on the bed post watching over Finn, and me.
"Tiona, darling, you need rest." That tone of soothing I had come to love.
"I really want to. I just." my voice cracked trailing off. The tears I had been holding back started racing down my cheeks. Feathers floated to the window sill with me. I was wrapped in soft feathers, and a warm embrace.
"It will be alright, child. Take deep breaths." I allowed the embrace and soothing voice to calm my numb brain.
I don't know how long we stayed like that. We were startled by a tap on the window from outside. Raziel must have gone out for a late night flight, and got locked out again. I turned, but it was not an angel I locked eyes with Nuala.
She was the leader of all the elder fairies. Some would consider her queen of the fae. Seldom, did she go on missions, yet alone visits to younglings such as myself. Her hair, a faded blue from years gone by, twisted neatly into a bun. Her crown was made of sticks collected from her travels woven neatly together, symbolized all the dimensions intertwine. She adorned it with gems and flowers.
I stood there in shock, before I could remember my manners. Feathers cracked the window, instantly the smell of crisp autumn apples flooded the room. Finn groaned, as we all stood motionless. He never awakened, as he turned over.
I dropped to one knee before Nuala. "Your grace." I bowed my head suddenly remembering my manners. "What brings you to this dimension?"
"Tiona, we should speak of matters most urgent. I wish I had more answers than you were given on your last travel home. I have nothing with which I can share, except that our realm is in grave trouble. I am sure you are noticing the power shift. All the younglings are having increased difficulty with simple tasks."
"Nuala, please don't make me return tonight. I want to help my people and I feel this is the right way."
"I am not asking you to return tonight, quite the contraire. I believe you. This human boy matches the description written in the prophecies of old far too well." My face turned ghostly pale, my blood cold as ice. Nuala was the one insisting I was wrong, now this?
"But why they sudden change, Your Grace?"
"I have been in council with the elders for many nights now. We have not slept, instead we have been studying the scripts. Scripts that have been locked away for such a time as this. We can not fully comprehend the amount of information written. Nor do any of us posses the power to read some of them. But all the writings have led us to consider you and this earthling child. From the description of the child, to the fairy, even the angel." Feathers looked shocked, confused, I couldn't read the expression.
"If I may interject here. How am I written in your prophecies? Angels do not interject in things revolving around the fae. That was established long before you were a youngling." Feathers stood rather boldly. Everything, and everyone was more perplexing than I could imagine.
"Feathers, the matter of the angel does not show direct assistance to the fae. The matter of protecting the earthling child is the only connection we can find between your people and ours."
"So, let me get this straight. It has taken until now for you guys to believe me. I've spent most of my life here, putting my training on hold to ensure the prophecy could be fulfilled. The entire realm thinking I'm just wasting my time and have considered me an outcast. But now that the realm is in danger you have decided I was right, because that seems fitting to your plan now. What happens if I am wrong and the prophecy cant be fulfilled?"
"Tiona, I understand that you are very upset. I would be too, in your case. I am sorry that we did not head your warnings sooner. I shall spend my last days making amends to the wrongs you have suffered. If you are wrong then we shall come up with a different plan. I do not think you are wrong. I am actually quite pleased that you could understand the prophecy as quickly as you did."
I was too stunned to speak. The leader, believed me after all the times of telling me I wasting my time. I began trembling where I knelt. Feathers wing laid on my back subtly, comfortingly. I began to weep, as feelings overwhelmed me.
"Tiona, please consider my plea. Help our people, return in the appropriate time with the earthling. Our realm, and people, need you more than we knew. Please do not hold our lack of judgement against those who are innocent. Many fae will perish. I do not wish to see the entire realm crumble because of my harsh criticism, that was incorrect all along." Nuala shed a few tears. Her voice genuine, no tricks, no gimmicks, but a queen begging for help.
"With due regard, Nuala." Feathers voice cut through the thick emotional storm. "I believe that a matter of such should be given time."
"I shall return in two nights time. Please take time to consider this. We need you."
