"Are you going to work, Aubree? Are you feeling well? Your coworkers will understand if you can't go to work for now," my mother said. We were at the table eating breakfast together, and they were surprised to see me already dressed in our uniform.
"That's right, Aubree! You might not be able to handle it!" My father said.
"Are you leaving, mama? Are you okay?" Freya asked me, even though Maynard didn't ask, I knew he would ask the same thing and they were all looking at me worriedly.
"Mama is okay, babies, but mama won't kiss you until I'm fully okay." I answered my children, I shifted my gaze to my parents who were now making their coffee. "I need to… Dad and Mom, maybe tomorrow when I get to the office, I won't have a job anymore."
"Huh? Why? For what reason? Because you were absent? Well, you were sick, so that's a valid reason why you can't go to work yet." Dad was holding back his anger.
I smiled at both of them. "Don't worry about me because I'll just show up at the company and then immediately say goodbye and go home early if I can't handle it or if I'm really feeling bad, but if I'm okay and there's not too much work to do today, maybe I'll go home later. You never know, Caloy might pick me up again." I reassured them.
"If your boss doesn't let you go home, mama, Freya will go with the twins, Grandma and Grandpa. Right… right, Grandma and Grandpa?" We just shook our heads at what Freya was saying, that kid, I don't know who she got it from… hays, she got it from me… period.
After we ate, there wasn't a minute that passed without my babies reminding me to take my medicine. I think they're my future doctors.
"Bye mama, be careful." Maynard said, since kissing and hugging were still forbidden, we just did a flying kiss.
"Come home right away, honey, just text if you can't handle the trip and I'll pick you up from work." I smiled at what Dad said.
"Thanks, Dad, I'm okay now, hopefully I'll be okay until this afternoon. I've taken my medicine. Thank you very much… Mom, I'm leaving!" I called out to Mom who was in the kitchen washing the dishes we used earlier for eating.
After I combed my shoulder-length hair, I just let it down and the last thing I did was peek at myself in the mirror going down near our living room.
I said goodbye to the kids again and left the house. Dad was outside because he was the one who hailed a taxi so I could ride to the office. I wasn't going to ride the jeep yet because the new boss might arrive before his secretary, which is me.
It's so early and I feel like my world is going to be chaotic all day. I just feel that way, but it seems like it's going to be that way.
I hurried down from the taxi after paying and thanking the driver.
"Good morning, kuya," I greeted the guard assigned for today.
"Good morning to you too, ma'am."
"Is our new boss here yet?"
"Boss? Ahh, the new CEO, right? He's not here yet, but he visited yesterday, I just don't know, ma'am, if he'll be back today because they told us that he'll be going to this building next week." Manong explained. Thank goodness I arrived first.
"Oh God! It's you!" I turned to the main entrance because of the familiar voice, it was Lanie. "He actually came in. Wow! You really don't want to get fired, do you? Are you not feverish anymore?" My friend asked.
We both walked to our office work area. Lorna and Annaliza were already there. "Aww, he came in, you're scared, yern… ayeeh… what did you talk about with our new boss? For sure you're already in love with his voice, right? He saw us talking, so Lanie suddenly gave her phone to the boss, as if he's a professor and scared to be caught because he was caught." Annaliza said, still laughing. I just shook my head because their imaginations were running wild.
If they only knew what kind of crazy things I said to our new boss, they would be embarrassed too.
"Nothing, I just said I'm coming in, so that's why I'm here in front of you, Indays." I answered.
"Are you okay? You still look pale, Aubree. You should have just taken a day off," Lorna worried.
"It's nothing… besides, it's a waste if we lose our salary, and besides I don't know what my fate will be in the hands of our new boss as a secretary. Maybe I haven't even opened the door to his office and he'll shout at me… you're fired." We both laughed at my jokes.
"Our boss seems nice, right guys?" Annaliza asked Lorna and Lanie.
"Yeah! But he's a bit strict, did you notice? He doesn't seem to smile, but he's easy to talk to," Lanie said.
We were about to gossip some more, but our supervisor arrived, so our marites session stopped and we went back to our office tables.
No one said that the new boss was coming today, the supervisor was just quiet, because when a new boss comes to the company, shouldn't there be a red carpet for a welcome, right? Maybe there isn't… I don't want to ask, what if he thinks something else.
I kept yawning, it's going to be all day, I just finished filing a document and I have nothing to do.
I looked around and almost everyone else was busy and the supervisor wasn't there, so I decided to take a nap, my head was starting to ache.
"Wake-up, sleepyhead." I was annoyed because someone was waking me up.
I slowly opened my eyes, which I regretted. My jaw clenched when I saw him again. I wasn't mistaken, the bad guy was in front of me?
