CHAPTER FIVE
EMMA'S POV
"Nathan" The man called, he was elderly, maybe in his late sixties or thereabout, his back was a little hunched and he held a stick that supported his weight. He looked very fragile, but there was no hint of fragility in his voice as he called on Nathan, it was nothing but stern. "Hey, Mr. Rutherford, what brings you here?" Nathan asked scratching the back of his neck indicating that he knew exactly why the old man was here
"Don't even start with me Nathan, when do you plan on paying your rent?" He went straight to the point and Nathan face palmed. "Can we talk about this later? I have a guest and this is very embarrassing" If Mr Rutherford's head was red in anger before, then he was spitting fire now. "I ain't talking about s**t with you, pack up your belongings and get the f**k out of my property before sundown" That being said, he turned around and left
I turned to him, and our eyes met "I'm sorry you had to see that" I simply nodded, the anger in me subsided a little and was replaced with pity, Pity that was directed to him, pretty sure it was very obvious as he shook his head "I don't want that" he said and I creased a brow "What?"
"That look of pity, I don't want it" I simply nodded again and turned away. Now I didn't know if to wait for him to gather up his stuff or just walk out on my own to face my own problems
"Let's go, I'll drive you home" his voice echoed after a few minutes of silence "You really don't have to. You can just show me the way out and I'd be fine" I said but he didn't respond and just walked out. The car engine roared, that was my cue to join him
We soon arrived at my parents home. He pulled up in the driveway and turned to me immediately. “You live here?“ Surprise painted all over his face
“Yeah I used to” I answered. He looked at the building and back at me. “Wow! That's just…just…wow!“ If confusion was a person, then it would definitely have been me at that moment “What seems to be the issue?“
“Well, if you don't know, I don't think I'm in the right position to inform you about it” I squinted my eyes suspiciously then climbed out of the car. I expected him to come along, but he simply just drove off. Weird
I climbed the front porch, taking each step with hesitancy. What if they don't want me back? What if they laugh at me?
Knock! Knock!
After a few minutes, the door creaked open and my eyes met with that of my mother's. She gaze lingered on me for a few seconds and then a smile appeared on her lips. I released a deep breath I didn't know I was holding. “Welcome home Emma. We've been expecting you" she said and my brows quirked up. That's strange. “Why? What happened?" I asked. My mom gestured for me to sit while she called for my dad
In the next three minutes we were all sat in the living room. Mom and dad together, while I was opposite them. "I don't understand. You knew about the divorce?“ I asked, they exchanged glances and mom heaved a huge sigh. "Well, we kind of orchestrated the whole thing” She revealed and my eyes grew wide
"That's... Funny” I said, expect them to laugh and say it was all a joke but they looked dead serious. "You really did” My voice was barely a faint whisper. But I couldn't understand why. I didn't know what to feel. I didn't know why my own parents would put me in such state
“Why?" I asked, tears gathering at the corners of my voice. My voice still in a whisper as I held my breath, waiting for a response. “You friend wanted to have him, so her parents paid us a million dollars to convince your husband, so we did" Dad explained and the tears fell
One million? That's all it took for them to shatter my marriage, to destroy my peace. I was their own flesh and blood and this is what they did to me?
“What did you tell Ray about me?“ They must have said some nasty things about me for Ray to have completely discarded out marriage like it was nothing. "Nothing. We just told him about Marrisa's huge inheritance that was enough to convince him” Mom shrugged
What? All of this, it felt like a nightmare. None of it was making sense. Inheritance? That was it? Marrisa was from a very rich and wealthy family, but I never knew she had eyes for Ray. And that bastard. He did this to our marriage for Money. He separated me from my son, for money
"You are disgusting. I can't believe you're my parents. How can you do this to your own daughter?“ I yelled, jumping to my feet in disgust. Wave and wave of tears trickled down my cheeks as I stared at the monsters in front of me guised as my parents
"He doesn't deserve you. He let go of your marriage because he cared more about the growth of his company, can't you see it? We actually did you favor” Mom said, taking few steps closer but I took some backwards
"We have other plans. We have someone who would love and cherish you for you and not... “ My dad was saying but I raised my palm, signaling that he stopped talking
"I don't want to hear it. You are monsters. And I hate you with everything in me” I screamed
"We have someone better for you and you will have to marry him whether you like it or not. It is for your own good Emma dear. Trust me” The urge to spit on him was there and I did not hold back. "That is disrespectful Emma. He is your father” Mom tried to scold me but I passed her a murderous glare
"The moment you said those words to me, I lost all respect I had for you two. I am a grown adult. And you cannot force me into doing anything that I do not want to do” I said and moved towards the door, their presence alone was sickening
Two huge men that I hadn't noticed were there blocked my path and shook their head
"I know you feel angry, but you have to marry him. It was part of our agreement and we need to fulfill it” Dad said. I turned to him with... What word am I looking for? Surprise? No, I was more than surprised. He was selling me off
"We have People waiting in your bedroom. They will dress you up for the wedding” He announced. Lord. I was going to explode
"Wedding?“ I screamed in utter disbelief. Wedding?
"Yes, your new husband is waiting for you in the church already. We don't want to keep him waiting so, hurry up” That said, they both walked away leaving me to process the bombshell that had just been dropped on me
How could one's life go this wrong in just a few days? I lost everything, my marriage and child, my best friend and parents, Heck! I almost lost my life. Who had I offended to be punished like this?
I tried to resist, but my strength could not match that of the two hefty men. They dragged me to my bedroom and true to their words, two women were waiting there for me. They did my makeup and hair, all the whole the man held me in place
And before I knew it, I was in front of the court, dressed in simple white dress, a flower bouquet in my hand and a tear on my face. I would never forgive my parents for doing this to me. My mom nudged me and I stepped into the court. The next thing that caught my eyes was enough to make me pass out
Nathan?
