Chapter 10: Yours Truly

“Dr. Sage…” Alpha Maximus baritone echoed as he read her name off the tag clipped to the breast pocket of her black scrub. The effect spiked the hair on the nape of her neck, her breath caught in her throat, her eyes widened, with mixed emotions shooting through her. His rough palm claimed her slender throat in a rough grasp, stroking his calloused palm against her smooth skin. It caused Sage to suck in cool air as if struggling to breathe. The tip of his fingers slipped upward, digging into her wig and caressing the lush feel of her silky hair underneath. His eyes darkened, lips curled with a nasty smirk. His thumb stroked upward, squashing her lips when she tried to protest. A man's subtle touch should make her skin crawl, make her gag with irritation, but when his forearm lay on the start of her chest, she lost it. Goosebumps crept along her skin, leaving her yearning for his strokes. He was different, and she couldn't tell why. Her mind was caving in, knees grew weaker to his yearnings. “Stop.” She managed a groan, kicking her brain into action. “Get off me!” She thrust her hand forward in an attempt to fight him off, but he snatched her small hands and pinned them above her by her wrists. Both scared and confused, her eyes roamed his huge stature. “Hmm,” Maximus murmured, running the back of his thumb along her slender neck, down to the side of her body. “Wha-what are you doing?” Her feminine tone was beginning to slip out “Finding out for myself.” He sneered, hand pegged to her body in a smooth run. With the shot of adrenaline taking charge, Sage threw her knee in a forward and upward thrust, aiming for his balls. She gasped when he grabbed his knee and jammed her into him. The impact caused the soft bud between her thighs to slam against his hard limb. He anchored her leg around himself and ran his hand down the length, dangerously close to her bum. Sage gulped dryly. ‘Why does this feel both right and wrong?’ A soft moan escaped her lips. “My golden girl,” Maximus leaned down, grazing the edges of his lips on her ear. “I could never forget that sweet symphony of your moan, even if I wanted to.” Her eyes snapped shut, letting his sultry baritone fill her soul. “Soft and soothing… Remember how you moaned that night?” He teased her. “How you screamed for a stranger and exploded under my touch?” He nibbled on her earlobe, and she drew cool air up her lungs Unexpectedly, he released her. Her eyes flew to the patient, scared that he already had a glimpse. She heaved a soft sigh when she saw him still in a coma and ducked her head down, avoiding his piercing gaze at all costs. “Meet me by the bakery in thirty.” He reached for the knob. “I'm not a patient man.” “I'm busy.” Maximus stopped and smirked. The door was slightly open, and the other health workers peeked from afar. A lover of drama, he opened it fully. “We could do it here, Dr. Sage. Suit yourself.” With that, he sauntered down the hallway. Sage shook her head, ensuring the wig was in place. She hastily adjusted her scrub and squared her shoulders. In and out, she tried to regain her masculine voice, but her delicate moans betrayed her. “Dr. Sage…” Three of her colleagues rushed in. Two were interns like her. The other was the chief. “Are you hurt?” The chief calmly asked. Sage only shook her head. Her voice was lost in the process. Right now, the only person she wanted to talk to was the stranger. She needed to sort things out and save her head. “We'll take it from her, Sage.” Dr. Ted walked in, hands dipped in his pockets. He looked angry, particularly at Maximus, for posing a threat to his patient and subordinates. She nodded and hurried out, still weak in the knees. Her first stop was at the intern's quarters, their changing room, precisely. The place was well-illuminated and spacious. She rushed to the sink, turned on the faucet, and splashed cold water on her face. ‘That was close.’ She heaved a long sigh. Ariana was silent. Over and over again, she splashed water on herself and grabbed the sink for support, leaving the water to run. Her eyes caught her reflection in the mirror. Red cheeks and puppy eyes; she looked flushed. Too flushed for someone who should be angry. ‘Eighteen minutes gone, Sage.’ She mumbled to herself. It wasn't even break time yet, and she wasn't sure whether to excuse herself or just sneak out. ‘It'll be short… Just short.’ Deciding on what to do, she closed the tap, walked back into the room, and quickly grabbed a hoodie. When she walked out, she headed for the exit. *** *** The air smelled of freshly baked bread and delicious pastries. Sage's eyes swept the place in search of the stranger. She caught him on the extreme, far away from anyone, which was quite a relief. She pulled the cap of the hoodie over her face and walked down to his table. “You have ten minutes.” He didn't bother to look at her, he just scoffed. “It's not yours to decide.” “Your time starts now.” She briskly sat in the vacant seat. Maximus kept mute, silently studying the woman before him. He was fascinated by the strength she willed in such a petite frame. “I'd hate to not be a gentleman to my lady.” He broke the silence. “You have to order something.” Their eyes locked in a fierce gaze. She was certain that he wasn't going to change his mind. She signaled to a waitress against her will. “Apple pie and cider.” Again, they returned to studying each other in silence. “Just so you know, I was drunk. I'd never settle for your kind.” He scoffed, weighing her still. “Given the way you were all over me, it's arguable.” He clicked his tongue. “Well, we agree on one thing, you're a lady.” Sage looked down when the waitress showed up with her order. Maximus waved for her to leave them alone. “Four minutes more, Mr.” She sighed. Maximus remained silent, looking from the fresh, smoky pie to her small face. He remained silent, intentionally eating away the time. She picked her hot pie and bit a small chunk. The sweet, savory taste made her hum, realizing how hungry she was. She uncorked the drink and sipped. “You're my mate.” Sage coughed, spilling the brown liquid on her body and the table. “What?” “You heard right. But what I'm confused about is why my mate would decide to be a man.” Sage choked on a laugh. “Is this some joke, Alpha Maximus?” His nose scrunched. “I'm not interested. You can go ahead and find someone befitting for that position.” Maximus cackled. “Do you think this is some appointment or surgery you can just waive?” “I just did.” “No, you didn't.” He scanned her frame. “What you did was forget to lace your shoes.” Her eyes shot down to her sagging lace. Sadly, he was right. She bent over to lace it, and Maximus retrieved the syringe from his coat pocket. “That's it, time up.” Sage pulled her chair backward, scraping the wood on the tiled floor. She picked up the cider and hungrily gulped half the contents. “I hope not to see your face again. Ever again.” He just watched her in silence, studying every slight sign he was waiting for. Just in time, she pressed her palm to her forehead and exhaled heavily as if fighting sleep. “Have a disturbed day.” She stormed out of the bakery, each step slowed down to meet her body's foreign reaction. Maximus followed behind, slowly, steadily… waiting for the clock to tick. She was now outside the bakery, and a few steps towards the gate. Her head was suddenly lightweight, and her vision blurred. She tried to steady herself on anything, but her mind was losing grip on consciousness. “What did…” Unable to get her last words out, she fell sideways, nudging against a hard mass. A firm hand slipped around her shoulder, patting her to lean in further. “Good girl.”
