Scarlett pov
I head into the cafeteria and make my way towards the line. Today they are serving cheesesteak, I look at it longingly but take a salad with ranch dressing. I also take a water. Looking at the cookies that they have, chocolate chip, double chocolate, oatmeal, and sugar. I reach out to the double chocolate but I remember what mom said and pull my hand back and take an apple instead. I pay for my food and head over to the table where all preps are. I sit next to Kelly and eat my so called lunch. The girls are talking about what they are doing this weekend. I tune them out thinking about what it be like to quit cheerleading. It would be a dream if that would happen, I tried once to quit but I was made to regret my decision and to tryout again next season. That year had been the worse, quitting cheerleading is a giant no-no according to my mom. I still have the scars to prove it. I play with my necklace as I eat my food. I look at the time, if I leave now I could sneak away from these horrible people and go be by myself. I take one more bite of this nasty food, take the apple and water and put it in my bag. I stand up, everyone looks at me. I sigh making in more dramatic than it has to be "Mrs. Smith wanted to talk to me during lunch. That old hag, I wonder what she could want."
I get the reaction that I wanted, they nod and smile. Janet, the cheerleading captain, says "practice after school today. We gotta practice the routine for the pep rally."
I nod, "I'll be there." I throw out the rest of my lunch and head out the doors. I turn toward the stairs and make my way to the door that leads outside. I walk out into the shining sun and sit under the tree to keep me cool from the sun. I look around, making sure no is around, I pull out my earbuds and I press shuffle. Brother by falling in reverse comes on. Funny how I can relate to this song. I take out my sketchbook that I keep hidden and I start drawing.
Brother why'd you have to go?
You left us all so soon
Remember that song I wrote about your family years ago?
Well they're waiting for you to come home
What do I do?
What do I say?
And dad tells me to pray, so I prayed and prayed but the hurt won't go away
The pain gets worse, it never stops
And I've asked the lord for us to swap, I beg and plead because you have kids to feed
Why, is it always stormy weather?
And brother, tell me if it all gets better
Why did you leave?
Why did you die?
You finally made your brother cry
I know you're watching over us tonight
And I hope you're watching over us tonight
I'm sorry I missed your call
I wasn't there for you at all
And now I thought it through, maybe if I answered you that you would still be here all along
Now no more calls
Can't you see, I took for granted family
And once they're gone, you'll never get that back
No more laughs, no more hugs
So hold on to the ones you love
Your soul is free, I love you Anthony
And why, is it always stormy weather?
And brother, tell me when does it get better?
Why did you leave?
Why did you die?
You finally made your brother cry
I know you're watching over from above
So hold onto the ones you love
I miss David, he's my older brother. He was always there when I needed someone to talk to. With what happened to him, my life went downhill. Dad was already on the brink of destruction after mom died, but he got over mom eventually and he remarried to the lady that I now call mom. But with what happened to David, dad couldn't take it anymore he decided that he wanted it all to end. Now I'm stuck with a lady who isn't my real mother and blames me for both David and dad. This locket is all I have left of David, he told me I was his shooting star that I could make the world shine bright. I stop drawing and open the locket, on the front of the locket was a shooting star, inside was a picture of the both of us on my sixteenth birthday. He took me to warped tour that day, I was wearing a white black veil brides shirt. My brown hair was down and wavy as it normally was, my green eyes were sparkling with happiness. Below my eye I had drawn a star in the corner of my eye. David was wearing a gray Mayday Parade shirt, his green eyes were sparkling as well. He had a pair of orange sunglasses on his light brown hair, under his eyes were black lines, the ones that football players wear. I had so much fun that day. I smiled and went back to drawing thinking about my first period class.
I was sitting in my history class when two boys came into the room. They were from the group that was laughing outside. One looked to be pretty tall maybe 5'10, he had dark blue hair that I loved, and he had blue eyes. He was wearing dark jeans with a light grey shirt. He had on grey vans and a leather jacket. The other one was taller than the guy wearing the leather jacket, maybe 5'11. He had light brown hair and green eyes, I noticed that he had snakebites. He was wearing red skinny jeans, a black shirt, and superman converse. In his hand was a Deadpool sweatshirt. The guy with the leather jacket and started walking over to a seat, I turned away from them and looked out the window.
I sit near the back right next to the windows, which is great because I get to look out whenever I'm bored with this class. I tap my fingers against the desk. Why did dad have to go and leave me with the wicked witch of the west, I hate her with everything in me. She is not a nice person, I can tell you that. My stomach growls lightly. I'm still hungry, no surprise there. Yogurt with granola isn't gonna fill a person up. I don't get why she thinks I need to lose weight if I lose anymore I might end up anorexic. I'm a hundred pounds, that isn't a lot. I sigh inwardly, I can't do anything about it. I reach into my bag and pull out the water that I tool out of my duffel bag. I take a sip and put it back in my bag. I open my notebook and look up at the board, the teacher came into the room and was writing on the board, it said to read pages 201- 206 and to do the questions on the bottom of 206. It's due at the end of class. The bell rings and the class quiets down, while everyone else is reading what the teacher wrote, I already took out my book and started reading the pages. Know what, I'm just gonna search for the answers to the questions. I started question one and that was pretty easy since I just read the first page.
As I was on the fourth question someone raised their hand, "can we work with a partner?"
"you can if you want to." the teacher replied to the student
I guess they nodded, people started moving around but I kept to myself. I felt a tap on my shoulder and looked up to see the guy in leather looking at me, "want to work together?" he asked.
I shrugged, "sure." I moved my stuff over while he went to get a chair. "so, what question you on?" I asked
"five," he said
I nodded, "I'm on four." he gave me the answer, I smiled "now I'm on five."
He smiled back. We continued with the problem and soon we were done. I looked at the clock and saw there were twenty minutes left of class. That was easy, I thought. I put my things away and grabbed his paper and mine and took it to the teacher, she looked up and smiled. I gave her both sheets and went back to my seat. The guy looked at me and smiled, "thank you."
I smiled back, "you're welcome."
He stuck his hand out, "I'm Brayden Carter."
I took his hand in mine, "Scarlett White." we shook hands, I couldn't take it anymore and I blurted out, "I love your hair!"
He laughed, "thanks." He looked at me, "can I ask a question?"
"go ahead." I smiled
"why do you hang out with the preppers? You seem different."
I frowned. But covered it with a forced smile, "I'm a cheerleading."
He didn't seem convinced, "I know we just met but if you want to talk I'm here."
I felt a tear form in my eyes, I never cry. I haven't cried since my mother died and that was fourteen years ago. I reached out and hugged him, taking him by surprise "thank you." I meant it. He hugged back. We let go, I looked at the time and saw the bell is about to ring. As I thought that it rang. I stood up and grabbed my backpack, I waved to Brayden and left the classroom
He was nice. His hair was AWESOME, I wish I could dye my hair blue. Hah! I know that won't happen. He was different, he's not like the people that I have to hang out with. I shake my head and pull my phone out of my jacket, the pink case making me want to chuck it at the school building. I groan and hit my head on the tree, I look up at the sky. Why can't my life be normal, why can't I live the life how I want it. I close my sketchbook and set it beside me, I know lunch is still going on, I left as soon as I could. I hear footsteps coming from behind me, I snap my head up and look toward where they are coming from, I thought no one was around. s**t! if I get caught by someone on the team they say something then somehow mom finds out. I know cause it happened before,
I get up and stuff everything in my bag and hide behind the tree, the opposite of where the footstep is coming. I hold my breathe and wait until they leave. Please don't let be one of the girls, please, I think. They stop by the tree, "Scarlett?" It was a guys voice. It sounds like... Brayden. I let out the breath that I was holding, I look out behind the tree and see Brayden. "Hey Brayden. What are you doing here?"
He looks at me for a couple minutes, "My friends and I come out here for lunch. Are you okay?"
I nod, "yea I'm good." I force a smile, "why you ask?"
He shakes his head but he is still looking at me, "want to come and sit with us?"
I hesitate, I want to I do. But if I get caught it's a nightmare for me, "umm I don't know." I say
"come on Red. It'll be fun." He says with a smile
Did I hear him right, did he just call me Red. I must've imagined it, "O-okay."
He smiles at me and comes over and grabs my hand, pulling me towards the group of people I saw this morning. They all look over at us. We stop and Brayden lets go of my hand, "guys this is Red. Red these are the guys!" Brayden says excitedly.
"Hi," I say
They each look at me and say hi back. Brayden sits on the ground and pulls my hand so I'm sitting on the grass next to him. I look down at the grass, I can feel their stares on my face even though I'm looking down, Brayden bumps my shoulder and I bump mine back smiling.
"so," he starts, "let me give you names to the faces."
"that would be quite helpful, dontcha think." I tease
He smiles back and claps his hands, "okay. the one with the orange tips is Ryker," Ryker had dirty blonde hair with the tips were dyed a burnt orange, and blue eyes. He was wearing a Blood on the Dance floor shirt and black skinny jeans with green converse, he also has on a few bracelets. "this is Andrew," he was the kid I saw in my history class, "lastly is Damien." He was wearing black skinny jeans that are ripped at the knees, a dark grey pierce the veil shirt, black converse, a black sweater. his hair was some of his eyes, he had on a navy blue beanie and some rubber bracelets. He looked pretty hot with his snakebites and his black hair over his grey eyes.
I looked over at Ryker and smiled, "I love your shirt."
He looked surprised but he smiled anyway, "you know Blood on the Dance floor?!" He asked excitedly.
I nodded and looked at him like he was crazy, "of course. They are my favorite. My favorite song is sexting."
"that's my favorite." He smiled.
"I can't believe you like Botdf?" Andrew said.
"Whatcha mean?" I c****d my head to the side.
Damien spoke up, "well because your a prepper and preppers don't like that kind of music."
I looked at him, he's right. Preps don't but I do. I glared at him, "well I do."
Before he could speak the bell rung signaling that lunch is over. I grabbed my ugly bag and made my way inside.
