The Come Up

"Can you ever not get hair all over the soap Raquel, damn." Mario said from on the other side of the shower curtain.  "First of all, I don't use soap bars, I use body wash and that's your hair. My hair has highlights." Raquel replied shutting him up as she quickly brushed her hair into a ponytail, rushing to work. This was what she did everyday. Woke up too early and fell back asleep, only to have to wake up again, but too late the second time. She never ate and rushed into work to do a little bit of everything. Eager to be as far away from Mario as possible. Raquel looked into the mirror, fatigued by her ritual called life, as she tried to make the best of it everyday. "Why you gotta go to work so early anyway. You were supposed to be off today because you had to prep for my Family's dinner tonight." Mario said in a snappy tone.  Raquel did a wide-eyed exhale, remembering only now that she had actually agreed to go to that. "You forgot didn't you." He asked, dully. "I did." She sighed. "-But, I'll just order a cake and say I made it okay, i have to go in today my boss is expecting me it's been busy lately." "Raqi, you work at a call center, how the f**k is it that busy? You can't bring a Dairy Queen cake to the my Mom's house. She's Hispanic. She'll never forgive you." He said turning off the water, peeping out of the curtain.  Raquel tossed all her accoutrements, into her purse and turned to him. "What does that even mean you asshole? Well then you f*****g make it Mario. I'm tired of your Mom beating down on me. Especially with all the s**t you put me through that I don't go running to her to talk about. Good bye." She said, walking out of the bathroom as he called out to her.  Raquel drove through traffic listening to the radio. Her phone began to ring and and she looked at the screen for a brief second, before ignoring it. It rang again and she picked up this time frustrated. "What do you want Mia. I'm on my way in, I'm literally outside."  "Damn hello to you too. Vanessa is already acting like a b***h this morning, because you're late. I covered for you thought. What's wrong?"  Mia asked. "Girl nothing, just the stupid credit union where I borrowed the money from to cover the fees and interest on the  late mortgage payments is calling me. I don't have enough money to make the payments on that let alone the house.."  She sighed, as she pulled into the parking lot.  "Why did you even do that Raqi?I told you you could ask me. How did your Only Fans do last month, didn't you make any money off that atleast? What about Mario's stupid ass, you know everybody know his daddy sell white." Mia replied, shuffling the papers around on her desk to make it seem like she was working.  Raquel sighed clicking the alarm on her car. "Girl my only fans is barely out there. I made like 500 dollars and you know I don't like to ask nobody for help when it comes to money for things I'm responsible for. Also can you stop saying that about Mario's daddy." She said hanging up the phone walking inside right behind of Mia.  "His dad money ain't got s**t to do with me Mia, and I've honestly had it with Mario. I don't even know what I like about him anymore all he does is get on my damn nerves. I can't remember the last time i enjoyed f*****g him, I legit hate his ass most times." Mia frowned gently rubbing Raquel's shoulder. "You already know how I feel about y'all relationship and him, so I won't rub salt in the wound. How's your dad today?" Mia asked referring to the fact that Raquel's Father suffered a stroke a few months ago and is slowly recovering at home. "He's okay, I called him and mom when I woke up. He's talking now but you know if my mother doesn't do anything else she'll remind me of the bills she has due and which purse she wants next week, as if i'm the freaking lotto." Raquel chuckled dryly."She's getting Daddy's disability checks every month and I can't wait to get my hands on his retirement check in a few months, so it can take the stress off of me. I'm not a bank." "Oh my God, what's with that about them. My mom keeps texting me shoes that she wants too, like excuse me are you forgetting I owe thousands in student loans?" Mia laughed, picking up her desk phone. "Guess who asked for you this morning again?" Mia teased.  Raquel rolled her eyes, finally putting on her headpiece, logging into her computer.  "That fine guy from the league. Baby, if you don't want him I'll gladly take him off your hands." Mia mumbled, gliding her tongue over her lips. "You don't even know if he's really in the league Mia. He's a f*****g creep. What man says out of no where while he's on a service provider help center line, that he's in the NFL and calls as often as he does?" Raquel asked. "I don't know.... a rich one helloooo!" She exclaimed, while laughing.  "No. A man that is either pretending or is accustomed to buying p***y with that "I'm in the LA training" bullshit." Raquel said jeering him. "You can say what you want Raq, but he's calling here almost every week to talk to you about nothing. I don't know about you but that's effort, and because I don't put up with bare minimum acts of romance, communication and love I'd say it's a hell of a lot.  Raquel bit her lip, thinking bout her own situation with Mario and how everything he did for her lacked effort. She cleared her throat awkwardly trying to remember the last time he really went out of his way to surprise her or do something thoughtful. She shuddered at the thought of not being able to think of any. Later that evening, Raquel dreaded even going to Mario's family party. They had been together for 3 years and he often hardly spoke to her when he was with his family and friends. "Hi everyone, sorry I'm late." She entered the backyard, slightly moving her hair out of her face. She received some friendly stares among the usually glares as she kissed his father on the cheek.  "They're working you too hard over there." He smiled exhaling smoke from his cigar.  "I wish I could say they weren't." She smiled holding Mario's little sister's hand.  "Hi honey, where is Mario?" Raquel asked her, dismayed by the fact he hadn't even called her for the day, not even after the dusk set in. Something a loving boyfriend wouldn't do. "I don't know. I think he was with Lilyana." She said shortly, before running away to play along with the other children.  Raquel shrugged the uncomfortable feeling, heading into the kitchen. "Hi Mariella, I didn't get to make the cake again. I was so busy at work." Raquel tried to apologize, sitting down at the island close to his cousins. "That's okay Raquel, we all know how much your work is so important to you." Mariella replied sarcastically, instigating between her and  Raquel. "I really didn't have time, I have so much different things going on with my own family and Mario only told me three days ago." She retorted. "Of course, you would blame him. This is all nothing new." She smirked. "How about you help hand out these drinks?" Mariella said handing Raquel a tray of red party cups.  Raquel was internally angry and hurt but she wouldn't allow them to see that. She felt bullied and thought his other especially never even asked about her Father's recovery and always held Raquel overly accountable for things beyond her control while not doing the same for Mario, they're own child. Raquel took the tray and made her rounds through the get-together. Dave, Mario's brother acknowledged her as he walked by but not how he usually would. It was cold and sharp and Raquel felt the undeserved tension. He marched into the kitchen and Raquel ignored the feeling once again, walking through the back yard where she saw Mario, hugged up with the same Lilyana. "Mario what the f**k?" She said speedily walking over to them as he quickly pushed Lilyana off of his lap covering his head with his hands as Raquel forgot about the beverages and beat him with the tray.  "Babe stop, she's my cousin, I didn't even know you were here!" He said, blocking the blows. "You're cousin! On your f*****g lap!" She yelled, dropping the tray all together full on hitting him with her fists. The music stopped and everyone gathered, staring at the chaotic interaction as Lilyana, made her way to the other side of the backyard. "What the f**k is wrong with you!"  Raquel shouted as some of Mario's family held her arms, pulling her off of him.  "So you all are okay with incest?" Raquel panted in anger pulling away from them. "Raquel you need to calm down, and stop acting like a little drama queen in my house." Mario's mother Marielle said throwing her hand towel over her shoulder.  "So now it's me right? When he's in the corner flirting with some b***h on his lap. Are you serious?"  "Yeah, come on Marielle. That boy is dead wrong, what the hell is wrong with you?" Mario's Father, Calvin said pointing his cigar at her.  "No--no. She's accusing my son of  incest and cheating Calvin, when she's the w***e and weirdo." Marielle responded, c*****g her head towards Raquel.  Raquel stuttered, confused and lost for words where this sudden attack was coming from. She knew she wasn't her hypothetical Mother-In-Law's favorite, but she didn't realize it was that deep. "I'm a w***e and a weirdo now?" Raquel asked in disbelief.  "Yes, Dave just showed me your little bikini and feet pictures for sale on what is it, Only  Fans. What kind of woman sells her body besides a prostitute?"  Mario's ears perked up when he heard what his mother had said, enraged. "Hold up...Only Fans? Since when you start doing that?"  Raquel was completely confused how Dave knew it was her because she never posted her face and her account wasn't even old or popular. She was a newbie. "My friends encouraged me to make it because I needed the money to pay for my parents mortgage and I don't feel bad about it. I haven't even posted anything illicit or explicit. You don't even help to pay for anything significant in our apartment Mario, have you told your parents that? That you live, sleep and eat off of me for free? The only thing you pay is to put gas in my car when you want to use it." Raquel chuckled. Though she was angry inside she realized then and there that she was carrying the whole relationship financially and emotionally on her back and she was being chastised for having feelings like a human being should. "You know what, f**k you Marielle and f**k you too Mario. Imagine you're judging me and calling me weird but your not even 18 year old son is searching on Only fans in general for feet pics but he's not weird right? Or your other son Mario isn't weird and a dog for being caught cheating. I don't need this and I don't need you Mario. Don't even come back to my house, I'll mail your s**t!"  Raquel grabbed her purse and headed to her car. She closed he door and cried. She wasn't even mad about the relationship ending she was mad about always having to be the one left with the shitty end of the stick. Here she was trying her best to keep it all together for her family only to be beat down by someone who says they love her and has her back only for him to lie in her face and not defend her. She drove over to Mia's house where she found that J'vee was there also. "Do we have permission to tell you how really feel about that fool?" J'vee asked, passing the bottle of vodka. "Sure." Raquel said.  "I'm so glad you're through with him. He's not even worth it. Why do us women put our selves through that? This is why I only f**k niggas with money." She said and Raquel wrinkled her brows wondering how she made it sound so simple. "b***h really?" Raquel sucked her teeth, rolling over on the couch. "No, and when I say this I'm a slut but when you say it you're inspirational." Mia said dumbfounded. "I'm serious y'all. If you want nice things you either sacrifice and work for it he old fashioned way get a degree, start a business , work non-stop like y'all do or you can be like me and make these niggas pay for the lifestyle you want." J'vee said boldly, lifting and dropping her shoulders in all seriousness. "So you're telling me that you're p***y is worth diamonds and a Benz truck?" Raquel asked jokingly.  J'vee stood up, resting her glass on the table taken a back. "So you're telling me that yours isn't?" She said smartly. "No offense Raqi but you too bad of a b***h not to understand what I'm saying. I'm not saying that I sell my body or have s*x for money of course not. I'm saying that I know my worth, and If a man wants to spend a couple bands, fly me out and cashapp me every week just to get a whiff of this you think I'm going to stop him?" She scoffed, with her hand on her hip.  "So they don't realize that you're using them eventually and stop. Or get aggressive? or emotionally?" Mia asked, genuinely interested. J"vee shrugged. " I mean it comes with the territory, but I have rules. I never take pictures with them, I never see one more than once a week, never f**k them without a rubber or birth control and I don't get to personal."  Raquel sat up, turning her attention to J'vee. "So how do you meet them and how do you not catch feelings?" J'vee sat down across from her and smiled. "It first started on i********:, like ballers in my direct messages, i never hit them back and I teased them. I hated my job so I started rolling with a lot of the socialite crowds just to be in the same place as them. I never chase, they chase me but I'm always in a position to be chased. Y'all have to understand men what things they can't have or know they shouldn't have."  Mia frowned, interrupting her. "J'vee please don't tell me none of them are married..."She groaned.  J'vee bit her lip. "Of course not. That happened a long time ago and I paid for it trust me.I fell in love with him and he fell in love with me and he wouldn't leave his wife. So I never crossed that line again so you don't have to worry about that. The point is you have to be in the right circles, be super confident and make it clear what you want from them and the requirements of whatever it is y'all gonna be doing. it has to be on your terms, or he's just gonna try to control you and treat you like the next b***h and you definitely don't want that." She said folding her leg beneath her, running her fingers through her hair. "Well at least you're honest." Mia said lifting her glass to her. "Teach me your ways. I want a Benz truck too." She giggled resting her head on Raquel's shoulder. "I honestly don;t think you guys could handle it. You guys are too emotional, you let love cloud your judgement too often. I'm real, I know men's weaknesses and I play off them. Y'all be in love with men that break your hearts, cheat on you , no offense Raqi, abuse you in every way possible and cant pay for s**t. I mean if I'm gonna cry I rather cry in my house with my bills paid off and wipe my tears with a Burberry handkerchief damn." J'vee said relentlessly. "That is so materialistic J'vee. I' not saying it's wrong but I'm not condoning it either." Raquel mumbled. "I rather be materialistic than broke, heartbroken and bitter. I'm paid and I can help you if you get out of your feelings and get into your bag baby. We've been friends for over 13 years so I think I have the right to try and help you Raqi, you won't take money from me. That's the least I could do." J'vee said.  "Raqi has a guy that calls her all the freaking time saying he's in the NFL at work. Trust me we can handle it." Mia incited.  "I've been trying to find a way to bring this up to you but you too need to take that Only Fans s**t serious and you guys need to come to this brunch this celebrity DJ is having this Saturday. There's gonna be a lot of famous people there, lots of clout good to begin with. in the meanwhile, I just shared your Only Fans link on my page. I gotta go."  "What?" Raquel asked terrified. "You have like a million followers. "b***h do you wanna make money or not, now good night, I'll see you guys on Saturday." J'vee said slipping her sunglasses unto he top of her head, kissing both of them on the cheek good bye.
