### Chapter 9: The First Threat
The atmosphere in Barcelona was charged with tension, a palpable sense of danger that hung in the air. Khushi felt it as she went about her day, her thoughts constantly drifting back to Alessandro and the storm brewing around them.
One evening, while she was out with friends, she received a phone call from an unknown number. Hesitant, she answered it.
“Is this Khushi?” a deep voice asked.
“Yes, who is this?” she replied, a knot forming in her stomach.
“Stay away from Alessandro,” the voice warned, cold and menacing. “He’s playing a dangerous game, and you don’t want to get hurt.”
Khushi’s heart raced. “Who are you?”
“You don’t need to know. Just take my advice and walk away while you still can.”
Before she could respond, the line went dead. She felt a chill run down her spine, panic washing over her. The warning felt real, and the threat was unmistakable.
Shaken, Khushi rushed to find Alessandro, her mind racing with fear. She found him at a local café, deep in conversation with one of his associates. As she approached, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
“Alessandro!” she called, her voice urgent.
He looked up, concern flooding his expression as he saw her pale face. “What’s wrong?”
“I just got a call,” she said, her voice trembling. “Someone warned me to stay away from you.”
Alessandro’s expression hardened. “What did they say?”
“That I’m in danger because of you,” she replied, her voice shaking. “They told me to walk away.”
His jaw clenched, and he stood up, the protectiveness in his demeanor palpable. “You’re not walking away. I won’t let that happen.”
“Alessandro, this is serious,” Khushi insisted. “I don’t want to be a target.”
“I’ll handle it,” he said, his voice firm but filled with worry. “You need to trust me.”
“But what if they come after you?” she asked, fear creeping into her heart. “What if they hurt you because of me?”
He reached for her hand, squeezing it tightly. “I won’t let anything happen to you. I promise.”
As the weight of his words settled between them, Khushi felt a mix of fear and determination. They were in this together, and she wasn’t going to back down.
That night, as they walked along the beach, Khushi felt the weight of uncertainty pressing down on her. The warning replayed in her mind, a constant reminder of the danger that loomed over them.
“Do you think they’ll come after us?” she asked, glancing at Alessandro.
“I don’t know,” he admitted, his gaze scanning the horizon. “But I won’t let them. I’ll do whatever it takes to protect you.”
Khushi’s heart swelled with affection, but the fear lingered. She knew they were stepping into a world filled with shadows, and the stakes were higher than ever.
