Bass

COLIN's POV "SHE GOT TO STOP sneering at me," I heard David spoke these words to me in the midst of the booze and rowdy chatters of my bandmates as he sat, smoking a Winston red beside my seat. We were now in the heavy hour of our drunken minds and hazy laughter. Wayne already went home hours ago. I sat up, suddenly distracted by David's words as they slowly registered to me and I faced him with a confused frown on my face, wondering who he was referring to. "Don't tell me you don't know," he said when he met my stare. His voice was spoken so softly as to not be heard by our friends. I shook my head at him, completely puzzled about what he's talking about. "Your bass," he said in a whisper. Sam? As if on cue, Samantha showed up and returned to our table after excusing herself to the comfort room a while ago and I frowned harder at seeing her presence. The rest of the gang stopped talking when she suddenly grabbed her guitar case and the backpack she brought with her to our gig. "I have to go now," she said to us, "I need to get home before midnight." She'd always been the first one to leave whenever we rehearsed and go out at night. And for the first time since I have met her, I took notice of her wary expression as she gave me and David a sidelong glance. I felt David tugging the hem of my shirt under the table and I soon realized I had been frowning at her and straightened up to give Sam a smile. "You always go home too early, Sam," Eric interjected as he groggily shook the bottle of vodka to her. "One more shot before you leave then." Sam laughed at him and gracefully raised the shot glass filled with liquor from our table and quickly downed it in one gulp. "Happy?" She raised a brow to Eric. Eric and Steve finally let her go but not after they incessantly repeated their demands that she had to take a cab instead of walking alone in the dark streets. She just nodded to them, brushing their words off with a laugh, and I knew she wasn't really going to do what she was told to. She soon stepped away and gave me a wave with David smiling back at her. I then took it as my cue to stand up and decided to escort her out of the bar. She turned her raised brow at me and I just shrugged. I silently looked at David, asking for permission and he just smiled at me, nodding. "Get home safely," David just said before Sam and I went away. "Why are you walking with me now?" She asked me as we maneuvered our way through the crowded floor of the bar. I ignored her and instead, quietly led her towards the big steel doors of the place. The moment we got outside, I stopped and turned to look at her. "What?" She asked me again with a puzzled look. "You're not going to take a cab, are you?" I said, knowing very well that this girl will never do since she used to think too highly of her strength to even doubt the possible harm of walking alone in these dangerous streets at night. "It's not that far, anyway," she answered, proving my thoughts. "You've got to be kidding me," I mumbled, roused with sudden parental protectiveness. I walked across the sidewalk and raised my hand to hail a cab. Not long after, a taxi stopped right in front of us. "Wait," I heard Sam calling out behind me, "I'm not going to take that." I turned as I opened the door on the backseat and glared at her, "I'm paying it so get inside." She just glared back at me. "Sam," I warned her, "I'm serious. It's f*****g quarter to twelve. I ain't gonna let you stroll the streets alone and drunk." "I'm not drunk," she defiantly objected and as to prove her point, she walked and spoke to the driver through the opened car door. "I'm sorry, I'm not riding." I didn't close the door despite her rejection and instead, I grabbed her arm and pushed her down with a little force to get her settled inside the car. I ignored her protests and closed the door on her, drowning out her anger at me then I opened the door of the passenger seat to talk to the driver. "Three blocks down then a turn until the first street sign," I said to the man behind the wheel who just looked at me with a confused expression. I pulled out some cash from my pocket and handed him the money. "What the hell, Colin?!" Sam shouted at me from where she sat. I turned to give her an angry scowl which somehow made her stop as she looked at me with a frustrated glower. "Behave and get home safe," I told her, putting out an authoritative air so that she would know I meant it seriously. "Send me a message once you get there." She seemed to take my words and just scowled deeper as she crossed her arms against her chest and looked away. I gave the driver a nod before I closed the door of the car and stepped back to let them leave. How troublesome... Since when did she start walking home alone this late at night? Has she been doing this all this time? "I've got to admit," I heard David's voice behind and I turned to find him standing just by the entryway of the club, smirking at me. "That was hilarious. Didn't think you got a fatherly touch in you." "Can you believe that woman?" I ranted back to David, "I swear from now on she won't ever walk home again after rehearsals." David just snorted at my words and handed me a cigarette to ease my tension. I took it and immediately lit the stick as I swiftly inhaled the nicotine with relief. "Gotta warn you," I heard him telling me as I leaned my back against the wall by the entryway. "The girl's crush on you might get worse if you start getting too attached." I smirked at his statement and instead pulled David to my arms and kissed him with ardent passion. "Jealousy isn't your thing, Dave." I teased him as he smiled back at me. "Whatever," he replied. "I got great news though." I pulled away and stared down at those sparkling blue eyes and asked, "How great?" "So great that I have been offered to be featured in an upcoming issue of a very glamorous magazine next month." "Says who?" I grinned at his adorable smiling face and leaned down again to kiss the side of that delicious curve on his lips. "Says the guy who will photograph the whole thing." "A guy, huh?" That somehow sparked a possessive note from me. "Yeah. A bigshot photographer," Dave wriggled his brows, obviously testing my jealous side again. I wrapped my arm around his waist and firmly held him against my chest as a response. "Is he handsome?" I took his bait, smirking. David laughed at my question and just leaned in for another kiss. I let myself get drowned in his taste as I returned the pleasure with equal delight. I even noticed a few onlookers giving us glances as they walked on the sidewalk. I smirked and just ignored them as David landed another peck on me. "Not as handsome as you," he then replied, making me grin wider. "Good," I responded back, still smirking, "I'm the only handsome guy you'll ever really need anyway." He laughed at my words but we both knew it was true. "I guess you are," he said back, chuckling. And because he just felt like it, he kissed me again with so much greed not caring about the rest of the world watching us on that foggy sidewalk in the middle of the street. Besides, a short public kiss is never really a crime. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
