The air felt wrong.
It was a scent. A bitter tang of blood mixed with the sharp, metallic taste of fear hanging heavy in the air. The night had descended, and with it came the shadow of something worse than the vampires that had just tried to tear them apart. Something deeper, more dangerous.
Adrian moved quickly through the streets, his eyes scanning the darkness as Kai clung to his side. Kai's hand was warm against his, but his pulse… it was frenzied. A mix of fear, adrenaline, and something even worse guilt.
He looked over at Kai, his brow furrowing as the smaller man stumbled beside him. "You alright?"
Kai's lips pressed tight, but his voice trembled. "I didn't expect it to feel like this. Like… like they had me, Adrian. Like I was already dead before you even got to me."
