The Voice

It’s been a few months and no one has seen or heard from Brian. Able sent out a search party but returned empty handed. Well, that was what we were told anyway. The bodies were moved to a location 5 miles west of the estate. With the help of Sally, she used a spell that hides any evidence that could track back to Brian or the estate. There is an ongoing investigation and it’s been all over the news for weeks. I’ve become closed off from everything since the day my memories were returned to me. So much has happened in a short amount of time. I’m overwhelmed. I don’t know who or what to believe. I wonder if this is all but a dream and I have yet to awake.  School is the only thing that has remained consistent in my life. That being said, when I returned to homeroom on Monday, I was greeted with an empty seat. The days in school were long and boring.  I casually walked through the halls on the way to Geometry.  “So, my parents decided to enroll me into a taekwondo class. Can you believe it?” Cali suddenly appeared next to me.  “They don’t believe I have enough power to take down my enemies!” Cali whined.  “A quick pull of the hair and a punch to the stomach. Give me a few boxes of nerds and watch me unleash the beast! Speaking of nerds! You owe me BIG TIME!” Cali said, sticking out her hand demanding her payment.  “You’re right. I never got your box of nerds. I’ll buy it on the way home from school.”  Cali shook her head.  “I’m charging interest as well. You now owe me 3 boxes!” “Ok, fine.”  We arrived at class and took our seats.  “Good morning everyone. I hope you all had a good weekend” Ms. Carter said.  “Please open up your books to page 32.”     Ms. Carter was an older lady that has taught at the school since the beginning. I dreaded this class. Her teaching methods were horrible. Half the time I wanted to jump out the window when I was up at the whiteboard in front of the entire class. If you were struggling with a problem she would just leave you there!  “I’m sure everyone has heard about the Pythagorean theorem at some point.” She said taking the dry eraser and drawing on the board.  The class groaned. She drew a triangle on the board going into detail about the formula and how to use it. The class was so boring. Most of the students were not even paying attention. Some were on their phones or sleeping.      The class moved at a turtle’s pace but the bell finally rang signaling class change. Language Arts wasn’t as boring as Math but it didn’t go by any faster. Mrs. Bates was explaining the Latin and Greek roots. I was bored. My thoughts kept going to Brian. Wondering if he was ok.  “…Ashlyn…” I felt a whisper of cold air in my ear. I jumped, startled, looking around.  No one was there.  Cali tilted her head giving me a funny look. I shrugged.  “We have finished earlier than expected. You are dismissed. Now get out.” She demanded. All the students grabbed their books and darted out of the room. A bonus: getting out a few minutes early before lunch. Cali and I met up at the entrance to the cafeteria.  “Should we sit outside today?” She asked.  I nodded.      Five tables were spread out on the concrete overlooking the nearby dog park. We usually sit inside where the air condition was because of the heat but the weather was changing. It was nearly fall.  “So, was everything ok in Language Arts?” Cali said, taking a seat across from me.  “Yeah” I said half heartedly.  “Well, I can’t help you unless you tell me!” She exclaimed.  “I heard...whispering.”  “Whispering? What did it say?” “Ashlyn.”  “Anything else?”  “Nope.” “There is still so much we don’t know about you. Heck, there is a lot to learn about this whole situation! For all we know, this all could be a lie too. A few months ago we didn’t even believe in anything supernatural let alone vampires...now we’re surrounded by them! Your past, who you are and your connection to a realm that we only heard in a bedtime story. I think we should investigate!`` I nodded. Cali was right. Two truths and a lie, all lies or all truths we are on uncharted grounds. We have a better chance of investigating together.”  “Ok Nancy, so where do we start?” I asked curious.  “Tomorrow you and I are going on a little adventure.” Cali said, smirking. The rest of the day went by at an even pace. The voices of the students echoed in the hallway as the school day came to an end. I was organizing my locker like I usually do after a few months.  “Looks like this school was beneath him after all.” That voice could only be from one person.  Megan.  She pressed her body against the locker next to mine, twirling her hair.  “I’ll find him eventually.” She reached for the front of my locker, ripping off a piece of paper and tearing it in half.  “It’s not like you ever go anyway.” The two halves floated to the ground as she walked away.  I looked down at the torn paper on the ground.  “Halloween Bash”  When: October 31st Where: Gym  Time: 8:00-11:30pm Come in your best Halloween outfit!
