Chapter 7: The Moon's Judgment

856 Words
The moment Aria crossed the ancient stone archway, the world around her disappeared. The cheering voices of the council... The reassuring presence of Kael... Even the cold wind that swept across the sacred mountain vanished. She found herself standing in endless white mist. There was no sky. No ground. Only silence. A soft feminine voice echoed through the emptiness. "Welcome, child of the Moon." Aria slowly turned in every direction. "Who's there?" No answer came. Instead, silver light gathered before her, forming the outline of a woman dressed in flowing robes that shimmered like moonlight. Her face remained hidden behind the brilliant glow. Aria instinctively lowered her head. "The Moon Goddess?" The figure smiled gently. "I am only her messenger." "Your first trial has begun." The mist around Aria shifted. Suddenly she was no longer alone. She stood inside the old Silver Moon Pack. The familiar houses. The training field. The packhouse where she had grown up. Her heart tightened. "This... isn't real." The messenger's voice echoed again. "Everything you see is born from your heart." Across the courtyard stood Damian. He smiled at her exactly as he had before the rejection. He held out his hand. "Aria." "I made a mistake." "Come home." For one brief moment, Aria felt the ache in her chest return. The pain. The humiliation. The longing she had tried so hard to bury. Damian walked closer. "I never stopped loving you." "I was forced to reject you." "We can start over." Tears formed in Aria's eyes. Part of her wanted to believe him. But another part remembered every cruel word. Every laugh from the crowd. Every lonely tear she had cried that night. The messenger spoke once more. "What does your heart desire?" Aria closed her eyes. When she opened them again, her gaze was steady. "I don't want the past." Damian looked shocked. "Aria..." She shook her head. "The girl who begged for your love no longer exists." "You rejected her." "I survived without you." As soon as the words left her lips, Damian's image shattered into countless pieces of silver light. The illusion was gone. The mist returned. The messenger nodded. "You have released your past." "But the second test awaits." Dark clouds gathered overhead. The ground beneath Aria trembled violently. From the shadows emerged dozens of rogues. They surrounded a frightened little girl. Aria froze. It was herself. Only six years old. The same frightened child who had watched her kingdom burn. The little girl cried helplessly. "Please..." "Someone save me." Without thinking, Aria ran toward her. The rogues attacked immediately. Although she carried no sword, she threw herself between them and the child. "If you want her..." "You'll have to go through me." The leader laughed. "You can't protect anyone." "You couldn't even protect yourself." A claw slashed toward her. Aria refused to move. She spread her arms, shielding the little girl. "I won't abandon her." Not again. The claw stopped inches from her face. Everything became still. The rogues faded into mist. The frightened child smiled. "You finally came back for me." She reached out and hugged Aria tightly. A warm silver light surrounded them both. The child slowly dissolved into glowing particles that flowed into Aria's chest. The messenger's voice became stronger. "The greatest wound was never your rejection." "It was the child inside you who believed she was unworthy." "Today... you healed her." The entire world shook. The white mist vanished. Aria found herself standing before an enormous silver gate decorated with ancient wolf carvings. At its center was the symbol of a crescent moon. The gate slowly opened. On the other side stood a magnificent throne bathed in moonlight. Above it floated a beautiful silver crown. It radiated warmth instead of power. The messenger stepped beside the throne. "Few have reached this place." "The Moon does not choose the strongest." "It chooses those whose hearts remain pure despite suffering." Aria slowly walked forward. Every step made the crown shine brighter. Just before she reached it, the messenger raised a hand. "One final question." "If you become Queen..." "Will you seek revenge..." "...or will you protect even those who once hurt you?" Aria fell silent. She remembered Damian. She remembered Selena. She remembered every insult and every betrayal. Then she remembered Kael. Cedric. The people who had welcomed her without asking for anything in return. She smiled softly. "I won't live for revenge." "I'll live to protect those who cannot protect themselves." The messenger smiled. For the first time, her face became visible. She looked almost identical to the statues of the Moon Goddess scattered throughout the kingdom. "Then the Moon has made its choice." The silver crown floated gently toward Aria. As it descended toward her head, a brilliant light erupted across the sacred realm. Outside the trial chamber, Kael suddenly looked toward the sky. The full moon blazed brighter than anyone had seen in centuries. Lord Magnus stared in disbelief. "The Moon... it's answering her." The elders dropped to one knee. No one spoke. They all understood what it meant. The Lost Queen had passed the first judgment. To Be Continued...
