An act of kindness

Mason Knight POV "I wish you had just died in the crash!" Her voice was hoarse and full of sorrow. I knew Skylar hated me, but not this much. I hated her too, but it was mainly because of her judgmental attitude and that singular act she committed in middle school. Why would a nobody, a scholarship kid who couldn't even afford to take the bus, make the principal suspend a golden heir like me for two weeks? Those two weeks were the most torturous moments of my life. Dad cut off my allowance and froze my savings account. He even made me work in a tiny shop for a whole week. All because of Skylar's stupid self-righteous attitude. Everybody cheated in exams. I wasn't the first. But the one time I did, she reported me to Mrs. Aminat, and I ended up facing the school board. Principal Gittens would have let me go. He respected Daddy too much to suspend his precious son. But Dad insisted I face the punishment and serve the suspension. He claimed it would teach me a lesson and ensure that I never cheated in an exam again. ............ Ever since then, I've been bullying Skylar. Yet every day she got back on her feet and looked down on us as if we were beneath her. She literally said that without my mother spoiling me with gifts and billionaire privileges, I was nothing. I hated her guts and vowed to make her pay for those torturous weeks. ............ several years since then, and my grudge against her has died down over the years. Still, I never missed an opportunity to make her life miserable at Westminster Prep Academy. But her words tonight broke something inside me. She saved my life, yet she said such horrible things to me. ............ Then she stormed out of the hospital, leaving me confused. "What the hell happened to her?" I asked the doctor as the nurses watched the drama between Skylar and me. "Try to calm down, sir," the nurse replied respectfully. I guessed they had either googled me or already knew I was some rich heir. "Her father suffered a stroke months ago. Unfortunately, his condition has become serious. The stroke affected a part of his brain, and because of that he's been having repeated seizures." She paused, allowing the information to sink in. "The doctors have been doing everything possible to control the situation, but the continuous seizures are putting a lot of pressure on his brain, which could cause permanent damage. An emergency operation is needed to give him a shot at survival." The nurse then shook her head and attempted to walk away, but I grabbed her arm. "If an operation is needed, then f*****g do it." The nurse stared at me as if I were an i***t. "They don't have that much money to cover the medical bills." "How much is it?" I questioned, pulling out my black dollar card. "It's eight thousand dollars," she replied. My blood immediately ran cold. I could pay it without breaking a sweat, but those two weeks I spent working in a retail shop taught me the value of money. And this amount wasn't small for the average person. ............ Eight thousand it was. I swiped my card and immediately paid nine thousand three hundred and fifty dollars. That cleared the backlog of debt they already owed. She had practically saved my life. I needed to give her some sort of compensation. Too bad she didn't have a phone. I couldn't even reach her. I walked out of the general hospital in disgust. I hated the strange smell of antiseptic lingering in the air. My father's multimillion-dollar private clinic wouldn't dare allow such a forbidden odor to contaminate my lungs. My phone rang and I pulled it out just as a panicked voice spoke through the speaker. "Hello, Young Master. Your mother has been worried sick about you. Where the hell have you been?" "None of your f*****g business," I snapped through the phone. Ever since my father arranged the marriage between me and Bridget, I'd hated going back home. I hated every family gathering. I hated looking at the cold stone walls glittering beneath diamond lights each time I walked into the Knight mansion. And tonight was no exception. I had been cornered into celebrating my successful championship campaign with Bridget and her father, the senator of Mavic North. I was given an ultimatum; either attend the party or have my accounts frozen again. That's why I happily transferred the nine thousand three hundred and fifty dollars. Perhaps I could even get a refund of a thousand if Skylar's father recovered. As I pondered the thought, an SUV tore through the street and stopped right in front of me. "Get in. Now!" The man dressed in black ordered, staring at me with so much fury in his eyes.
