Chapter 5: The Promise

1167 Words
Alexander's POV There is a saying in business that every delayed decision eventually becomes a costly mistake. For years, I believed I could control the timing of everything. Business deals. Investments. Company acquisitions. Public image. Even my personal life. I convinced myself that if I waited just a little longer, I could fix everything without hurting anyone. How wrong I was. Because the longer I waited... The more painful the truth became. The rain had just stopped when my driver pulled into the underground parking of Villanueva Global Holdings. Another day. Another meeting. Another decision that would shape the future of thousands of employees. Yet none of those decisions weighed as heavily on me as the one I had avoided for nearly eight years. Amelia deserved the truth. She deserved it years ago. Every morning I woke beside her. I promised myself, today. I'll tell her today. Every night I come home... I lost the courage. Not because I wanted to deceive her. But because I was terrified of losing the only person who had ever loved me without expecting anything in return. "Good morning, sir." Employees greeted me as I walked through the lobby. I returned each greeting with a polite nod. The lobby buzzed with activity. Executives hurried toward the elevators. Receptionists answered ringing phones. Young interns rushed between departments with stacks of files. This company had become a second home to thousands of people. Every decision I made affected countless families. That responsibility never left my shoulders. But there was one responsibility I had failed. The woman was waiting for me at home. "Alex." Daniel Cruz stepped out of the elevator carrying two cups of coffee. He handed one to me without asking. "You look like you didn't sleep." "I didn't." "Thinking again?" "When do I ever stop?" He laughed quietly. "Fair point." We entered my private office overlooking the city. Daniel closed the door behind us. The smile disappeared from his face. "Is today finally the day?" I looked out the window. The city stretched endlessly beneath the morning sun. "So many people depend on me." "And?" "I can't let one mistake destroy everything." Daniel frowned. "You're still calling it one mistake?" I turned toward him. "What would you call it?" He hesitated. "A life." His answer silenced the room. "You built a company." "You built relationships." "You built promises." "But lies have a way of growing with everything else." "I never lied about loving Amelia." "No." "You lied about everything surrounding that love." His words echoed in my mind long after he left. I sank into my chair and opened the top drawer of my desk. Hidden beneath confidential business contracts was a small velvet box. Inside rested a diamond ring. Simple. Elegant. Exactly the way Amelia liked. I had bought it two years earlier. It had never left my office. Every time I planned to propose... Something happened. A corporate crisis. A family emergency. Another excuse. Or perhaps... I was simply a coward. A soft knock interrupted my thoughts. "Come in." My executive assistant entered carrying a folder. "Sir, Attorney Benjamin Ortega is here." "Send him in." Moments later, the company's legal adviser walked inside. He greeted me with a firm handshake. "You wanted to discuss something confidential." I nodded. "I've made my decision." He opened his notebook. "I'm filing for divorce." Silence filled the office. Benjamin removed his glasses. "Are you absolutely certain?" "I've never been more certain." "You understand the consequences?" "I do." "Your marriage contract includes substantial financial penalties." "I know." "Several international investors may withdraw." "I know." "Media attention will be unavoidable." "I know." He studied my face carefully. "This isn't about business." "No." "It's about someone else." I smiled faintly. "It's about finally being honest." Benjamin leaned back in his chair. "Then why do you look terrified?" Because honesty had a price. And I wasn't sure if I could afford to lose Amelia. After the lawyer left, I remained seated in silence. The divorce papers would be prepared within the week. For the first time in years... I felt hope. Maybe it wasn't too late. Maybe Amelia would forgive me. Maybe we could finally live the life I had promised her. A normal life. No more secrets. No more hidden dinners. No more excuses about why she couldn't attend company events. No more pretending. I reached for my phone. Her contact photo appeared instantly. She was laughing in the picture, flour on her cheeks, after insisting we bake cookies together one Sunday afternoon. I smiled. Then pressed the call button. She answered in the second ring. "Hi." Her cheerful voice immediately brightened my day. "Am I disturbing you?" "Never." "What are you doing?" "Baking cinnamon rolls." "For me?" She laughed. "When are they not?" I closed my eyes, imagining her standing in our kitchen with flour dusting the tip of her nose. "Amelia..." "Yes?" "I need to tell you something." There was a brief pause. "You sound serious." "I am." "Did something happen at work?" "No." "Are you okay?" "I will be." She grew quiet. "What is it?" I took a deep breath. "This weekend..." "I want us to go somewhere." "Just the two of us." Her voice softened. "A date?" "More than that." "I've been keeping something from you." The silence on the other end lasted only a few seconds. But to me... It felt like an eternity. Finally, she answered. "Whatever it is..." "We'll face it together." Those six words nearly broke me. How could someone trust me so completely? How could someone believe in me so blindly? "I love you," I whispered. "I love you more." When the call ended, I stared at the phone for a long time. This weekend. No more delays. No more fear. I would tell her everything. I would ask for forgiveness. And if she still wanted me after knowing the truth... I would spend the rest of my life making up for every tear my silence had caused. Across the city, another pair of eyes watched my every move. Inside a luxury hotel suite, a private investigator placed several photographs onto a glass table. Alexander joined Villanueva Global Holdings. Alexander leaving a condominium. Alexander attends charity events. A woman's face appeared repeatedly beside him. The investigator looked at his client. "This woman has been with Mr. Villanueva for several years." The client's manicured fingers slowly slid one photograph closer. She stared at the smiling woman standing beside Alexander. For the first time... A crack appeared in her perfect composure. "So..." She whispered. "He does have a secret." Her lips curved into a cold smile. "Find out everything about her." Outside, thunder rumbled across the darkening sky. Neither Amelia nor Alexander knew that fate had already begun moving its pieces across the board. Alexander believed he still had time to tell the truth. But sometimes... Life doesn't wait for us to find the courage. Sometimes... The truth arrives on its own. And when it does... It changes everything.
