Chapter Nine Instead of answering Michael, which I'm not sure he would want me to do anyway, I spend the rest of the night goofing around with Sydney, watching her spin her baton and practice her routines in the backyard so she won't get in trouble with our mom. Later, when I'm in bed and thinking of how good it feels to be home, I cover my eyes and think about how I need to move forward when I see Michael. I won't just see him, I'll see Emily, too, and I need to get my act together and not behave like he's cheating on me with her. He looked older today, more serious. He' s always helped out at the diner, learning all the details of the business carefully so his parents could count on hi m to handle any situation, but I never considered that this might be what he want
