I winced and groaned simultaneously. Protection
I looked up and counted the number of people staring at me. They all gave me a depressing expression in their eyes and showed no sympathy for me. It appeared more like I had wrecked their party, which is why they did not like me.
"I apologise!" Particularly when Rosslyn waved a "You are dead" sign, I whimpered.
Looking at the pieces of glass lodged in my hand, I felt helpless and had to keep saying I am sorry, even though I was in pain at the moment.
Suddenly, I heard someone is speaking. Everyone paused their conversation to look in the direction of the voice.
My eyes widened when I realised who it was.
"I witnessed all that took place. Why do you apologise? Pete yelled, wrath burning in his ice-blue eyes.
Tyler and Zane were right on his tail.
As he faced the challenge, Pete's words resounded throughout the room. "I witnessed all that took place. Why do you apologise? His icy-blue eyes pierced through the tension in the room as they flared with rage.
With a mixture of interest and worry on their faces, Zane and Tyler looked at each other. Rosslyn, the one who started all of this, folded her arms with a smug smile on her face, as if she was enjoying the attention.
Ava, who was still getting over the slap, gave Pete a rebellious look. "Pete, mind your own business. It is just Rosslyn and myself for now."
Pete stepped forward, his jaw tightening. "When someone receives unfair treatment, I take notice of it. Saying you are sorry for something you did not do? That is manipulation rather than strength."
Rosslyn snorted, brushing aside Pete's remarks. Oh, please, Pete. You claim to be the hero at all times. I will not put up with this loser who wrecked my celebration."
Pete's eyes moved to the broken glass on the ground. "Rosslyn, it appears that you are the one stirring up problems. And resisting injustice is where true power lies."
Dispersed among the spectators, some were whispering to one another and others were seeing the altercation as it happened. There was a quiet strain in the air.
Zane moved forward and spoke to Rosslyn. "You should probably think again before acting. You cannot just harass someone for the sake of bullying them; this is not a game."
"Yeah, Rosslyn, it is not cool," Tyler continued. Let us settle this amicably."
Rosslyn rolled her eyes. "All three of you consider yourselves to be the moral police. Whatever. Please move out of my path."
Pete's eyes never left Rosslyn's. When injustice is taking place in front of them, nobody will avoid the situation. Express regret to Ava."
Rosslyn's eyes furrowed, but before she could reply, someone in the crowd raised a voice. "What is happening here?"
A tall figure moved into the room and caught everyone's attention. The student body held Professor Anderson in high regard as a fair and tough teacher.
Pete grabbed hold of the chance. "There has been an incident, professor. We will not tolerate Rosslyn's harsh attack on Ava in this place."
Observing the broken glasses and the tense atmosphere in the room, Professor Anderson evaluated the scene. "Rosslyn, could you elaborate?"
Rosslyn sneered, "It is not a major concern. I reacted because she wrecked my party. "Story ends here."
The professor's hard face gave way to one of disappointment. "Using violence as a response is never appropriate. You will pay a price for what you did, Rosslyn. Furthermore, Ava, you do not have to apologise if you have not done anything wrong."
Rosslyn's face flushed scarlet with rage as the audience muttered something. Pete gave Ava a comforting look as the professor spoke, giving her a tacit vote of support.
Feeling both relief and thanks for Pete's intervention, Ava continued to nurse the sting on her cheek. The professor's remarks appeared to bring some justice back to the tumultuous atmosphere. But Rosslyn was never one to give up lightly.
With a look of defiance, Rosslyn balled her fists. "This is really unjust! She need to pay for destroying everything."
Anderson, the professor, arched an eyebrow. "Rosslyn, violence is not how we resolve disputes. Please accept my apology to Ava and take this as a lesson."
Rosslyn gave Ava a glare, but she reluctantly mumbled a false sorry. The lecturer went on, "I expect better behaviour from all of you," which added to the lingering tension in the room. Rejected."
The crowd parted as Rosslyn bounded off, leaving Ava, Pete, Zane, and Tyler in the wake of the altercation. Pete smiled encouragingly as he walked up to Ava. "Are you alright?"
Ava nodded, appreciating his thoughtfulness. "I am grateful to you. Without your assistance, I am not sure what I would have done."
Zane said, "You did a good job managing it. In such circumstance, few people could have maintained their composure."
"We should stick together," Tyler continued. We must look out for one another because Rosslyn will not forget this."
Tension persisted as the group strolled across the college courtyard. Ava could not get rid of her suspicion that Rosslyn would continue to harbour animosity.
Later that day, Ava found a mysterious message in her locker that threatened to harm her if she did not withdraw from the impending student council election. The group realised they were caught up in a web of campus politics and that the stakes were larger than she had thought.
At a covert gathering in the shuttered school library, they planned their next course of action. With a determined expression in his eyes, Pete said, "We can not allow Rosslyn control us. Let us disclose her plans and take the other side."
Though hesitant, Ava consented after realising how important it was to stand up for what was right. The voice of reason, Zane, as usual, said, "But we need evidence. We can not afford to go without being ready since Rosslyn is sly."
As Tyler looked around the space, he saw a hidden camera in the corner. "Perhaps the library has previously caught Rosslyn in the act. Let us examine the video.
They found a number of damning recordings as they dug deeper into the security system of the library, which exposed Rosslyn's covert actions to weaken her competitors. Now, the group had to decide whether to reveal Rosslyn's duplicity or to follow the right path.
Tensions reached a crescendo during the following student council debate. Unaware of the revelation that was about to happen, Rosslyn boldly shared her plans for the school. On a big screen behind her, though, a compilation of damning video aired as the lights went down.
Shouts of surprise filled the auditorium as everyone saw how Rosslyn's plans worked. Accusations and whispers filled the room. Professor Anderson interrupted, saying, "Rosslyn, step down from the election immediately," obviously taken aback by the change of events.
Rosslyn, besieged and vanquished, scowled at Ava for having selected justice over retaliation. The group discovered that, in certain cases, seeking the truth might be the most effective defence against dishonesty as the fallout altered the dynamics within the student body.
The mood on campus changed as Rosslyn reluctantly withdrew from the contest. Rumours about the incident surfaced, raising doubts among students about the genuineness of their once-enchanting candidate in the corridors. Due to Rosslyn's fall from grace, there was a power vacuum that led to a fresh batch of pupils seeking leadership positions.
As the "Justice Squad," Ava and her companions grew to be both envied and admired. As the group gained notoriety, they had to strike a careful balance between it and the enduring hostility of those who remained faithful to Rosslyn.
"This is not over," Pete said to them one day as they gathered at their regular meeting place. Rosslyn is not going to take this loss lightly. We must continue to exercise caution."
Zane went on, "I agree. We must remain vigilant. After this disclosure, there may be unanticipated difficulties."
