CHAPTER 11

1368 Words
*Gray* It was the following day, and I decided to work from home today. I woke up early, completing some meaningless tasks for the company, before the rest of the day started. I had a lot planned for today. Alexa was moving into a guest room, as well as some interviews for security. I won't allow what happened yesterday to happen again. Fran came and got me once Daisy woke up, and I rushed into my bedroom. She was really out of it, slurring her speech, because of the morphine. The poor thing was incredibly swollen, which also caused a slight speech inpediment. I have never felt so much sympathy for someone before, and all I could think about was wrapping her in my arms and holding her close. The doctor arrived shortly after Daisy woke up, and cleaned her cheek again. As most wounds go, it will look worse before it looks better. I know the minute she sees the damage, though, she is going to panic. It's a deep cut, and will most likely leave a nasty scar, but I have a remedy for that. Daisy doesn't realize it yet, but I fully intend on taking care of her. I don't know when I made this decision, but for once in my life I'm certain it's what I want to do. Daisy would be in and out of conscienceness today, and the nurse was planning on keeping her company. This allowed me to conduct some interviews. I'm meeting with two men this morning, and my first task is to determine if they're affiliated with my family in any way. I know they will try to lie, if they have or are affiliated, and I'll find out. Being the only nice family member in my family has its perks; people are more inclined to be my friend. I have a tech savy friend, who used to work for my family before he was wrongfully fired. Needless to say, he's happy to help prevent their spies. His name is Shwinn, well that's what I call him, that's what everyone calls him. Shwinn knows how to dig deeper in background checks, and happens to know how to hack. If anyone that works for my family tries to apply today, I'll have to settle it with them before they expose me further. I don't want my family to catch on to what I'm doing, not yet anyway. The first gentleman arrived, his name was Haedyn. Tall, even taller than me and I'm a little over six foot, and extremely muscular. I guess those are going to be the qualities of all the men I talk to today. Haedyn was young, twentyeight, but that didn't mean he lacked experience. We shook hands and I lead him into the living room, where we sat across from each other on the couches. "I just have a couple questions," I said, while scanning his resume, "What's your reasoning for wanting to work with me?" "I've heard you're a good man, and I want to help protect people." Haedyn smiled, a smile that was empty. "Are you okay with twentyfour hour shifts, from time to time?" I asked, already having a predisposition for him. "Sure thing." He smirked, another cocky grin. "I see your stats for target practice are high," I withheld my want to bring him down a couple notches, "But how are you with physical confrontation?" "I can handle anything." He shrugged, and I stood on my feet, holding out my hand to shake his. "Thanks for your time." I said, steering him toward the entrance. "We'll talk soon." Haedyn confidentally responded, walking out of my house. I didn't even have to ask Shwinn to look Haedyn up, I already knew he was sent by my parents. I'm not sure how they found out, but now I have to be extremely careful. I quickly texted Shwinn about Haedyn, asking him for his home address. I'll have to pay him a visit later on to discuss the problem. I may be different from my family in most ways, but lets not forget we share the same blood, I am every bit as capable of their actions, and I don't play nice when I'm taken for a fool. Next on the list was a man named Alistair, he was thirtyfour years old, and has plenty of experience as a body guard. Just as I was looking over his resume, I heard Fran let someone in the house. I walked around to the entrance and saw Alistair. He was the same height as me, with brown and gray hair. He was wearing rugged jeans, with a flannel button up. "Hello, sir." He said, stretching his hand out to shake mine. "I'm Alistair Cohen." "Nice to meet you," I said shaking his hand, "I'm Gray." I smiled at Fran, and led Alistair into the living room. Alistair had a calm demeanor, as he sat on the couch across from me, and patiently waited for my questions. Already, I got a better feeling about him than Haedyn, and I was thankful for my intuition. Alistair's background is squeaky clean. Which means he's either really good at covering up his tracks, or is actually an innocent man. "How long have you been a body guard?" I asked. "About ten years," He responded, "I found I was good at fighting, and wanted to use it for the better." "And why do you want to work for me?" I asked, taking notes. "I just need a job, sir." Alistair grunted, lowering his eyes. "I see you're from Arizona, how long have you lived here?" I asked, wondering if he even knows who I am. "Only a few months, sir." Alistair truthfully responded, and I felt like he was a trustworthy man. "I see," I nodded, "Then you're not aware of who my family is..." "You never mentioned your last name, sir, but I know I've never met you before today." Alistair responded, remaining calm. "I'm Grayson Savage, my father is Charles Savage, owner of SAV shipping company." I stated, studying his body language closely. "I may have seen your advertisement around town?" He responded, almost as a question. "Fair enough," I chuckled, "I have one more question, and it's one that I need your full honesty." "Alright." Alistair nodded, looking me square in the eyes. "Have you ever killed a person while performing your job?" I asked. "Yes, sir..." Alistair winced, but didn't break eye contact, "I didn't have a choice." "I appreciate your honesty," I smiled, and placed a check mark beside his name, "Do you have any questions for me?" "Only one, sir." Alistair replied, quickly glancing around the room, "Who am I protecting, and from what?" "That's two questions," I smirked, "But, I'll show you." I motioned for him to follow me upstairs, where Daisy was resting peacefully. I opened my bedroom door, and walked inside, standing beside the bed. Alistair slowly approached me, and looked down at Daisy with a tender expression. I watched as his eyes studied the fresh wound on her cheek. "This is who you're protecting," I whispered, and walked out of the room, "You're protecting her from my family..." "Your family, sir?" Alistair asked, perplexed. "I'll give you pictures of each one, so you know what they look like. They are forbidden from entering my house, under any circumstances." I responded, leading him towards the attic. "Does that mean you're hiring me?" Alistair asked, failing to conceal his excited grin. "I think so," I chuckled, as we reached the attic. I pulled out an old large picture frame from the corner of the room, and turned it for him to see. It was a family portrait, when I was twenty years old. It was a good refrence, until I got him set up with some files for them. I was going to educate Alistair on my families trickeries, what they're notorious for, so he's well aware what he's dealing with. "You're family is quite attractive..." Alistair chuckled, "But they look deeply omunious." "They are." I agreed, studying the faces that I call my family, when in actuality their faces make my stomach churn.
