"Cousin, how could you think that? I just wanted to give you a chance to spend money on your cousin."
"You must be joking! I remember all the tricks you played on me when we were kids," Dong Yu Cheng said, giving her a skeptical look.
Hearing this, Ye Chen Xi became displeased. "If it weren't for you always teasing me when we were kids, would I ever trick you? I believe in tit for tat."
Dong Yu Cheng snorted dismissively and ignored her.
Later, Dong Yu Cheng took Ye Chen Xi to the largest mall in Lan City. After wandering around, they entered a women's clothing store.
"Are you buying clothes for Aunt?" Ye Chen Xi asked curiously. "This store doesn't seem like her style."
"I picked these out for you. Try them on," Dong Yu Cheng said, handing her the clothes he had chosen.
"No need, I have plenty of clothes," Ye Chen Xi replied, handing the clothes back to him.
Dong Yu Cheng glared at her. "Stop pretending. I know about your life in the capital. Grandpa and Dad might not know, but I do."
Ye Chen Xi was surprised and touched. She knew that deep down, her cousin cared about her, but he was just too proud to show it.
Ignoring her protests, Dong Yu Cheng handed the clothes to the sales assistant. "Help her try these on."
Tapping her head lightly, Dong Yu Cheng said, "Stop overthinking. Go try them on. Cousin's treating you."
This time, Ye Chen Xi didn't refuse and followed the sales assistant to the fitting room. Dong Yu Cheng sat on a sofa, flipping through a magazine while waiting.
When Xia Ning Chu entered the store, she immediately spotted Dong Yu Cheng sitting on the sofa. Her heart skipped a beat. She hadn't seen him since he rejected her.
She hesitated, unsure whether to greet him and afraid of seeing his cold demeanor.
Seeing Xia Ning Chu's hesitation, her friend, He Zhi Ying, nudged her. "Are you okay, Ning Chu?"
Hearing her name, Dong Yu Cheng stiffened, turned his head, and locked eyes with Xia Ning Chu. His heart skipped a beat.
At that moment, Ye Chen Xi returned, pulling Dong Yu Cheng's attention away. "Cousin, what do you think? Does this look good?"
Dong Yu Cheng snapped back to reality and smiled at Ye Chen Xi. "It looks great."
Seeing this, Xia Ning Chu felt a pang of jealousy. "Who is this woman? Why are they so intimate?"
Unable to hold back, Xia Ning Chu walked up to Dong Yu Cheng and pointed at Ye Chen Xi. "Is it because of her you rejected me?"
Confused, Ye Chen Xi wondered what was happening. She had only tried on a dress.
Coldly, Dong Yu Cheng replied, "I rejected you, not because of anyone else."
Tears welled up in Xia Ning Chu's eyes, and she choked out, "Dong Yu Cheng, you knew I've liked you for five years. I've silently accompanied you, cared for you, and supported you. I finally mustered the courage to confess, and you won't even give me a reason. I refuse to believe you feel nothing for me. If I'm not good enough, I can try harder."
"Dong Yu Cheng's words were a cruel blow to Xia Ning Chu. "I don't like you. You've always been delusional. That's the reason."
With that, Dong Yu Cheng's words shattered Xia Ning Chu's heart, and tears blurred her vision.
