Chapter 8: The Bennett Witch

1208 Words
Vanessa walked out of the house onto the street lost in her thoughts. Why was everyone thinking there was something else to their relationship? The Alpha didn't have a heart. He was a ruthless Alpha who did as he wanted. Though he had saved her, that still didn't mean he was a good man. She shook the thoughts of Levi and the Alpha out of her head. She was determined to enjoy the day as much as possible before they could realise that she wasn't anywhere around. Vanessa stopped in her tracks. Someone was performing a spell. It enthralled her, she stood to watch her as she used magic. She wished she could learn from her. "Good morning," Vanessa greeted the witch. She had walked up to her when she couldn't watch from afar. She wanted to see how it was done and if she could learn it also. She didn't have to go to the tavern today. She could go some other time with Ulah. It would be fun watching them dance and sing while they listened to the gossip. The act before her captured her interest for now. The witch turned around. She was tired and needed rest but she couldn't rest until she perfected the spell exercise well. That was the only way she would pass her test. Her eyes roved all over Vanessa's body from her feet to her head. She wondered who this was. Why was she looking at her that way? The witch squinted her eyes at Vanessa in confusion. Was the lady laughing at her? "Who are you?" The witch asked. She knew almost everyone in Archwood. It was a small village and the people were close-knit. She had never seen this face before. She was sure about it. "I'm Vanessa," Vanessa smiled at her. The witch frowned. She was in no mood to exchange pleasantries with a stranger. Moreso, she had to be careful, some witches who wanted to see her fail could have conjured an image to deceive her. If something happened to her potions, she would miss the test no matter what happened. She stretched her wand out to a surprised Vanessa. She hadn't expected it. "Who are you?" The witch glared at her. "I am Vanessa. I stay at the castle with Alpha Ryan." Vanessa added quickly. She had seen the way they respected the Alpha. The sound of his name was enough to make them cower. No one would dare hurt her after hearing the Alpha's name clearly, except the person didn't hear clearly. And as she thought, the witch drew back her wand but not without giving her one last suspicious look. "Really? You are the new intake in the pack?" The witch quizzed her. Vanessa nodded. News flew fast in Archwood. How had the witch known that she was a new intake? They must have spoken about it. However, she didn't concern herself with that. "I am Zoey," the witch introduced her. "Come sit here." She gestured for Vanessa to take a seat on a chair. Vanessa was surprised at the quick change in attitude. Alpha Ryan's name worked wonders already. She wouldn't hesitate to use it next time if she faced any danger. She smiled at the witch and took the seat. She watched as the witch mixed some potions and read from a magic book. "What are you doing?" Vanessa couldn't stop her curiosity. "I am practicing for tomorrow." The witch answered. "Tomorrow?" Vanessa's brows furrowed. "I have to take a test which will guarantee my approval into the witch society tomorrow. I am practicing these spells so I do not make any mistake," the witch paused to answer her. "That's great. If you do need any help, I am here." Vanessa said. "Can you hold this for me? I need to pick up something inside." Zoey passed her wand to Vanessa. She had forgotten to take another book. She sighed as she climbed the steps into the stall. If she passed this test, it would mean a lot to her. She had come from a lineage of witches. However, no matter how much she tried, she was never perfect as some spells. Her master had said she needed to learn them well or she would have to retake the test until she passed. Zoey entered the stall to search for the magic book. It was almost noon and she had a few hours left to practice. She was sore and tired because she was up all night practicing a hard spell, but she wouldn't dare close her eyes until she had finished. The afternoon sun hung up in the sky. Vanessa was thrilled to hold the wand. She stroked it in her hands gently. Zoey didn't see the book yet. She had searched her shelf and it wasn't there. She would have to search further. It would take her time. "Vanessa, I'm coming. I haven't seen the book yet." Zoey raised her voice to inform Vanessa who was waiting for her. Unable to hide her curiosity and since Zoey hadn't shown, Vanessa picked up the book. She read some lines which didn't make sense to her because she didn't know their meaning. Vanessa turned to another page. She held onto the magic wand tightly as she spoke a few words in the magic book. She repeated the words thrice. Something shifted within her as she spoke. Vanessa opened her mouth to speak however instead of words, she bleated. She held her chest in alarm. What has gone wrong? She tried speaking again, it came out like a goat's bleating. Vanessa gasped in shock. She tried saying the words to reverse the spell. It didn't work. Vanessa threw the wand from her hands in fright. She sucked in breaths in fear as she flipped the pages fast. Tears sprang to her eyes. Vanessa wondered what page would make her whole. What had she done? Why did she touch what she wasn't asked to touch? It had landed her in a horrible mess now. What would she do? " Alas, it's been here. After turning the stall upside down, I finally got it " Zoey sighed as she reached for the book on the top shelf. She had searched everywhere in the stall before her eyes caught the edge of the book. Why was she never coordinated? This was another thing the witch had complained of. She didn't remember where she put her things most of the time after using them. That was the case with the book in her hand. She hissed and stood up on her feet to walk out of the stall. "Look, I found the book," Zoey said as she emerged from the stall. "It was lying on…" she trailed off when she saw the alarmed look on Vanessa's face. Zoey took in her surroundings. The wand was on the floor and Vanessa was acting differently. What was going on? Had she lost her voice? There was something wrong. "What happened Vanessa? Speak up!" Zoey dropped the book and shook Vanessa. Vanessa turned to the witch in fright. "M-mmeh mm-mmmeh," she bleated. Zoey gasped in shock. Vanessa had tried one of the hardest magics. What would she do now?
