The Fight in the Market

346 Words
The market is alive with activity—traders calling out their wares, buyers haggling over prices, and the scent of roasted corn mixing with the aroma of fresh vegetables. But amidst the usual chaos, tension brews between two figures—Iniobong and Aniefiok. Aniefiok (angrily): Iniobong, so you think you've won, don’t you? Just because Ekong has chosen you over me? You walk around like you’re better than everyone else! Iniobong (calmly): Aniefiok, this isn’t about winning or losing. Ekong made his choice, and I had no hand in it. Love isn’t something you force on someone. Aniefiok (scoffing): Don’t act innocent! I know you whispered lies about me to him. You poisoned his mind so he wouldn't return my love. Iniobong (firmly): I did no such thing. If Ekong does not want you back, it is because his heart is elsewhere. Accept it and move on. Aniefiok (mocking): Move on? You think I’ll let you enjoy what should have been mine? I loved Ekong before you even looked his way! Iniobong (warningly): And yet, he chose me. If you truly loved him, you would want his happiness—not to force yourself on him. Aniefiok, unable to hold back her jealousy, suddenly lunges at Iniobong, shoving her backward into a stall of yams. The yams tumble to the ground, causing nearby traders to gasp in shock. Trader (shouting): Ah! What is happening here? Iniobong, recovering quickly, steps forward. Iniobong (angrily): You dare lay hands on me? Aniefiok swings at Iniobong, but she dodges and pushes her back. The fight escalates—slaps, shoves, and hair-pulling as the crowd gathers around, shouting and urging them to stop. Old Woman (pleading): Iniobong, Aniefiok, stop this madness! Is Ekong worth this disgrace? A group of market women finally steps in, pulling them apart. Aniefiok, breathing heavily, glares at Iniobong with pure hatred. Aniefiok (spitefully): This isn’t over. Iniobong (coolly): It was over the moment Ekong chose me. As the crowd begins to disperse, Iniobong walks away, her dignity intact, while Aniefiok stands there, fists clenched, humiliated and defeated.
